Sarah Palin claims Paul Revere warned the British

Sarah Palin, if you haven't heard, is taking some of her family around the country, visiting historical U.S. landmarks, and talking to the media along the way.

Thursday her "One Nation" traveling road show stopped in Boston, where the former Alaska governor, her parents, her husband, and little Piper visited Paul Revere's house, the Old North Church, and Bunker Hill. Palin posted photos of that leg of her trip on the SarahPAC blog.

One moment that you won't find posted on the blog is Palin's response to reporters when they asked her who Paul Revere was. Instead of saying, "Come on, everyone knows who Paul Revere, the silversmith and patriot is," she stammered while saying this:

"He who warned, uh, the British that they weren’t gonna be takin’ away our arms, uh, by ringing those bells, and um, makin' sure as he’s riding his horse through town to send those warning shots and bells that we were going to be sure and we were going to be free, and we were going to be armed."

Needless to say, the lamestream media are having a field day with that gaffe.

Politico: Palin makes Bachmann look like Longfellow

Forbes: This certainly gives us an entirely new point of view to consider when examining our nation’s founding.

Mediaite: Palin’s version wasn’t exactly the official History Channel rendition of the tale...

ABC: Perhaps this week's lesson in the annals of American history was necessary for Sarah Palin.

Fox News has the video up leading their site, but no text or commentary. Perhaps they're speechless.

All of this reminds me of a fortune cookie I once received that said, "We teach what we most need to learn." In which case, ride on, "One Nation," ride on.

She is the most popular person in America right now. She has taken the spot light away from Obama since her tour started. And with that comment she just got another couple of days of fame. And from this media coverage she just made a couple million from this tour, She is sitting in her paid for sponsor bus. Eating her paid for food. And enjoying a night out on the town in her paid for limo.
Boy did she play the media. And she is saying sucker all the way to the bank.
With attacking her in the media the liberals sure made allot of money for her and she played them very well. She is not so stupid now is she.

But it appears that the popular version is not complete.

Copied from Legal In-sur-ec-tion- blog:
"In fact, as pointed out at Conservatives4Palin, Revere did in fact tell the British that the colonial militias, who had been alerted, were waiting for them. Here is the original historical text written by Revere (spelling in original, bold added):

I observed a Wood at a Small distance, & made for that. When I got there, out Started Six officers, on Horse back, and orderd me to dismount;-one of them, who appeared to have the command, examined me, where I came from,& what my Name Was? I told him. it was Revere, he asked if it was Paul? I told him yes He asked me if I was an express? I answered in the afirmative. He demanded what time I left Boston? I told him; and aded, that their troops had catched aground in passing the River, and that There would be five hundred Americans there in a short time, for I had alarmed the Country all the way up. He imediately rode towards those who stoppd us, when all five of them came down upon a full gallop; one of them, whom I afterwards found to be Major Mitchel, of the 5th Regiment, Clapped his pistol to my head, called me by name, & told me he was going to ask me some questions, & if I did not give him true answers, he would blow my brains out. He then asked me similar questions to those above. He then orderd me to mount my Horse, after searching me for arms"

Palin's short statement on the video was less than clear; that sometimes happens but the part of the statement which has people screaming -- that Revere warned the British that the colonial militias were waiting -- appears to be true.

And to think republicans think she is worthy of a presidential nomination... may be a Palin/Trump ticket would be great for the best reality show ever worthy of a moran ward.

I just can't wait to hear how the Right comes to her defense. Their revisionist explaination of what she said will be almost as amusing as her revisionist description of this historical American event. The Right's convolutions in her defense are almost as much fun as watching Miss Quittin' herself. Someone should do a picture book of Bachman, Palin and the Right's understanding of American history. I'm sure Marvel or DC would love to publish it.
Also, I get a kick out of the Right's use of the prejorative "libtard," taking, of course, the first letters of Liberal and combining them with "tard." Given the first letters of Republican are R-E, what would that make the right? (hint RE+tard). As they find no offense in Libtard, there should no offense in the left referring to them as REtards.

Who is more the fool.. The fool OR the fool that follows the fool. Wake up people!

