Social media wrap: Glenn Beck rally, Sarah Palin light up Google Realtime

Glenn_beck_rally_sarah_palin

Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin lit up the newly launched Google Realtime instant search engine before, during and after their joint rally on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial that pledged to "restore honor" to, er, something or someone or other.

A steady stream of about three Beck-related tweets every second appeared on the Twitter post tracker under the search phrase "restoring honor," which was the No. 1 topic on Google Trends for much of Saturday morning.

"Glenn Beck rally" and "Sarah Palin" also were top or near the top of  Google's "hot searches" category throughout the day. Beck is a conservative radio and TV show host while Palin is the former governor of Alaska and one-time Republican VP candidate widely believed to be exploring a run for president in 2012.

Google launched its Realtime function that allows tracking of individual tweets by keyword to much media scrutiny this week, but judging by its coverage of "real-time" tweets containing the phrase "restoring honor," it could be considered a successful....

...test run amid extremely heavy Twitter traffic. Google's search engine displays the tweets in its main window and links to more traditional media sources in a separate list to the right.  Users can search for tweets in real time or track tweets that were sent at a particular time of the day.Photo of the massive crowd on National Mall for Glenn Beck rally 8-28-10 via Tammy Bruce

Peak activity on Realtime was at 11:12 a.m. when concurrently more than 100,000 were watching a video relay of Beck's rally on Facebook. Beck has more than 275,000 Twitter followers, while Palin has more than 2 million Facebook followers

Most of the major news outlets shaped their Saturday Web coverage around Beck's rally, with the event that drew thousands to Washington, D.C., on the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech featuring in the central main display of news sites from CBS and CNN to the Los Angeles Times and the other one in New York.

Most major outlets also tweeted their coverage.

Beck, who repeatedly urged supporters to turn to God during his religion-fueled address, was strangely quiet on his social-media pages.

Palin, meanwhile, tweeted:

"Amazing. We are here. America is beautiful. Washington, DC is filled with extraordinary patriots today to honor our U.S. military."

(UPDATE: 8:12 p.m. Using aerial photography, an expert independent company commissioned by CBS News estimated the rally crowd at between 78,000 and 96,000.)

"...joint rally on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial that pledged to "restore honor" to, er, something or someone or other."

You can't simply report the news, can you? You have to editorialize. You're one the reasons Beck's there in the first place, because you traded journalism for idealogy. If Obama ever stops suddenly, your nose will be right up his butt.

ABC News and the Associated Press are reporting between 250K and 500K people were at the rally today. That is amazing!

Thousands? The spin never ends for you jourbalists, does it? If Mr. Obama had proposed a rally on the mall, you'd predict millions in attendence before the words got out of his mouth! You're so in the tank for him that you've grown gills. Enjoy the Kool-aid while it lasts!

Graet Job Glen Beck! I wish I could have been there. I watched the Rally from home and I am following the blogs!

So many twits at the rally.
Beck/Palin Twits of 2010.
All hail the mindless demiG-Ds.
More Wars

Palin is a true patriot whose spirit cannot be destroyed by vicious criticism from political opponents or the left wing media in this country...she is what this country needs in the White House...not some left wing, social experimenter who wants to make everybody equal .......equally poor that is.

Minorities have to beware of those attempting to restore traditional values, they were the values of the Old South. The new values are more egalitarian, it believes that a person regardless of color is given an equal chance to work at a good job. There was a time when only a white man was a king in his castle, but those days are gone with the wind, never to return.

The world breathed a sign of relief when America elected Barack Obama - a principled, intelligent and articulate leader. Bush did immense damage to America's position in the world and damaged your economy by fighting an unaffordable trillion dollar war in Iraq on the basis of misrepresenting the source of the 9/11 attacks. Electing Sarah Palin as president would make America a global laughing stock and accelerate your great country's decline into irrelevance. The democratic world and the economies of freedom deserve leaders of the highest caliber. Elect Palin and I might as well trade in my Jeep for a Toyota and use Lenovo rather than HP - brand America will be trashed.

CBS News, an enemy of the people, estimates the crowd at 87,000, and AP says it was "thousands."

So reality says it must have been 300,000.

AP & LA Times - a running sewer of disinformation and hate speech.

"CBS estimated the rally crowd at 78,000 - 96,000"

The crowd was between 500,000 - 1,000,000.

My comment suggesting the actual attendance at this event is unworthy of being posted ? What a collection of intellectually dishonest cretins.

