REPORTING FROM SEOUL –- Samsung Electronics Co. has decided to pay its respects to a rival by delaying the release of a new smartphone after the death of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.

Samsung, the world’s second-largest maker of mobile phones, is holding off unveiling its new Nexus Prime handset, which was scheduled for release at its Mobile Unpack event in San Diego on Tuesday.

“Given the circumstances, we deemed it inappropriate to hold an event for a new product launch,” the company said in a statement this week published in South Korea’s JoonAng Daily newspaper.

There was no new date given for the release of the handset, which Samsung has dubbed the “iPhone 4S killer,” a reference to Apple’s latest version of its popular device, which was released this month.

Jobs died last week following a long illness, reportedly from the effects of pancreatic cancer.

Samsung’s decision to hold off on the introduction of its new device came amid growing tensions between the two companies.

Samsung and Apple are set to lock horns in legal battles in the U.S., Australia, South Korea, Europe and Japan. The two technology giants are suing each other in 20 cases involving a host of alleged patent violations.
