Ron Paul tries to convince Iowa that he's mainstream

Ron Paul

Ron Paul, the conservative Texas congressman who believes the Commerce Department should be abolished along with the National Endowment for the Arts, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, personal income tax and the IRS, told a crowd of Iowans that he is their mainstream candidate.

"We are mainstream if you believe in the things that I believe in," Paul said Tuesday in a banquet room at the Rose Bowl Lanes in Mason City, Iowa, the Des Moines Register reports. His beliefs are that the government should be small and responsible, and personal freedoms should prevail.

"Why shouldn't it be mainstream to have balanced budgets and sound money and limited government, personal liberty, keep the federal government out of the business of the state government here in Iowa?" Paul asked the crowd. "That, to me, seems to be mainstream."

Big government, Paul said, "is a very subtle, if not direct, attack on the way we live."

One area that Paul feels that government should restrict personal liberty is in regards to abortion.

"Life comes from our creator, not our government," Politico reported Paul saying in April. "Liberty comes from our creator, not from government. Therefore, the purpose, if there is to be a purpose, for government is to protect life and liberty."

Many have called Paul the godfather of the "tea party" movement, which has adopted his mantra of limited government. His son, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), is a tea party favorite.

It's true that "mainstream" is typically reserved for those who think $14 TRILLION dollar debts are somehow okay. That kicking the can down the road for our grandkids to solve is just fine. That endless wars and military entanglements overseas are perfectly reasonable. Yep, that used to pass for a mainstream politician in 2008.

Fast forward to 2012. Everyone knows the country is going broke. Medicare and Social Security are at risk of running out of money. The debt limit continues to go up and the corporations and banks got their hundreds of billions in bailouts, while the average taxpayer got stuck with the bill.

People are fed up and are not looking for the "mainstream" of 2008. The Democrats have offered no solutions to the country's problems and our economy remains mired in recession. It's time to give Paul's ideas a chance.

Unless for some reason you are endeared to the IRS and the personal income tax?

Ron Paul is not mainstream, because mainstream is not bare bones common sense. Ron Paul desires ultimate freedom. He has a healthy distrust for government so he wants it as small as possible, while just big enough to protect individual liberty. The view that he is extreme has come about because we are all used to government bloat and rolling over. Fiscally bare bones, and the death of things like the patriot act is what I want. Bush wasn't the guy. Obama isn't the guy. Let's get someone nutty enough to fight for Liberty in the White House.

So how's "Mainstream" working out for you?

$14 trillion in debt.
Undeclared wars in every direction.
Inflation, unemployment and a currency on the verge of collapse.
Erosion of civil liberties.
An American gulag in Cuba.
Your choice of naked body scan, or getting felt up in order to fly.

Maybe it's time for something different. Just sayin.

It's either electing Ron Paul or Dennis Kucinich, or an ideal ticket with the two of them..... or else it is the end of the United States as we all thought that it was. The Federal government should stick to what they were chartered with. Defend the borders, defend the nation, and oversee our interests in international commerce. What a sad state of affairs we now find ourselves in.
We can ill afford to choose yet another glamour candidate. It is time to elect a president who will step forward and begin to dismantle this confusing and convoluted mass of one sided regulations. It is time for someone to step forward and retrieve our nation back from the hands of international banksters. It is time, NOW, for a serious candidate for president who is not owned and controlled. May the People of Iowa, who feed a good part of the world as well as the nation, step forward in this endeavor and raise their voices in full support for Ron Paul. I fear for our country. I fear for our people.

Yes, Ron Paul is a mainstream candidate. he is a true conservative unlike the RINOs the GOP keep throwing up (romney and his Romneycare). vote for smaller government while you still have a choice

lots of people are waking up to the common sense of ron paul-
don`t be fooled into thinking that his ideas are not endorsed by many americans-
it may just take more time for some folks to realize the truth-they`ll get there sooner or later.....

dear Andrew Malcolm
almost half of the people i work with are ready to vote for Ron Paul.
the "mainstream" has moved out of your neighborhood into Ron's.
Ron wasn't trying to convince anybody about anything.
he was just stating facts - as usual.
i don't expect a fair shake from the msm -
but they're becoming more irrelevant by the day.
now if we can just get the votes counted honestly...

