A citizen's required reading for July 4th: The Declaration of Independence (with music)

The United States' Declaration of Independence may well be the most cited yet least read or understood document in American history.

Some have suggested over the years that each responsible U.S. citizen should take the occasion of the Nation's birthday to read that precious document every year, something like pausing at Thanksgiving to give thanks or at New Year's to ponder what's past and ahead.

Obviously, we can't require that. But The Ticket can facilitate that. So here it is, in its historic entirety. For those who are curious to see how the historic document evolved, the wording refined and trimmed, through several writings, including those funny s's that look like f's, they can view side-by-side versions right here.

And for those who'd like a little musical accompaniment, we have a special treat this July 4th. It's a video version of the anthem performed by one of our favorite singers, a woman with an amazingly crystaline voice who writes her own songs. We met her here as a Ticket follower on Twitter. IN CONGRESS, JULY 4, 1776


The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen United States of America:

When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

— That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,

— That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed.

But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

— Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such....

.... is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States.

To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.

He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of....

...large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their Public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.

He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected, whereby the Legislative Powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.

He has obstructed the Administration of Justice by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary Powers.

He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.

He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance.

He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.

He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil Power.

He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:

For quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:

For protecting them, by a mock Trial from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:

For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:

For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:

For depriving us in many cases, of the benefit of Trial by Jury:

For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences:

For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies

For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:

For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.

He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.

He has plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.

He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation, and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & Perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.

He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.

He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.

In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence.

They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.

We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare,

That these united Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States, that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do.

— And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.

Great article! L.A. Times - I am amazed! Keep this up and you may not only start to re-capture your fleeing readership but also gain a whole new batch.

Interesting how our oppressors are now corporate whores who have stolen our government and outsourced our jobs, with the Republicans, Libertarians, and the majority of Democrats supporting and endorsing their oppressive and evil tyranny under the guise of love for country and the Holy Spirit.

A progressive, "revolutionary" document ... the Declaration of Independence.

It's principles are the antithesis of the corporate state whether that is called a monarchy, or as in the case of our present form of government, a plutocracy.

Every liberal, progressive and genuine conservative (if there are any remaining) can find inspiration in the Declaration. Neocons, Teabaggers, Bushites and major party hacks should be quivering at the meaning of the Declaration of Independence and know that their days are numbered if average Americans once again take the words to heart and demand that they be the basis for our nation's government.

Unfortunately too many people confuse the "pursuit of happiness" to mean a guaranteed "right to happiness". When government gets out of the way, more people can pursue happiness than when government tries to enforce equal happiness. Because instead of equal happiness, you get equal misery.

Happy Fourth of July and may the next American Revolution V 2.0 occur on November 2, 2010.

Excellent idea! Every single American should be required to read this, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. And, it should be taught exactly what each document means in our schools.

It is time to evict Obama and his Radical Commie henchmen, "By any means necessary", before they can do any more harm to our nation.

God, substitute the King they were referring too with Obama and this is what is happening today!! When are we going to wake up and realize Obama is a tyrannical dictator in the sheep's clothing of a President. I pray this country realizes this before it's too late.

DON'T TREAD ON ME

When the people fear their government you have tyranny.

When the government fears the people you have liberty.

Is this about the King of Britain or the US government? Our government is guilty of so much of the same stuff. Sounds like our country is right back where we started when this Declaration was written. But now we just take all the crap and we say "thank you, more football & American Idol please."

You know, the king wasn't all bad and the colonists all good, I think.

One of the beefs the colonists had against the king is that the king issued the Proclamation of 1763. The indians were quite upset by the encroachment of European settlers on their lands. The proclamation forbade all white settlement on Indian territory, ordered those already there to withdraw, and limited future settlement. Any expansion of settlements had to be approved by the indians and just compensation paid. (Look it up in an encyclopedia, you will see this is correct.)

I think the king would be considered most correct today.

To help further placate the indians, the proclamation also established new British territories in America and a vast British-administered indian reservation west of the Appalachians.

The colonists apparently hated this and thought it infringed on their rights.

I'm only writing this to bring some balance, because I am sure most posts will be blowing our own horns and declaring how we are the best people in the world and always have been.

It's a bright day for America. We can celebrate our founders and the beauty and wisdom contained in this document. Further, we can now see the light of November approaching when we regain the country and neuter presbo along with his wretched administration and congressional democratic "leadership". It is indeed going to be a bright day on November 3, 2010! From there, to get to the beginning of the recapture we need only foil any legislative attempts during the lame duck session in November and December. Ah, it is going to be so nice to see our dear leader eat crow.

It's as if the Founding Fathers were describing Obama and the Democratic Party. They are the true tyrants in America today.

One of the Best documents in the world! This and the Constitution have made us a great country! It's too bad, the president, congress and the media are in the mist of bringing us down! Kagan, doesn't believe that people have inalienable rights, yet she will be one of the Supreme court justices (She doesn't believe the Constitution either!). Our forefathers had the experience of a king and being suppressed to develop a country that tried to avoid ever being under that type of government again.

