REPORTING FROM JERUSALEM -- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is being lampooned on Facebook and the Internet for what critics say was his attempt to politically exploit the release of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit by crashing the emotional homecoming between Shalit and his father.

Netanyahu’s self-insertion into the dramatic photo of Shalit hugging his father -- as the smiling prime minster looks on -- has inspired a slew of Photoshopped spoofs, inserting Netanyahu into all
kinds of other historic scenes.

He makes Forest Gump-like appearances (or Zelig-like, for the older set) into pictures of the 1948 signing of Israel’s declaration of independence, the 1967 capture of the Old City and the 1979 Camp David peace-accord signing at the White House.

Not stopping there, Internet users also show him crossing Abbey Road with the Beatles, in bed with Yoko and John on the Rolling Stone cover and meeting Harry Potter.