Ron Paul IS mainstream. Why are you trying to convince people he isn't? :p

Ron Paul is what this country needs! Ron Paul revolution.

I'll take Ron Paul's mainstream any day. These talking heads on TV have know idea what it is like to walk into a grocery store and wonder how prices could have gone up in the last two days. It is the economy stupid... and in the scheme of his ideas Paul will give us our liberty and restore jobs back to this country. He is getting more mainstream everyday.

Ron Paul will be a great president. I know we are all tired of the same old crap we have got since we started paying attention. When a single mom of three children, can raise her children with no help from government at all while working a textile job 40 years ago, and today it takes both parents with help from government to live the same lifestyle there is something very wrong with this system. I am ready for Ron Paul. I fear it is to late for us but maybe we can make it right for our children. In 10 to 15 years I would really like to see our great nation as strong as ever. Mainstream is all of us screaming it is time for Ron Paul.

Oh yes....Smear anyone you don't like lately?

If liberals care so much about personal liberty, perhaps some research on the topic is required before they take a position.

Ron is the true mainstream. Those who want peace, liberty and opportunity. Everyone knows it but YOU LA Times. You know if you start writing pro Ron Paul articles your newspaper would experience a huge surge in sunscriptions.

Doesn't feel the government should restrict liberty he just wishes the collective conscience would assume a fetus has a right to life.

Ron Paul is just what the doctor ordered! The American people have suffered and paid enough from these global governance and world government politicians that show more loyalty to the U.N. and NATO rather than the American people who they should be representing.

The European Union is a perfect example of this type of thinking they are broke and callapsing because of this kind of nonsense and these Global Governance politicians like Clinton, Obama, and both the Bush's. Our infrastructure is falling apart here at home while we spend billions on nation building elsewhere and wars that never seem to end but expand in all directions?

I never would have thought we would have groping and naked bodyscanners used on the American people and spying so much for privacy rights they'll take those too I guess if the American people freely want to give away your rights to the government.

This problem exists in both parties becasue both like to spend and both obviously love war and control they just put a different political spin on it. I guess thats why they call it political theater and the rich get richer while the poor get poorer.

This article should be renamed to "Los Angeles Times tries to convince Americans that Ron Paul's not mainstream. " Most of the people I know overwhelmingly favor Dr. Paul. If that's not mainstream, then I don't know what is.

Ron Paul is the most mainstream candidate in either party. Mainstream Americans want an end to the wars, smaller government, lower taxes, and elected officials who are incorruptible and stick to their principles.

He's got my vote, because he's not a flip-flopper and he's the only candidate with the guts and leadership to make real changes in Washington. Everyone else is just another empty suit who will promise you everything and deliver nothing.

I can't believe I actually found a reporter that... reports! Tony Pierce, thank you for keeping your personal feelings toward Presidential Candidate Dr. Ron Paul to yourself. It shows that you are a true professional, and I will be sure to put the LA Times on my favorites list. Thank you and I look forward to reading more about Ron Paul's run for President.

Nice to see your sarcasm again, Mr. Malcolm. We, the folks who don't think that Dr. Paul is nuts, didn't pay much attention to you since 2008, but now, our boy is back in the spotlight, and apparently, so are you. Enjoy your mockery! I suspect that you secretly love trolling the small government folk, because though we don't agree with many of your assessments (though I'll never argue that they are not well written), your articles definitely get noticed when the good Doctor starts getting press! Well played, sir...well played. :)

It's funny how the government controlled media spins Sara Palin into the "Good" non establishment Republican and Ron Paul as the "Not a chance in hell" Republican.

Stated another way - Sara the brave patriotic American and Paul the old crazy fart stick.

Say what you want but Ron Paul was RIGHT - is Right - and will continue to right!

And don't forget basic economics from macro 101:

If you spend money you don't have you cause inflation.

Inflation generally hurts the poor and middle class the most as they spend most of their income already on neccesities. If you are poor or middle class Ron Paul will help you by scaling down the military to defend, not occupy 750 military bases.

