Moderator Mitch Fox said that Sharron Angle had been quoted on several occasions saying that she favored abolishing the federal Department of Education. He noted a number of initiatives by the department, such as Pell Grants, to support students.

Was it correct, he asked, to say she favored abolishing such efforts?

‘Totally incorrect,’ she said.

Angle did not explicitly call for eliminating the department, but said it was dominated by bureaucrats who ‘skimmed money’ from the states and offered little in return, except unfunded mandates. She said the department pushed ‘one-size-fits-all’ policies, such as No Child Left Behind.