I would hope that even those of us who don't know EXACTLY who Paul Revere was would be able to give a more elegant and coherent answer than that. This woman makes GW look like a suave sophisticated genius.

But I think all those words "elegant," "coherent," "suave" and "sophisticated" are elitist, Democratic, Washington insider, and anti-American words, and therefore by extension, fascist and socialist and somehow reeking of Islamic sharia law. Come to think of it, why is it called English anyway? Don't the English/British have a form of socialism? We need a new "American" language and dictionary, which includes only words that show how great America is. Even if we don't anything about the people who were around during its founding.

I love how all the Palin defenders who claim he was going to warn the British fail to address her "warning shots and bells" comments. Or the fact that no - no - contemporary American refers to the colonists as "the British." Or the fact that, according to Revere's own account, HE DID NOT SET OUT TO WARN THE BRITISH - he was captured, and only divulged information to the British regulars upon threat - in his own words - of having his brains blown out. He did not set out to warn the British. He did not ring bells. Palin defenders have turned an American patriot into a turncoat. Nice job of venerating the Founding Fathers.

Instead of Palin wrapping her bus in all that Patriotic symbolism pershaps she should have studied a little bit of American history while she was ON the bus..

"Thursday her 'One Nation' traveling road show ..."

That should read, "Thursday her 'One Nation' traveling CIRCUS ..."

She disgraces the Republican party and American politics, in general. With her on the campaign trail, the Repubs are digging their own graves.

NO JOKE. The Republican party needs better candidates. Period.

I think she has "Bill and Ted" as advisors. I loved the "ringin those bells" part.
Jeb please save us from this mess.

With all this running around all week and her "family vacation" and her taking the wind out of Romney's announcement for Presidency (low blow, even for Sarah) the only thing America will remember is another one of her "don't know anything" soundbytes. Yes Virginia, there rally is Karma.

One word reaction: FACEPALM

I don't know what is funnier, the comments Palin made or those who have come to her defense with the tale of Revere's capture. I might be going out on a limb here but the reason we call Revere an American revolutionary hero is not in fact that when captured he told the Redcoats what the colonists were up to. He is a hero because before that he quietly road around and spread the word to the colonists allowing them to arm and be prepared for the soilders preventing them from being taken by surprise.

But really aside from being an idiot, Palin clearly doesn't learn. I mean how many times does she have to get burned in front of a camera before she actually decides to do some homework so when she visits a historical place (on a tour supposedly about learning history) and gets some factual question that she has to know is coming at this point, she can actually answer it? The presidential campaign brought her in in August of 2008, so we are talking about 2 years and 10 months and she still hasn't adjusted. That shows a deeper and more disturbing stupidity.

How quick we ignore Obama saying he visited "all 57 states" during his 2008 campaign, or the fact he can't pronounce "corpsman" when talking about military medics. Or, what about his Freudian slip about his own Obamacare being laden with "inefficiencies". I have at least a hundred of gaffes on Obama. Time to move on with trying to humiliate Palin. If that's all you left-wing Marxists "got", then you're Muslim-in-Chief is a one-termer.

It isn't about Palin. "IT'S THE ECONOMY, STUPID!!!!!!"

it's amazing how the palin apologists here can't deal with cognitive dissonance. she clearly had no clue what she was talking about. like bachmann saying the shot heard round the world was in concord new hampshire. for all the tea party symbolism it's amazing how badly educated there people are. not stupid, just know nothings...

Amazing! This answer is word-for-word what Sarah wrote in response to the same question on her US History exam in eleventh grade. What a memory!

This woman is just monumentally stupid.

I would honestly prefer 20 years of Bush/Cheney to a single year of utter embarrassment that this woman would bring to the country.

30% of the voters will indeed say Sarah Clampet has it right, PR did indeed warn the British, ringing bells, where is the proof otherwise.....Obama was born in Kenya.... you know the rest of the story.

Perhaps she had sweaty palms and her ink smudged.

Palin is a shining example of what can happen when you don't value the importance of a good high school and/or college education.

