Party time again: Michelle Obama explains the Angela Merkel state dinner for you guys without invites

Angela Merkel State Dinner 6-7-11

Another big night in the Barack Obama White House today, planned as another Salahi-free state dinner. This one is for Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel, whom Obama hasn't seen since their big meeting in France two weeks ago.

This is the fourth of these big to-do's, the most recent one being for China's President Hu. It'll be in the Rose Garden at the first lady's suggestion. In Washington culture, invites to these things are much coveted in a bipartisan way -- and used as rewards or persuasive invitations to become more helpful, politically speaking, to the big guy in the round office. Who knows, there are certainly donors in here too.

Two-hundred-and-twenty elites will partake in the grand soiree. Scroll down for Michelle Obama's own take on what the evening holds. And scroll even further to see all the guests who did make the cut (Lots of Honourable This and That, but also columnist E.J. Dionne, Diane Sawyer, Susan Eisenhower, James Hoffa and Chief Justice John Roberts).

While the political royalty dines outside the White House this evening, a gaggle of Republicans will be arguing up in New Hampshire, as the Democratic debate competition opens to become the host of future state dinners after Jan. 20, 2013.

The eat-less admonitions of the first lady go out the bulletproof windows at....

Obama team unveils exciting federal logo to make you eat less of what you like and more of what you don't

the new federal MyPlate Eat Healthy Logo

Just in time for county fair and picnic season, President Obama's administration has unveiled a brand-new, colorful, exciting logo designed to fill what it feels is a disturbing national shortage of reminders for Americans to eat healthier.

The MyPlate logo (see super-sized version above) will be widely distributed by your federal government to replace the familiar food pyramid design as the examining room poster least-read-by-impatient-patients-sitting-in-their-underwear-awaiting-a-tardy-doctor.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, who comes from Iowa and has downed his fair share of corn dogs, cheesesteaks and elephant ears over the years, unveiled the new logo.

"With so many food options available to consumers," Vilsack opined, "it is often difficult to determine the best foods to put on our plates when building a healthy meal."Surgeon General Regina Benjamin

Who could possibly oppose healthy meals, right? Especially if someone else has to eat them.

And especially given what medicine is going to cost individual Americans under the president's massive healthcare plan that everyone will be required to buy unless they can wangle a waiver from the Health and Human Services Department because they're a well-connected union, large corporation or run AARP?

And who is closer to the American people, cares more about their perceived needs, thinks they know more about everything that they think matters and is better able to impose such well-meaning propaganda reminders than federal government bureaucrats in Washington, D.C.?

"MyPlate is an uncomplicated symbol to help remind people to think about their food choices in order to lead healthier lifestyles," Vilsack added.

For increased news interest, the Ag department had on hand Michelle Obama, who's made the fight against obesity her first lady cause.

"I can already tell how much this is going to help parents across the country," said Mrs. Obama, who served six kinds of pies at her last Thanksgiving dinner.

"When mom or dad comes home from a long day of work," she stated, "we're already asked to be a chef, a referee, a cleaning crew. So it's tough to be a nutritionist too. But we do have time to take a look at our kids' plates. As long as they're half full of fruits and vegetables, and paired with lean proteins, whole grains and low-fat dairy, we're golden. That's how easy it is."

Also on hand Thursday to help serve up the warning about healthier face-stuffing was Regina Benjamin, President Obama's selection as the nation's health-driven surgeon general (see photo above).

She said:

"This new tool can be a fun way to help individuals and families make healthier meal choices. I encourage all Americans to follow the new dietary guidelines and become familiar with the new icon because it will serve as a compass to a healthy and fit nation."

The softer side of the Obamas' visit to Britain; Michelle chats with teen girls

Michelle Obama at Oxford with young girls 5-25-11

Someday it'll be a man, but for now the presidential spouse sent off for gentler human relations appearances during the chief executive's official talks is a woman, Michelle Obama.

She went to Oxford University ON Wednesday to meet with schoolgirls also visiting from Elzabeth Garrett Anderson School. The first lady's prepared remarks were the usual thrill at being there, appreciation to several people who'd made it possible and her favorite plea for increased volunteerism, even while growing up.

But then came questions from the young women, none impertinent, of course, and mostly adulatory about her husband, the political pioneer. Obama's full remarks and responses are posted over here.

We were particularly struck by two of the first lady's down-to-earth, spontaneous....

