Sarah Palin vs. Barack Obama: The approval gap silently shrinks to a few points
Not that it matters politically because obviously she's a female Republican dunce and he's obviously a male Democratic genius.
But Sarah Palin's poll numbers are strengthening.
And President Obama's are sliding.
Guess what? They're about to meet in the 40s.
Depending, of course, on which recent set of numbers you peruse and how the questions are phrased on approval or favorable, 307 days into his allotted 1,461 the 44th president's approval rating among Americans has slid to 49% or 48%, showing no popularity bounce from his many happy trips, foreign and domestic.
Riding the wave of immense publicity and symbiotic media interest over her new book, "Going Rogue," and the accompanying promotional tour, Palin's favorable ratings are now at 43%, according to ABC. That's up from 40% in July.
One poll even gives her a 47% favorable.
Most recent media attention has focused on the 60% who say she's unqualified to become president. Her unfavorable rating is 52%, down from 53%, which still doesn't ignite a lot of optimism for Palin-lovers.
On the other hand, 35 months before the 2008 election, that Illinois senator was such a nobody that no one even thought to ask such a question about him. Things seem to change much more quickly these days.
Saturday night Palin's book bus swung by a mall in Roanoke, Va., a state Obama won a year ago but just recently elected a Republican governor to replace departing Tim Kaine, the chairman of the Democratic National Committee. The former Alaska governor wanted to greet the hundreds of fans already lining up in 39-degree weather for her Sunday morning signing.
"She brings out a different crowd, " Salem Republican Party Chairman Greg Habeeb told the Roanoke Times. Habeeb was struck by the numerous non-Republicans he spotted in the line snaking all over the mall. "She taps into something that the Republican Party really needs to tap into."
Sunday, Palin flew ahead of her bus to visit the Rev. Billy Graham and his son Franklin at the father's North Carolina home before her appearance today at Fort Bragg.
Overall, Palin's, well, campaign will visit 25 states, most of them politically crucial. Florida gets the most stops, three.
Everybody thinks 2012 when they think of Palin, who last week pushed Oprah's show to....
If she somehow mobilized Iowa's white evangelicals as Mike Huckabee did to win the 2008 season-opening caucus, many bets would be off about her unelectability. Right now, Palin holds 65% approval among white evangelical Protestants, not a bad place to start, if she decides to.
Anyway, Palin says 2012's not on her radar. Which is a good idea. The year 2010 is much more important for both of these political personalities.
No longer holding any office and personally set financially by the book's runaway success, Palin can devote her SarahPac and the entire year to collecting chits from local Republicans.
As Mitt Romney has already been quietly doing. Other Republicans will no doubt nominate themselves to join along the way, especially if Obama looks vulnerable after November 2010.
Although presidential incumbency has hardly kept Obama chained to the Oval Office, he and Joe Biden now own the U.S. economy, where their much-vaunted $787 billion economic stimulus package has so far stimulated unemployment to grow from 8% to more than 10%.
And then there's the growing deficit dread and the mounting costs -- human and financial -- in the increasingly unpopular Afghan conflict, where Obama is about to commit more U.S. troops at the end of the eighth and worst casualty year of the war.
We'll all hear much next year about how jobs are the last thing to improve in a sour economy, even in congressional districts that don't actually exist. Which is too bad for Democrats because jobs are the obvious first measure the public uses to measure the economy.
Historically, the White House party loses about 17 House seats in a normal midterm election cycle. That wouldn't change control of the House.
George W. Bush's GOP actually gained seats in 2002. Democrat Bill Clinton's first midterm election was a political Katrina, producing the Contract with America and so-called Republican revolution that saw the GOP take control of both houses of Congress after years of minority status.
Much of that turnaround was attributed to Clinton having run in 1992 as a centrist and then immediately pushed a more liberal agenda involving something called healthcare reform.
But that couldn't possibly happen again because of the popularity of Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi whose current favorable poll ratings are -- let's see here -- OMG, only about half of Palin's.

