Mexican mayor slain while campaigning for Calderon's sister

Mexican Mayor Ricardo Guzman Romero with President Felipe Calderon and Michoacan Gov. Leonel GodoyREPORTING FROM MEXICO CITY -- A Mexican mayor has been shot to death as he campaigned for President Felipe Calderon's sister in state elections (link in Spanish).

Eleven days before residents in the western state of Michoacan elect a governor and other local officials, La Piedad Mayor Ricardo Guzman Romero was gunned down Wednesday as he handed out leaflets (link in Spanish).

Guzman was campaigning on behalf of Luisa Maria Calderon, a candidate for governor for her brother's National Action Party. It was not clear if Guzman's killers were one of the notorious drug gangs that dominate Michoacan, or hired guns from a political rival.

Mayors have long been a target in the violence gripping Mexico. Nearly 20 have been killed in the last two years, sometimes by drug gangs, local police or other enemies.