Rahm Emanuel takes over as Da Mare of Chicago

Mayor rahm Emanuel's inauguration guests david Axelrod timothy Geithner and jesse Jackson 5-16-11

Since the economy has pretty much roared back to life, the federal deficit is under control and we haven't yet borrowed every single yuan in China, Secretary of the Treasury Tim Geithner devoted Monday to watching Rahm Emanuel be sworn in as Chicago's new mayor.

Yes, yes, there's a $500 million municipal budget shortfall. But today was an exciting time in the inbred world of Chicago Democratic politics as one Democratic don, Richard M. Daley, who ruled for 22 years after eventually inheriting the job held for a generation by his father, Mayor Richard J. Daley, turned over the urban patronage post to the former chief of staff of another Chicagoan, ex-state Sen. Barack Obama, who hired Daley's former chief of staff, Valerie Jarrett, who had hired Obama's wife, Michelle, to work in City Hall.

Even Vice President Joe Biden, who's from Scranton via Delaware, was allowed in for the day to wave to the exuberant crowd witnessing the lakefront ascension and opening gavel swing of Chicago's first Jewish mayor and 46th overall.the scene of Mayor rahm Emanuel's inauguration as chicago mayor 5-16-11

In fact, it was such a big political day in the Windy City that as part of the new regime's innovative ways, Emanuel's organization was getting $50G's for the best seats at the inauguration.

This is a job Emanuel has coveted since he was a machine go-fer back in the 1980s.

That's before he became Bill Clinton's national campaign finance chairman and then a senior White House aide and then a millionaire, thanks to a few months at a local investment firm and then a member of the House of Representatives, inheriting Rod Blagoevich's North Side seat that we can't talk about anymore because Rod's on trial again, and then White House chief of staff for Obama to help create the Republican House landslide last fall.

If the recent historical pattern holds -- and barring any more federal indictments, of course -- Chicago should have another new mayor about this time in 2033. You read it here first.

Obama hails White House poetry night with prose

President Obama's remarks on poetry night, as provided by the White House

THE PRESIDENT:  Hello, everybody.  Please have a seat.  Welcome to the White House.  I am going to be brief, because on a night like tonight, my job is to get out of the way and let the professionals do their job.

I do want to start by thanking our extraordinary performers for taking time out of their busy schedules to be with us.  I also want to recognize the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities for putting on this event and for everything they do to support the arts. (Applause.)  Michelle Obama greets poetry night at White House 5-11-11

The power of poetry is that everybody experiences it differently. There are no rules for what makes a great poem.

Understanding it isn’t just about metaphor or meter. Instead, a great poem is one that resonates with us, that challenges us and that teaches us something about ourselves and the world that we live in.

As Rita Dove says, “If [poetry] doesn’t affect you on some level that cannot be explained in words, then the poem hasn’t done its job.” Also known as, it don’t mean a thing if -- (laughter) -- it ain’t got that swing. That’s a little ad-lib there. (Laughter.)

For thousands of years, people have been drawn to poetry in a very personal way -– including me. In the spirit of full disclosure, I actually submitted a couple of poems to my college literary magazine, and you will be pleased to know that I will not be reading them tonight. (Laughter.)

But as a nation built on freedom of expression, poets have always played an important role in telling our American story.

It was after the bombing of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812 that a young lawyer named Francis Scott Key penned the poem that would become our National Anthem.

The Statue of Liberty has always welcomed the “huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” Soldiers going off to fight in World War II were giving -- given books of poetry for comfort and inspiration. And whenever our nation has faced a great tragedy -– whether it was the loss of a civil rights leader, the crew of a space shuttle, or the thousands of Americans that were lost on a clear September day -– we have turned to poetry when we can’t find quite the right words to express what we’re feeling.

So tonight we continue that tradition by hearing from some of our greatest -– as well as some of our newest -– poets. Billy Collins, who is here with us, calls poetry “the oldest form of travel writing,” because it takes us to places we can only imagine.  So in that spirit, I’d like everyone to sit back, or sit on the edge of your seats, and enjoy the journey.

Thank you very much.  (Applause.)    ####

What Michelle Obama is telling graduates this year

Michelle Obama at University of Northern Iowa graduation 5-7-11

Michelle Obama's University of Northern Iowa prepared graduation remarks, as provided by the White House

Thank you so much.  I am thrilled and honored to be here today to help celebrate the UNI class of 2011 – congratulations to all of you on making it to this day. Before I get started, I wanted to let you know that if my remarks run long, I promise to take a break and we’ll crank up the music for the Interlude Dance. I’ve been practicing to get that ninja robot part just right.