He will also leave enforcing drug prohibition to states. Saving BILLIONS. Inflation will slow down, safety nets will remain in place, and federal tax payers may even get some CASH back to spend and create jobs, after the deficit is started to pay down. What is bad about any of this? I am sick of the same the last 10 years.

I think a shift in the population's thinking has been occurring, especially over the last four years. Since our last presidential election, we have seen a major shifts, with the housing bubble popping, record foreclosures, high unemployment and underemployment, rising prices of food, gasoline, and other items demonstrating a weakness of the dollar and economy, and people really getting sick of these endless US foreign wars of aggression and occupation. People are disappointed by Obama, who seems to have reneged on most of his major campaign promises.

People are getting sick of the $14 trillion in government debt, massive yearly deficits adding to the debt each year, and the expensive and counterproductive foreign wars. And people are starting to wake up to the fact that the TSA groping and other infringements of our individual privacy and rights by the federal government has gone way too far. Main Street America is beginning to see that the US government is way too big, way too expensive, way too in debt, and way to powerful. This is not the way the country was run 50 years ago, and it was never supposed to be run this way. The concept of respecting the Bill of Rights, the Constitution, and a free society IS mainstream now. The American people are ready for Ron Paul for President. His common sense and dedication to the Constitution is mainstream for Main Street, even if it seems foreign to Andrew Malcolm. And Ron Paul's stance on the role of the federal government regarding abortion has been somewhat misrepresented in this article.

I staunchly disagree with his position on abortion, but I I agree with him on almost everything else. He's a bit too statist for my taste, but he has changed the way I understand politics and economics. This is why I will not only vote for him, I will volunteer as much time and money that I can spare to see this man get elected. I'm so glad to finally see people joining his camp, despite all the flack he gets, and will continue to get from the establishment. I agree that Paul is not mainstream, but I get the impression that this writer wants Paul to stay that way. Sorry Pal... I don't think that will happen.

Don't sweat about abortion... "In 2008, approximately 1.21 million abortions took place in the U.S" that leaves over 300 million people who are unaffected by abortion.
We have bigger problems.

He, personally, is against it, but what do you expect, he was a "baby doctor" and has seen it all. He KNOWS what abortion really is, pulling a baby out of its mother and tossing it into a bucket to die. He is against Federal Government regulating it and for leaving it up to the states.

If Ron Paul gets elected and "Restores America" most of those abortions wouldn't be necessary anyway because the mothers would have jobs or husbands with jobs and they would welcome the child.

Ridiculous...this conspiracy kook in not even a conservative. He's a libertarian with a dose of 9/11 "truth movement" insanity thrown in.

What I "LOVE" about reporters is the fact that Though Dr. PAUL wants to end these federal LAWS, REGULATIONS & DEPARTMENTS--- is so that they states can fund and regulate similar programs more localized---

This doesn't "GET RID" of the benefits of these things--- it puts the decisions for these programs in a more centralized and Local control-- where the residents can vote on the decisions and proposals--- without a bureaucrat getting in the way with special agendas and special interest--

Heck if I want the senators or congressmen of california making decisions for the entire state of UTAH and vs versa---

That's the problem with BIG FED---

Local liberty through local vote--- making our neighborhoods reflect our majorities moral values!

I think it is pretty obvious - if only from the comments here and Mr Pauls following in the less controlled internet - that the LA times this time is the one who is not mainstream.

Mr Paul is the only one who could challenge Obama - there is no-one else who can this time promise the much needed significant "change" more believably.

Andrew long time, Well I can see you are at it again... Early don't you think?
throwing in the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Dept. of Housing and Urban development.. Nice, I have to say you, "your left handed attacks" are getting crafty, or that he is against abortion. If I understand Ron Paul's positition on Abortion, He is personally against it, and against federal money being used for it, but it would be left up to the State Governments to decided what is legal...You forgot to mention he is AGAINST these WARS! and would end them, which would save the TAXPAYER 1 TRILLION in UNFUNDED! SPENDING! OOPS guess you missed that little tid bit of news! As for protecting liberty, He believe's that Life starts at conception, and that "life" deserve's the same protection as anylife... But hey I know you are still alittle miffed that Grumpy McTroll did not get elected!
but here we are again, what is it with you? What part of the Concept of Freedom don't you understand? Freedom come's with great Personal Responsiblilty and hard work...