The fluttering eyelids. Trying and failing to hide the ignorance she seems to realize she is displaying. Nowhere to run.
Trying to link Paul Revere with the NRA. "They weren't gonna be taking away our arms!" and enlisting him as part of her tribe.
The colossal ignorance.
A supposedly serious possible candidate for President?!?!
A person who would have significant influence over our educational system.
A person who lays claim to being someone to be taken seriously, someone to lead us in difficult situations, Commander in Chief of a gigantic military power with worldwide involvements!!!
Anyone who supports her.......what are they thinking???

RE: response to FML
"A 40+ year-old-woman" isn't supposed to recall very basic general knowledge regarding American history TAUGHT in 5th grade? How about 8th grade? And, again, how, was it 11th grade, or was that world history, where I learned you can see Kamchatka from Anchorage, or was it you could drink it in Anchorage? BTW, I'm 56 and I remember that Paul Revere didn't warn the British with his bells.... This opportunistic sideshow "celebrity" is indefensible.

It amazes me when Palin and her defenders blame the media for her own words. Question: Sarah you mentioned that you’ve read newspapers to increase your knowledge of foreign policy, can you name a newspaper that you’ve read? Answer: All of them. Question: Sarah who is your favorite founding father? Answer: All of them. Then she blames the lame stream media for asking her trick questions. Amazing that anyone could be a fan of hers.

"Sarah Palin claims Paul Revere warned the British"

Go to and read transcript of Revere's court deposition of circa 1775.

Paul road by moonlight to warn colonial residents to arm and assemble, ready for battle.
Later that same night he was taken prisoner by Britsh troops and told them (the BRITISH) truthfully what he had done, and because of his warning, colonial residents had armed and assembled for battle.

The LA Times and Andrew Malcolm obviously don't know what Sarah does!

"Not close to 57 states"

I agree. This one's far ahead of that tired utterance. This is fresh, and inventive, and not just misspoken. This one was carefully crafted.

And tomorrow she doubles down on it claiming she was misinterpreted.

Oh why oh why can't she run for POTUS in 2012. It'd be so much fun.

Alaska Palin - Minnesota Palin 2012

I don't think the problem is with whether or not she was correct with the term "British," but with the rest of the, er, "sentence."

Media = Egg on face

Posted by: Marty

Yes on Palin's, considering "He who warned, uh, the British that they weren’t gonna be takin’ away our arms, uh, by ringing those bells, and um, makin' sure as he’s riding his horse through town to send those warning shots and bells"

does not add up to

"He then orderd me to mount my Horse, after searching me for arms"

You see, you cannot be firing warning shots when you do not bear arms.

Next up: "Paul Revere was wrong, he did fire warning shots" by Sarah Palin

Just to quote another comment about Palin:
"Palin is correct. Paul Revere did warn the British soldiers who accosted him while he was on his ride. In Revere's own account of the incident , he states that he told these British officers that British troops had arrived and that about 500 Americans would be there shortly to meet them, due to Revere himself having warned the Americans of the arrival.

Possibly media people are confusing Paul Revere's own account and the historical record with the more widely read work of poetry about Paul Revere's ride by Longfellow. The poem is based on fact but is is art, not history. (Rather like confusing fictionalized movies with history).

Check with with Massachusetts Historical Society which has the letter."

I think that since there were children around she was tailoring her response with them in mind.

There are at least 2 dimwits here who claim Palin was correct, that Paul and others where actually themselves British.

However, from a letter by Paul Revere:
"There would be five hundred Americans there in a short time, for I had alarmed the Country all the way up..."

Clearly, he calls himself and others "Americans", not "British". Palin and her supporters are not only wrong, but represent Wrongness itself.

I love this woman. I can have an off day and really feel down in the dumps. But then Sarah will say something that is so mind numbingly stupid that I have to laugh out loud. This is going to be a spectacular election. Thank you Sarah, for being dumb and flaunting it in public.

Re: the idea that Palin was correct that Revere warned the British.