Our founding fathers fought for their Liberty and
many paid for it with their lives. Now we are gladly
surrendering our Liberty to a gang of thugs that presently
are in power in the White House and Congress. They have
changed our constitution
from: "We the people"
to: "We the government people"
I believe that it is too late for our country to change.
We were a sinking ship like the "titanic" when Obama took
office. Now we are steering for the rocks as well.
Just look how evil and twisted we have become:
1. Hate Crimes to punish pastors is now the law of the land
2. Mandatory Medical or fine, and imprisionment now law
3. Nat'l day of prayer canceled in favor of muslim prayers
at capital instead.
4. Soddomy was once illegal in ALL 50 states, now it's law.
5. Gay marriage is being forced on us by the courts.
6. We are spending money like drunken sailors.
7. Everthing we buy comes from China, so we no longer have
any REAL jobs, but we must somehow continue the pay-o-la
for the elite class of deserving government workers.
Does ANY christian want to live in a country like we have
become ?

The pursuit of happiness DID NOT mean the pursuit of hedonism - which is what liberal tyrants WANT ignorant peons to believe. The more obsessed you are with instant gratification the less likely you are to educated yourself and stand up against tyranny. Stop falling into their hands like the brainless sheep they judge you to be.

Starts out as a good read, but gets too whiny.

This should be required reading by all American students each year. Each generation needs to be educated about the preciousness of liberty and the wisdom and vision of our founding Fathers. Thank you for publishing this on this most auspicious of days.

Wow, I feel like I'm reminiscing. Great document, tells the 300 million americans what this country is for. Hopefully America comes back around to this time in 1776.

The singer did a nice job. I hate the way that so many big name singers butcher the national anthem trying to outdo each other. Very nice to hear a solid performance of this beautiful song.

Outstanding, well done to LA Times to present this....i want to thank those serving in harms way at this moment and also wish to express gratitude to the families as well whom are enduring difficulties while separated from their loved ones...i count my blessings to be an American, alive and well despite the current environment in our country...i support my president and wish my fellow Americans well and maintain optimism and hopeful outlook for our nation, our children, and our world, God bless and infinite thanks.....

When in the course of human events...those elected by citizens...because they promise and vow to represent the citizens...but in fact reveal that they seek anti-individual, anti-liberty, anti-America goals (compared to the principles openly stated in the Declaration of Independence)...when these despicable ones reveal themselves to in fact be the new tyrants, the new usurpers...then these new tyrants and usurpers...and their plans and agendas...should and ought to be abolished...

Reading or hearing for those that are blind of the CFeclaration of Independance and the Constitution of the United States of America and the Pledge of Allegiance to The Flag of the United States, should be mandatory for all citizens of this great country. Any immigrant that wants to become a citizens of the These United States should know what each of the readings mean and consist of and how they came to be. All should be reminded of which God these forefathers of ours were referencing when they wrote them. Probably the most important thing that all of us need to know and either read or hear, would be the TEN COMMANDMENTS. The idea of Separation OF not FROM should be clearly expressed to all citizens of my country and yours and that God is not to be removed from this land either in government nor out. At this time, we have Americans fighting a war through out the world against islamic terrorists and we need to pray for our military every day. Pray for our president and our military and government leaders and pray for our citizens that when it comes time to vote into office new leaders, that we make the right choices. Bring our moral compass back to our lives and let us continue to be FREE. Our military folks are willing to give up their lives for us, Our president is supposed to be in charge of all that defend this land and has been hired by us to do what the constitution has instructed him to do to keep Life, Leberty and the Persuit of Happiness in our lives, not just his. The men and women that we have hired to handle our government should do their jobs and not try to change our country. We do have laws and they should be enforced at all costs. I guess the founders actually meant "merciless Mexican Savages" not "merciless Indian Savages"

The video really promoted her but did nothing to promote what the song is about. Disappointing.

I have been so upset by what our poor excuse of a government has been doing to us and to the poor victims of the jackbooted thugs which serve the corporation run government that I cannot salute the flag of the US anymore. It does not represent my beliefs anymore. Let Bush salute it, let McCain, let Obama serve as its commander in chief, oppressing a country that has no equivalent force to defend itself but the iron will of the people it has failed to subdue under its jackbooted tyranny.

It is sad on this wonderful day that we are living under the soft tyranny of the Obama administration. I thank you for publishing this one of the greatest documents of human kind. It is my hope that many people will read this and realize what we are allowing to happen to our Inalienable Rights. We are loosing our Rights not from some foreign power inflicting it's will on us but by a domestic power grab by unscrupulous people intent on forcing their tyrannical ideology on us.

Nov. 2010 will be a turning point for this nation, will we submit to the tyranny or will we declare our intention to throw off this oppressive government. Passed out $250 "bonus" checks, for the populace that needs to get off their duffs and work or those who have FAILED to save for the later years.

99 weeks of Funemplyment. Why look for work, when you can suck-off the system for nearly two years?

