Bill White (Texas):  Before the 50th anniversary of the Fourth of July, Jefferson wrote that the each Fourth may be "to the world ... the signal of arousing men to burst the chains under which ... superstition had persuaded them to bind themselves, and to assume the blessings and security of self-government." Then on July 4, 1826, he passed from this life, as did that great Revolutionary, his political foe and dear friend, John Adams.