It seems that the issue is that there were two "warnings." Number one: the famous warning given to various American colonials by Paul Revere, during his ride, that the British Regulars were coming…and number two: the moment when Revere was stopped by British troops, and he warned them of the approach of a group of American soldiers. (This fact was revealed under duress; he was, after all, being held at gunpoint.)
The first warning is the actual reason for Paul Revere's ride, and is the reason that we still tell the story. The ride was undertaken for the sole purpose of warning the Americans that the British army was coming. This is not debated by anyone, and it is the central fact of the tale.
So, now we have to ask if Sarah Palin was referring to either the famous warning, or the second incident. Personally, I am not sure which she was thinking of. I doubt that she was talking about the second incident, but I am open to any evidence to the contrary.
Why do I doubt it? Because none of the statements that follow in her speech make reference to that incident. She asserts that Revere "warned the British that they weren't going to be taking away our arms." And that he did this by "ringing…bells." And that he fired "warning shots" during the ride to inform the British that "we were going to be secure, and we were going to be free." These are Palin's direct words about the "warning," and none of them refer to what happened during the second incident.
Perhaps more disturbingly, I can't find historical support for any of these statements. It is true that one of the reasons Revere undertook the ride was to prevent the British from seizing arms that the Colonials had stored in Concord. But there is no evidence that he warned the British not to seize those arms.

Why do people keep bringing up the "57 states" comment by Barack Obama? Do they not understand that was a joke? Sure, his delivery was a little off, but come on. Ever heard of that Beatles song "Eight Days A Week?" Obama has made actual gaffes, but that isn't one of them.

Do we know for a fact that the journalist asked her who Paul Revere was? That's pretty insulting to just flat out ask a former governor who Paul Revere is, I'm surprised they would go there. But then I'm surprised she didn't know the answer. Why am I still surprised by these things?

Tell me, R.J., what did she mean? I'm not seeing it. It looks like she is thinking really hard to remember who Paul Revere is, and then she says he warned the British "that they weren't going to be taking away our arms?" Putting the British aspect of her answer aside, this is also inaccurate. Paul Revere was not warning anyone that "they weren't going to be taking away our arms and that we were going to be free." we need a rider to precede the Palin Bus Tour and warn the next town that "The PALIN'S ARE COMING, THE PALIN'S ARE COMING!!"

Of course, one wonders how many lanterns the rider will wave, seeing as how
it appears that the lights on the Palin bus went out a long time ago!

Marty and James:

Palin is still wrong despite what you posted here. If she had have said, "Oh, Paul Revere, people think he warned the colonists but really he was threatened at gunpoint by the British, and he gave us up!" You might have a point. But she didn't. She said Paul Revere rode through the streets shooting (a gun?) and ringing a bell warning the British that they weren't going to take our arms because we were going to be free. That is even not close to the commonly reported story of Paul Revere, and it is even not close to the one you posted here either. Sorry.

How can any of you say the media was out to get her or trying to trip her up? She was at Paul Revere's house and was asked who Paul was! It's not as if she was out shooting moose and asked about Russia's GPD.
Besides, her incoherent mumbling of a answer could have easily been avoided if she just responded with "you know who he was". You tea-baggers need to find a new excuse to defend this idiot.

How could anyone NOT ask Sarah Palin a grade school question? That's like leaning over the edge of a cliff and not spitting. Hey Sarah, who was buried in Grant's tomb.... hint.... he spelt his name G-R-A-N-T.

All of you referencing Paul Revere's letter: You REALLY don't believe Palin was quoting some obscure historical document, do you? Even if so, the statement describes the arrest AFTER Revere's famous ride, not before. "Alarming the Country" meant he rode his horse through towns ... warning people the British were COMING ... not warning the British about our right to bear arms (??). The "one if by land, two if by sea" tactic was to use lights so the colonists would be as QUIET as possible so as not to tip off the British ... not ringing bells and sounding alarms.

Sigh. It doesn't matter what the facts are, you all are going to distort them to defend that snowbilly embarrassment no matter what idiocy she dreams up.

In fact, it seems that Sarah Palin knows her history better than Politico, Forbes, Mediate, ABC or any of the smug, whiny little libs on this board. As he stated in a 1789 letter, maintained by the Massachusetts Historical Society, Paul Revere DID warn a group of British soldiers who tried to detain him that the colonists were well armed and would not stand for any efforts by the 'Regulars' (as the British Soldiers were known) to disarm them. So Palin was precisely correct in her statement.

The rest of you may now go back to playing with yourselves.

