“OMG. President Lincoln has been shot! Wait, whoa, my internet connection is SUH-LOW.”

Although comedian Steve Martin has never played D.C.’s Ford’s Theater -- now a national historic site -- it’s good to see that his jokes don’t date from that era. Most of them, anyhow.

[UPDATE: A previous version of this post said Steve Martin had also tweeted under the username iamstevemartin. This is incorrect. Stevemartintogo is Martin’s first and only Twitter account.]

Martin tweeted the above last night on his new Twitter account. Since last week he’s been @stevemartintogo, and alongside attracting more than 90,000 followers he’s been back to his old form (but with new material). Martin’s also at Facebook (less funny, more banjo).

Steve Martin’s recent Twitter gems include:

Idiot in front of me is TEXTING WHILE DRIVING. This is annoying: I have coffee in my right hand, so I have to type this with my left thumb!

Going to bed now. It’s late. Wait, I’m in Korea. It’s noon. Hey, let’s have lunch! ...

By the way, it’s a beautiful day where I am. I only wish I were where I am.

Yes I want to be verified more than anything.

Martin, perhaps unused to Twitter’s 140-character limitations -- not least its verification system for celebrities -- is stringing together many of his tweets to form a narrative -- the jerk! -- in a bid to show he’s the smartest tweeter out there (what is he, a man with two brains?) Some more:

My new children’s book, Late for School, is debuting at N. 6 on the New York Times list. Why not N. 5? 5 is all I ever wanted. Wah! WAH!

6? 6? Stewing in my juices. Life has let me down.

6

Late for School happens to be one of the best children’s boooHooHooHoo...aw never mind.

Just learned that Alec Baldwin doesn’t have a book on the NYTimes list. YEAH! Alec Baldwin: nowheresville. Steve Martin: 6 I love 6!

I was told if I provide an Amazon link the book would shoot up. Please, that’s just crass.
