Opinion: Stuff white people like: Republicans; GOP gaining with young and poor whites

The satirical website and book ‘Stuff White People Like’ listed Barack Obama as one of the 134 things Caucasians enjoy for one simple reason: ‘Because white people are afraid that if they don’t like him that they will be called racist,’ lifelong white person Christian Lander wrote.

If the once-popular site returned to publishing its list that includes such items as hummus, pea coats, not having a TV, and grammar, it might add Republicans, according to a new study

The latest Pew study released Friday found that GOP popularity with whites has been gaining steadily over the last few years, even among young people and the poor.

‘A seven-point Democratic advantage among whites under age 30 three years ago has turned into an 11-point GOP advantage today. And a 15-point Democratic advantage among whites earning less than $30,000 annually has swung to a slim four-point Republican edge today,’ the independent, non-partisan public opinion research organization wrote on its website.

One of the biggest gains for conservatives appears to be in the heartland of the U.S. In 2008, Midwestern whites favored Democrats by 3%; today they prefer Republicans by 14%. An interesting trend that has happened during the first term of the first half-black president who hails from the Midwest.
