CAIRO -- Toppled Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was declared “clinically dead” after suffering a stroke and slipping out of consciousness at a prison hospital in Cairo, according to the official state news agency, which quoted unnamed medical sources.

The report says Mubarak, who is serving a life sentence for complicity to commit murder in the deaths of hundreds of protesters in the uprising that overthrew him last year, was declared clinically dead after his transfer from the prison hospital to a military hospital a few miles away.

The report could not be independently verified. Al Jazeera quoted Mubarak’s lawyer as denying the report.

Mubarak, 84, has suffered from a number of ailments, including depression, heart attacks and hypertension, since he was arrested in 2011. His sons, Gamal and Alaa, who are also in prison on charges of financial corruption, were recently moved to their father’s hospital wing on the advice of a doctor.

Mubarak’s last public appearance was at his sentencing hearing this month. He laid half upright on a stretcher and peered through the wire mesh of the defendants cage as the judge read his fate.