In all seriousness, I want to thank President Ben Allen for that very kind introduction as well as Executive Vice President and Provost Gloria Gibson, Board of Regents President David Miles, all of the members of the Board of Regents and Katie Berge for her wonderful speech. I also want to thank Congressman Bruce Braley, former Governor Chet Culver, Cedar Falls Mayor Jon Crews and Waterloo Mayor Buck Clark for being here today. And I want to say a special thank you to everyone here in the UNI-Dome especially all of you who changed your plans so that we could celebrate our graduates together today.

Now, as many of you know, this is not my first time here in Iowa. In fact, it feels like....

Obama warns White House party crowd: 'You do not want to be between Michelle and a tamale'

some of the food for the Obama White House Cinco de Mayo party 5-5-11

El president Obama meant it as a joke for his latest White House party tonight, one to mark Cinco de Mayo.

The crowd laughed.

But Mr. Obama may pay for this public quip later tonight up in their private quarters. Since Primera Esposa Michelle Obama has been talking healthy eating and combating obesity for muchos meses, Even as her husband continues to be photographed downing junk food at most any opportunity..

No 'Cinco de Cuatro' gaffe this year. Obama learned his lesson two years ago; you can read this year's version in full by scrolling down. Americans politicians and many of their constituents mark May 5 as a celebration of Mexican-Americans and their heritage, especially the year before an election. In parts of Mexico the fest actually has more to do with a thumping they gave French soldiers 149 years ago (and not in soccer).

The president was clearly in a jolly mood despite a somber day of 9/11 wreath-laying at New York's ground zero. He promised the crowd a short speech and sort of delivered (11 minutes), unless you were hungry.

He thanked the usual long list of attendees, who can never get enough POTUS shoutouts. And he also thanked "my band," although the musicians on hand actually belong to the United States Marine Corps.

President Obama's Cinco de Mayo remarks, as provided by the White House

THE PRESIDENT:  Gracias, gracias. (Applause.)

AUDIENCE:  USA!  USA!  USA!

THE PRESIDENT:  Thank you. Gracias. Buenas noches. (Applause.) Bienvenidos. Welcome to the Cinco de Mayo at the White House.  (Applause.)

Nothing ruins a good fiesta like a long speech from a politician. (Laughter.) So I'm going to keep it short.

MRS. OBAMA: Keep it short.(Laughter.)

THE PRESIDENT:  Keep it short. I just want to acknowledge a few proud Latinos and friends of Latinos who are here with us tonight:  A great friend to me and to the United States, Ambassador Arturo Sarukhan is here, from Mexico, with his lovely wife Verónica.  (Applause.)  Interior....

Wedding Royal Kiss 4-29-11Prince William Kate Middleton

Even though those British bozos did not invite his boss, Barack Obama, to the wedding, nor his boss' boss, Michelle Obamajay Carney ponders a question, file, Press Secretary Jay Carney was designated to say something nice in public (full text below) about the romantic Cinderella event that captivated millions on global TV today.

Meanwhile, the president of this former British colony, whose father came from a former British colony, was left to take his daughters and mother-in-law down South.

There, the president looked at Alabama tornado damage, and then everyone went to see inside a large building at the Kennedy Space Center because the Endeavour shuttle launch was postponed, at least until Monday.

Which really ruined that photo op.

Obama's birth certificate came via a 'special dispensation' from Hawaii, he tells Oprah

Oprah with Barack and Michelle Obama

President Obama flew to Chicago on Wednesday to tape an interview with Oprah Winfrey to explain the details of his now-unearthed long-form birth certificate.

Sitting next to his wife, Michelle, Obama told Winfrey that he asked a favor, in a way, from the Aloha State.

"I said to my team, look, even though this is not usually what the state of Hawaii does. Even though the Republican governor of Hawaii, the Democratic governors of Hawaii, all the various officials had confirmed that I was born here, let's ask them for a special dispensation where they will go ahead and provide us with the original to see if we can put this to rest," Obama told the talk-show host.

Winfrey is a longtime supporter of Obama. The media mogul endorsed the then-senator while she was a guest on Larry King's television show in 2007. She attended the 2008 Democratic convention in Denver, appeared in key primary states throughout the campaign, hosted a fundraiser at her Montecito mansion, celebrated in Chicago's Grant Park on....

The increasingly odd political optics of Barack Obama

Easter Egg Roll Obama shows off his Basketball talents 4-25-11In politics, what you're really doing is often much less important than what it looks like you're really doing.