It is time that TEA party organizers stop allowing Sarah Palin to hijack it's agenda and philosophy. She doesn't accurately represent the core of the TEA party which is smaller, less intrusive government, protection of national borders from illegal aliens, decreased taxes, an end to pointless overseas military excursions and adventures, and an end to the debasement of American currency by the Federal Reserve Board and international bankers. There is ample momentum for a third political party in the US that maintains these core values. Neither the Democrats nor Republicans are ready to offset the status quo and are both afraid of the consequences of a third political party that will topple the reign of the power brokers, currency speculators, corporate parasites and the financial elite.

This Glenn Beck was a travesty and a sham just to overshadow Martin Luther King Jr.'s anniversary. This was purposedly done to show the African-Americans that 'white' Americans still call the shots. If you all don't see this than you are the ones who downed-played blogger Andrew Breitbart's dirty trick on Sherrod to prove the NAACP are racists.

Now Glenn Beck is going to act coy and say that "God" told him to do this.

CBS,
From this day forward, I vow never to watch a promotion or program associated with any of your businesses or 200 affiliates. YOUR WORDS, A CROWD BETWEEN 78-96,000 AT THE GLENN BECK RESTORE HONOR RALLY, ARE DISINGENUOUS & JOURNALISTIC MALFEASEANCE. I stood in the press area, elbow to elbow, with FOX, CSPAN, ABC, and roughly 100 other independent news reporters.
I lived in, and, frequent New Orleans and LSU, where people regularly celebrate, NOT RIOT. Crowd estimation (and creative parking- is that a word) are second nature to our people.
Suppose in today's world, we chose to ignore the massive Chilean or Haitian suffering. CBS, you chose to ignore a supreme, hopeful, message to our countryman, GOD, and the Herculean effort of many.
Shame on you.

Michael Peneguy, DDS

What's more interesting from our perspective about this Glenn Beck phenomenon is that "The Folks in Control," however one might characterize them in terms of race, status, class, wealth, geographic location or whatever, allowed our current situation to develop over arguably the last 50 - 100 years, and now there are complaints by a vocal group of concerned citizens.

Is it possible, as postulated by some, that the liberal, conservative, progressive, corporate and banking interests, and libertarian POWER FORCES in our society are laughing all the way to the bank, and that we minions with little money and power (the members of the Institute for Applied Common Sense included) are the ones complaining? And that because of new technological advances in communication and the power of the Internet, the voice of the minions is now being disseminated with greater force, essentially saying, "Stop! Enough is enough!"?

Is this arguably populist movement somewhat similar to the one led by "the Great Commoner," William Jennings Bryan at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th Centuries?

Is what we are experiencing simply the most vocal expression of the perhaps 80% of we citizens at the bottom of the heap?

Americans need to wake up the fact that Beck is simply another opinion pushing charlatan who is a product of mormon cult theology. He does not possess a single ounce of journalistic integrity, he has no qualifications and he is definitely not a true conservative. But then, what can anyone expect from someone who can't find anything filthier than their own personal reflection. Since people like Beck cannot survive on the basis of any personal merits, they survive by puting others down with lies and half truths in order to feel good about themselves. The truth about Beck is that he a dry mormon alcoholic who never got the counseling required for alcholics. He flippantly throws around Christian terms like "God", "Jesus", "Holy Spirit" as well as voices of other so called "Spirit Powers" on his radio talk show. Beck is a mormon in active standing with the mormon church and is not a Christian. Mormonism teaches many gods, that the god of the earth was once a man who attained godhood status, there is no trinity, the cross of Christ means nothing and that Jesus Christ and Satan were brothers. Because Beck does not possess a single ounce of journalistic integrity, he is the perfect abortion poster child for Fox Network. The people who love what Beck says are no different than the impressionable sheep who loved every speech made by Adolph Hitler in his early years when he brought Germany into an era of economic prosperity. These same sheep (like the ones who listen to and believe the lies of Beck) also blindly followed Hitler into one of the darkest chapters of world history. Beck and the Fox Network both cater to the same lowest common denominator of demagogery. The man would not know the first thing about God as he is a mormon. Someone should ask him which of the many mormon gods he kept talking about during his argument with himself on Saturday. Unfortunately, these teabaggers out there do not realize that Beck is talking about a different god than that of Christianity, Judaism or Islam and that he has been a product of mormonism cultism from the day he started doing a radio talk show as an opinion pusher.