Cut our "Medical Flexible Spending" accounts under the premise that if there isn't any money, prices won't go up.

Placed a 40% tax on so-called "Cadillac Health Insurance Plans" eben though they are part and parcel of a productive workers compensation package.

You are against people working, since the unemployment rate has doubled since the Bush Administration.

Obonehead, I am one less vote you'll ever have and I am sure that all of those "Obama-numbot Zombies" wont be there for you in Nov. 2010 or 2012.

What I like best about our founding document is that it basically says:

We have every right to change our government. We don't think people should do this frivolously or without cause. Here's all the bad things that have happened. We're done with that, and we declare our independence.


What is a shame is that these days people are so less educated, and can't specifically declare -- in clear terms -- what their beef is. They throw around the word freedom and declare them oppressed because their candidate lost an election.

The founding fathers would be turning in their graves if they knew their serious (and life-threatening) declarations and actions were being used to justify petty biases and hollow complaints.

Is anybody burning down your town? I didn't think so.

Forcing you to house foreign troops. I didn't think so.

Maybe those who wish for a new revolution should first declare freedom from ignorance and read a history book once in a while. Free your mind and the rest will follow.

May I remind people that the woman being considered for a lifetime appointment for the SCOTUS doesn't actually believe in natural law, as she stated under questioning. She stated that she would rule according to the constitution, which isn't incorrect, but not on what is called 'natural law'. However, our founding document specifically states, and we the people believe, that we are "endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights"...I guess she doesn't think so. I guess she believes that people have a right to a free lunch or an abortion...but not to the rights attributed to natural law, such as life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness...sad day for our country. This woman has no place on the supreme court or even being nominated for the supreme court...the founders are rolling in their graves...

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed The Declaration of Independence?

Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War. They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.

What kind of men were they?

Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated, but they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.

Thomas McKean was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family
was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.

Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.

At the battle of Yorktown , Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.

Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.

John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished.

So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and silently thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for the price they paid.

Remember: freedom is never free!

Every American should read The Declaration of Independence at least once every year to remind himself just how far off track our federal government has taken our nation in 235 years, and to understand how much must change before we the people are again free from governmental tyranny.

Shocking fact....this Very Small article of Independence has not been read by 99% of our PUBLIC SCHOOL students..I watch what my children are taught inthier classrooms ..the teachere says time is too chort for that...They learn more about Race and immigration problems and nothing about OUR COUNTRY... Due to the economy I am unable to send my children to a BETTER school...so instead I Do The Teaching myself.. of curse my "students" are looked upon as "crazy" if they mention things they have learnt..but once they say they read it in a certain book or article..at least their fellow students are intersted. There seems to be a LOT of Education Time to omit things...like reading and math... Thank you for posting the Declaration.

In light of our current government polices, it's fascinating to read the middle section, which is an extensive list of grievances against England and King George.

No wonder the colonists were willing to fight for their freedom and that of future generations.

"He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance."

Sound familiar?

Wonders never cease, I never thought that I would see the day when your newspaper would publish the Declaration of Independence. Perhaps if you did things like this more often, gave an accurate account of what the conservatives believe you readership would be up instead of declining. All we ask is a seat at the table. We have a President and Congress that is hell bent on spending us into total Oblivion and you do not call them on it. The health bill is a joke and wait till the middle class get nailed in taxes next year when the tax cuts are allowed to expire. My advice is simple when you want to blame, look into the mirror, you voted for them. The last verse of the National Anthem causes me to think. Are we really freemen or does our government seem to govern more of our lives? It is a war between our homes and the opposition, a government that seems to be burdening us with taxes, and more taxes around the corner. A government that is forcing us to participate health care or we will have to pay fines. A government that acts as if it wants to grab more control over our lives everyday. About all we can to is trust in God that we will be delivered from the mess we find ourselves in. That someday we will have more freedom. Lyrics for the last verse of the National Anthem below:

We now live in the Stalin-Obama USSA. This is far far worse and more oppressive than ANYTHING King George III of England did to the American Colonies.

This country is turning into a bloody NIGHTMARE, and frankly King George the 3rd was LESS OPPRESSIVE than these COMMUNIST RAT VERMIN TRAITORS IN CHARGE TODAY!

We the people, the citizens, the taxpayers that make this all possible, we the free people with our NATURAL RIGHTS that come from a HIGHER POWER and no Government need to cast the tyrannical authoritarian police state off and end this nightmare regime and end the careers and the freedom of the rat vemrin traitor scum in Washington.

If the Military was full of patriots they would have acted against the Obama regime as it is a domestic threat and a clear and present danger to freedom, liberty and our constitutional republic. The military is full of brainwashed automatons that will herd us into concentration camps like they did in Germany. We will suffer under Baby-Stalin-Obama's nightmare Orwellian police state if we don’t end this soon.

REMEMBER IN NOVEMBER, either you get rid of these communists at the voting booth or with force.

What we need from Republicans are those "Special Olympics" moments that President Barack Obama, the condescending elitist, is famous for. Remember his bowling is like "Special Olympics or something".