For all you whom think this woman is a patriot and will save this country, you need to have your heads examined. Sarah Palin doesn't give a hoot about you or this country. The only thing she cares about is herself and making money. She is void of character, a sense of history and the ability to keep her mouth shut! Her name, voice and everything about her are like fingernails on a blackboard. I only wish that the media would stop covering her and maybe our long nightmare would be over and she would just go back to Alaska and shoot moose!

She'd better not go to Mount Vernon, or someone will ask her who George Washington was and she'll embarrass herself again.

Sorry Sarah I thought you miss spoke but I just watched, the educational film, "The Ride " the story of Paul Revere on YOUTUBE and it is exactly as you said. Looks like these reporters and MSM really don't know their history. Way To Go Governor Palin.

I can't BELIEVE there are those who are still trying to defend this woman's stupidity by saying she was correct and saying Revere DID in fact warn the British because the settlers were still British citizens, and he actually said the "regulars" are coming. First of all, rule #1 of public speaking or making public statements is know your audience. The majority of the American public was taught the "the British are coming!" story. And secondly, you guys need to re-read the story more clearly. She didn't say "he warned the British colonists the regulars were coming!!" She said "he warned the British that they weren't going to be taking away OUR arms." She clearly meant he warned the British redcoated soldiers that they were "in for it" and NOT British colonists yearning to be free that the King's military were on the way. Anyone who can't see the difference, and who can't, or won't, see that this woman is in fact a blithering idiot, is as stupid as she is.

Dumbest woman in America. No wonder the Republicans love her.

What do you expect from a nation where over 40% of the populace does not believe in evolution?

Who cares? Paul Revere was a socialist, communist and fascist who had sexual relations with the main stream media. He probably chose to ride a horse because he is a homosexual who doesn't care about the traditional values our country was founded on. Those main-stream homosexual Obama-liberals are destroying the very this very land that I conceived a child on.

I try not to think about it too much. Not thinking is easy for me so I do it often.

The thing is.. . she messed this up a number of ways. 1) He did not ride to warn the British, he rode to warn the Colonists. 2) he rode from Boston to Cambridge. (19 miles) on April 19th. 3) There were no musket shots and bells ringing.

Israel Bissell rode 345 miles on April 19-24th, from Watertown Mass to New York to Philadelphia. Warning the colonists. There were musket shots and bells ringing at each town he came through gathering people together to hear the news, culminating in the Philadelphia. Then he rode home.

She just doesn't know her history and mix and matches it all up.

Actually, Revere did warn the British of the militias.... Rock on like its 1773. maroons!

By the way, BO's election strategy is banking on a 57 state strategy...

Wow!! I'm speechless except for these words.

If stupidity is a plague she will contaminate the whole world.

I cant believe the President sent SEAL 6 after Osama and didnt get Palin yet ,whats he waiting for.

Our forefathers are looking at each other now and trying to figure out who to blame for this one.

We have a President that cant say no,Republicans that want to kill off the elderly, and Demoncrats that are inhaling helium.

What more can a totally dysfunctional government do ,We Should Fire Them All.

I am so grateful to the Times and other MSM outlets that are hyping this story in an effort to discredit Palin.

As others have pointed out, Palin was correct; it is those who, out of eagerness to discredit her, have not checked their own facts before going to press, who need a history lesson.

Palin does not express herself with the smooth glibness of an Ivy League dissimulator. She expresses herself they way a lot of us do: imperfectly, our mouths playing a constant game of catch-up with our minds, the occasional malapropism. It's only those who hate her who grasp so quickly at every sign of imperfection to facilitate her destruction.

So, thank you, Times. Like so many other media outlets, you betray yourselves by revealing what you truly are. Soon the number of Americans who realize it will reach critical mass -- if it hasn't already -- and you and the rest of your ilk will finally, finally be irrelevant and we will be able to relegate you to the trash heap of journalism.

What she said is true. Exactly. Little known history that the Times writer should have fact checked (and editor also) before looking mean and ignorant to those who know. Or what I believe is the Times editor didn't care about the truth, just counted on the public's (and his boss's) ignorance. Writer, editor and big boss LA Times, you scored points in beating up Palin when she gave factual history. Then you told the uneducated public she was wrong You were wrong, not her. And you haven't retracted it. That is scary. And sad. Go to hell Times.