The Right:Left, Conservative:Liberal dichotomy has no usefulness and does not describe Ron Paul's political stance. The proper discussion should be founded on Freedom:Statism. You can be a Conservative Statist (e.g. neo-con) or Liberal Statist (e.g. Progressive, Socialist), are our current two mainstream parties, which really have very little difference between them.

If one is willing to entertain some intellectual curiosity and investigate who/what Ron Paul offers, reject the media paradigm that he is some sort of "conservative extremist", you will find that his freedom based agenda is absolutely mainstream in the sense that it supports the core values of most American citizens, both "Liberal" and "Conservative". I propose that you are likely to become a believer in his agenda too.

You are incorrect sir! Ron Paul does not want the Federal Government to mandate any abortion laws in all 50 states. He beleives that this decision should be left to the people within the states. People choosing and making decisions, what a terrible "unmainstream" idea. Keep up the smear campaign though, its only adding fuel to the fires of TRUTH!

I am a Ron Paul Republican
Mr. Ron Paul 2012 for Republican Nom and President

What? You didn't know there wasn't art in the world before the national endowment for the arts was created in 1965? Amazing!

And you are dead wrong about abolishing the Commerce Dept. It does the census, patents and deals with international trade which he supports because they are in constitution. It does not mean he supports all the other crap they do with their $9.1 billion dollars in 2011.

the reason Ron Paul supporters get their news from the Internet is because main stream media (bought and paid for media) is so bias that it's comical. And we are not just online, we are your neighbors, your friends, your coworkers and we are everywhere and we stand with Ron Paul because he stands for us.

there's an old adage that there’s not a dime’s worth
of difference between the Republicans and Democrats. On the whole, the parties
are indistinguishable, both committed to an ever larger, more intrusive, more
powerful, and more expensive Leviathan in Washington. Vote Ron Paul 2012 and lets show the party what real change looks like

Ron Paul is right - the mainstream is catching up to his views. Remember when he was one of the few people protesting the Afghan war? Now something like 2/3 of America wants us out. A similar proportion wants cuts to the federal spending. Freedom is becoming more popular.

Is your job perfect? Economical job placement assistance. www.jobwaltz.com

Good article. I love Ron. Did anyone see the funny story about Paul's new stance on the gold standard???

http://milkthebull.com/2011/05/16/ron-pauls-campaigns-for-cinnamon-standard/

Are there any good journalists out there anymore? (not that recall ever reading a good mainstream journalist anyway...)

The sad thing is, his title and his motives are seen throughout his writing as trying to smear Dr. Paul and his passion and healthy beliefs but in all honesty (as somebody who knows about how detrimental those things the author listed are) I thought it made Dr. Paul look even better. Who the hell needs the IRS?

What I want the author to do is explain why we need all of these "departments" run by the government...and why private institutions and/or charities can't just get the same things accomplished without bankrupting everybody including the states and country itself? I'm sure he would have explained this if he thought he had a viable argument...

Shame on you Andrew Malcolm for denouncing (and ignoring his many supporters) the biggest hope we have in America. You surely could have picked one of the many pictures of Mr Paul showing him in all his health and energy - there are dozens much better ones around than the one you managed to dig out.

But of course, if he get's his way there may be no Americans dieing overseas - and possible fewer wars in general to report on. Wars, terrorist fears and possible economic collapse certainly means great business for greedy profit oriented news channels.

Thank god more Americans begin to realize how we are manipulated by greedy media.

I'll be voting for Ron Paul in 2012 - even if I have to write him in, like I did in 2008.

LONG LIVE LIBERTY!

Corrupt media sells corrupt polls
controlled media controlled polls

This is awesome, isn't it? Last election, there was enough "blackout" and censorship coming from the media so smear stories weren't necessary because Ron Paul was put on ice by the media AND the Beltway "duopoly".

Now, however, there is NO putting this wise old cat Ron Paul back in the bag... He's here to stay, people believe in his honesty and integrity, and if rags like the LA Times don't readjust their brain cells to accommodate the "truth" about our core beliefs in America, then there will most likely be an slight uptick in unemployment on the LA job market in 2013.

