MTV to fans: Is Rick Astley the 'Best Act Ever'?

05:55 PM PT, Oct 1 2008

RickrollemaMTV Europe has a surprise contender in this year's 2008 European Music Awards. Having opened up the category of "Best Act Ever" to write-in nominations, MTVE is the latest to fall victim to the now-aged "RickRoll" meme as fans selected Rick Astley to battle with Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Green Day, U2 and Tokio Hotel for this highest of award show high honors.

Not only that, by allowing fans to vote on the winner, MTVE has left the door open to the same kind of trickery that restored Astley to the spotlight this year after 20 years of radio silence.

There could be nothing more "lulzy" than a netwide campaign to steal the all-time musical crown for Astley, a guy who unhesitatingly called the song that twice made him famous "naff."

At the same time, getting the reclusive Astley on international television to sing "Never Gonna Give You Up" one more time could be a major publicity coup for MTV. Viewers are used to MTV standbys like U2 and Britney, but a chance for Astley to RickRoll the world on live television would be a special treat indeed.

I can't believe that people don't realize that the people on /b/ in 4-chan (which you seem to have alluded to with 'Lulzy') are scamming this election with vote auto-clickers and triggers. It's funny. I'd like to see 4chan completely own MTV. But I'm shocked people don't realize that it's a gag, and there aren't really that many people voting for him. Just a couple hundred--hundreds of thousands of times with an autoclicking macro.

bri

personally i think tokio hotel should win

Van

Tokio Hotel as Best Act Ever? They need to be more well known and make better music for that to happen.

Gorkem

Britney is the best act ever.. She dominated pop culture with her videos, performances, albums, tours and controversial life.. If EMA is a credible show Britney will win this award

Damien

Rick Astley should win - out of the choices provided. Sure, the rest of these guys have major accomplishments - but not the best ever. This man's ONE SONG that people seem to remember has had so much power over the media and the internet compared to albums worth of music from these other people. What about some other contenders? While they may not be our favorites, what about the bands or musicians that dominated an era or a genre? What about the people everyone knows like Elvis, or big names like Led Zeppelin, or other options?