And with only 560 days left until the voters' next verdict, President Obama is rapidly painting himself into a public-relations corner with an ongoing series of possibly accidental gaffes that are accumulating in the public mind.

And the biting humor repertoire of late-night comics: "Donald Trump says he's President Obama's worst nightmare," Jay Leno said last night. "No. Having to make a decision is President Obama's worst nightmare."

The former state senator may, in fact, be slaving away on 18-hour policy days. But much of that is closed out of sight. So the public is left to focus on Obama's frequent vacations, golf outings, celebrity gatherings and proclivity to give a speech at the first whiff of trouble.

With no real opposition, Chicago's Democrat pols care little about how insensitive things look.

Any one of these apparent missteps is inconsequential. However, accumulated over his 118 weeks in office, they create the impression of carelessness at best or, worse, arrogance.

What the White House issues are photos of a tieless, laughing Obama, feet up on the historic Oval Office desk, chatting on the phone system that he complains is so decrepit.

What the public sees, while it frets over stubborn unemployment and soaring gas prices, is a diffident Democrat who takes a 17-vehicle motorcade of SUVs and limos to be seen looking at clean-energy cars.

A pontificating president who suggests that one worried commuter buy a new car instead of complaining.

A guy who spent 745 million donated dollars to get into the White House complaining to visiting editors about losing his anonymity and being locked in the presidential bubble that provideEaster Egg Roll Obama and one youngster 4-25-11s service, luxury, power and security unimaginable to most.

To be sure, other presidents have played golf. Maybe not during three simultaneous wars with the awful accompanying human tolls.

Not likely working the putter the day after a colossal combined earthquake/tsunami natural disaster hit as close an ally as Japan. Or canceling a trip to the funeral of Poland's president and hitting the links.

It's one thing to urge Americans to vacation on the troubled Gulf coast last summer, while your wife flies off to Spain with a planeload of pals.

It's another to spend much of Earth Day in a 747 jumbo jet flying 2,300 miles cross-country back from a slew of multimillion-dollar West Coast fundraisers, as Obama did last week.

It's one thing to launch a war against Libya while packing up your wife, daughters, mother-in-law and her friend to tour South America.

It's another to wait nine whole days to bother explaining the unexpected combat to a puzzled nation. Or nearly two months to arrange an Oval Office address on the country's worst environmental disaster ever.Obama relaxes in his Oval Office

It's one thing to laugh off the uninformed belief of millions of countrymen that Obama is a Muslim.

It's another to issue meticulous presidential messages and proclamations on what strike many Americans as the most obscure holidays of various religions around the world, then skip official notice of Easter in the predominantly Christian country they elected you to lead.

It's one thing to attend church with your family on that Easter holiday and nod in agreement during the sermon. It's another to leave that service a half-hour early, purportedly to avoid disrupting the service by waiting until the end.

Every president stages grand White House events like state dinners and the traditional Easter Egg Roll. Some 30,000 enjoyed themselves on the South Lawn Monday, even if few ever know precisely why they're rolling chicken eggs through the grass with spoons.

When George W. Bush staged his annual Tee-Ball tournament on that same grass, his staff ensured ample opportunity for the first father to be photographed, not demonstrating his own prowess at the plate, but teeing up the plastic ball for a little person to take a wild but earnest swing that drew applause all around.

On Monday President Obama held his monthly secret strategy meeting on the Afghanistan/Pakistan fighting. But what did we get about hObama awaits his entrance cue for a White House eventis day?

A photo of Obama appearing to laugh at one egg-rolling youngster. Photos of what could be a showoff Obama dribbling a basketball by himself while the crowd watches. And a shot of him shooting by himself.

Today, Obama will do four TV interviews on debt reduction to targeted markets in Ohio, Georgia, Virginia and Michigan. He'll then have meetings with Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates. All are closed.

But here's a selection of other Obama activities scheduled this week: Wednesday he and wife Michelle fly to Chicago on Air Force One. They will be there for three hours. The sole purpose: to tape an Oprah show. Obama will then fly to New York City. The sole purpose: a fundraiser, three, in fact.

Air Force One costs the government $181,000 an hour to operate.

Confident politicians enduring the ubiquitous criticism of American politics often remind themselves that much of what they do goes unseen and therefore unappreciated by the often inattentive people who employ them.

But in the end at the next election these elected officials assume that, even without deigning to carefully choreograph events, their work will speak for itself to voters passing judgment.

That may be true.