America is NOT and never will be a Socialist, Fascist, or "Communist-lite" society. We will never resemble the former theocracies and dictatorships of Europe. Europeans are thankful for their Socialism because it's a damn sight better than being "subjects" and serfs as their ancestors were. Anyone who pines for EU Socialism needs to get themselves a passport.. and USE IT..

This election is, I believe, our last opportunity to take the iron gate of socialism
completely off its hinges and take it to the nearest scrap dealer (who will have just purchased the metal sign from the LA Times building). The warm and fuzzy "theorists" like Comrade Malcolm who promote living a "collective"vanilla lifestyle rather than choosing our own flavors will indeed be out of place in the Ron Paul environment. Either adapt or be prepared for some serious depression. It's happening before your eyes.

I applaud all the rest of you who commented on this article. If you look through the comment sections of Ron Paul-based articles nationwide, you will see the transformation taking place, and you will also see the venom and vitriol being ramped up as it gets closer to election. Keep commenting!!!! Flood these "rags" with the truth..

What an impressive list of responses. It almost gives me hope for a Ron Paul candidacy. It would be well if many of us registered democrats left from trying to elect change in the Obama vs. McCain ticket, now changed over and registered as Republicans. In 'O8, Ron could not get enough electoral votes to get the nomination. We need to change that for the '12 run so that we can vote in the primaries. The government owns and regulates the election, they own Diebold and the like, and finally the Electoral College is still, regretfully in play. Paul will need convincing wins and the primaries will tell the tale. We need to become again the reflection of Yamamoto's words when he said that "I fear that all that we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant."

Mainstream is undeclaired wars, 100 trillion and more worth of unfunded liabilities, debt upon debt, SS broke and Andrew Malcolm and his limo statists thinking I should pay for their free lunch. Too bad the hood is crumbling around all around the statists. But like good liars the GOP and DNC will blame each other. Thank god for Liberatian Ron Paul and his version of "mainstream". This was the America I knew before the "free lunch" crew took power. These fools have bankrupted everything.

"Personal liberty" has nothing to do with a mother aborting an unborn child. Is murder a personal liberty? Absolutely not, because by definition it is another person who is being murdered. Believe it or not, an abortion does not kill the mother. It kills the innocent unborn child. Ron Paul is for personal liberty in every way. As far as abortion goes, he is for personal liberty for the unborn child.

I watched the first debate and Gary Johnson seemed to be on the fringe. Herman Cain, Tim Pawlenty, and Rick Santorum had nothing intelligent to say. What was real telling from the debate was the cheering for Ron Paul's mainstream ideas. I am shocked he does not draw more positive press. It seems he has a large part of the conservative base supporting him as well as independent voters.

Ron Paul is mainstream if you were to talk to an average intelligent freedom loving American. It's the ccorporate owned media and corporate owned candidates who say he isn't. Look how much press Romney is getting. Look how much press Palin is getting and she hasn't even announced anything. Ron Paul is the only one I see beating Obama so I guess it will be another 4 years for Obama. If you claim to be a Tea party member, prove it people. Elect someone who will actually turn this country around. Romney, Palin, Bachman will not do it. Sorry.

The "mainstream" is nothing but an oligarchy control mechanism. If you listen to the media then Ron Paul is not mainstream. If you listen to the people, Ron Paul is mainstream.

Ron Paul is NOT mainstream. Mainstream polititians talk but never say anything. Mainstream polititians don't uphold their oath to the office they took. Mainstream polititians work for corporate lobbyists, not the American People. Mainstream polititians never give a straight answer. Do you consider yourself "mainstream" Andrew?

Ron Paul was an OB/GYN for 20+ years before becoming a congressman. That means he was a doctor who worked exclusively with women. That would also infer that he had a pretty solid understanding of women's health issues as well. As a Libertarian, I would think he would not want the government to tell anyone what they can or can't do with their bodies.

The honest and brilliant Thomas E. Woods recently said in Los Angeles, the contemporary mainstream opinion occupies about a 3 inch area between Hillary Clinton and Mitt Romney. And that's just exactly the way establishment mouthpieces like the LA times likes it. Yuck.