Palin a "dunce"?
She governed the state of Alaska FAR more competently than the "genius" Obama is attempting to govern the US. Keep up that attitude and you will lose your last five readers.
I personally would feel far more comfortable with a principled, honest "dunce" at the helm than with the hypocrisy, deceit and incompetence we have witnessed from Washington over the last year.

Sir, you are obviously skewed on what facts are. By your own admission, you claim Barack Obama is a "male democrat genius". If he is so smart sir then why can't he rally enough support to tackle the "most" pressing issues of a generation. i.e health care, and Cap and Tax? And if he is light years ahead in education why won't he listen to any opposition of anything having to do with climate, or economics. It is only genius that blaming Bush works so well with the drive-by-media.

It is impossible not to be in awe of the ability of the Obama-loons to perpetually be in a state of denial concerning the massive failures of the BoyBand in Chief. With nary a thought to reality, they reflexively blame Bush for every ill that is besetting the U.S. and the world, while exculpating Obama's pathetic policies as well as the Dems actions during Bush's terms. Obama came into office knowing full well the challenges he faced, Bush did not have that luxury. Bush inherited a minor recession, which he quickly corrected with tax cuts for all. Bush also inherited a massive Wall Street corporate scandal that had been festering for several years under the DressStainer in Chief's watch. Bush also inherited an Al Qaeda organization, again ignored under Clinton, that was ready and capable of doing great damage to this country. Bush inherited recalcitrant thug regimes in N. Korea, Iran and Iraq; the former two which were busy working on becoming nuclear powers. And finally, Bush not only had to deal with all those inherited problesms but also an opposition party, aided by the Industrial Media-Entertainment complex, hell bent on destroying him and making sure his policies failed; even if that meant America was hurt also.

Nice article. Obama was popular until he actually started putting his policy into motion. The same would be true for Sarah Palin, if she gets that chance.

Gee, Andrew, I hope you're proud of the average IQ of your "readers".
Isn't it humiliating to realize that the people you pander to, as a right-wing hack, are so apPALINgly ignorant that they can't even detect (or comprehend? or both?) your low-brow sarcasm?
McCain had that look he'd give these freaks on the campaign trail: "it's not worth it."

The silent majority in America has awakened. And it's a giant of such size and depth that it is going to crush Obama, and the Democrats soon. Not ACORN, not George Soros' fortune, or Hollywood will make a difference. And this "dunce", who has accomplished more than this author ever will, will be President. So, as California slides farther down the toilet, and as the country erodes.... this author will be bragging about how great Obama is, and how intelligent California Liberals are. Wake up Alice, Wonderland is just a dream!

I've read blogs from teenagers that were more insightful than this particular offering. At least Andrew Malcolm makes it clear from the get-go that he's a hateful liberal shill and Obama sycophant.
At least, no sane person would take him seriously after his first sentence.

The LA Times reminds me of Pravda in the late 80s defending a politically dying Marxist leader. It is amazing how liberals can be so full of hate for a woman and America and so in love with the most corrupt, anti-American hateful man ever to disgrace the White House. Obama is a total joke and intentionally destroying the economy (of finishing the job started by Shumer, Dodd and Franks). Period. The Stretchers (look at the marks around your mouths liberals) can try to prop this moron puppet up, but America will survive this idiot, the worst president ever. I love it!

It's funny that when W's poll numbers were low, we were told they didn't matter.
Now they count.
Posted by: Hugh Parker | November 23, 2009 at 06:56 PM
I am not saying that the media is biased or sexist, but the first sentence here is, "Not that it matters politically because obviously she's [Palin] a female Republican dunce and he's [Obama] obviously a male Democrat genius. Then the writer goes into how Palin isn't qualified to be President and implies that Obama is. Let's see Palin was a Chief Executive as a city Mayor and state Governor. Prior to being President, Obama served less than one term as US Senator and served briefly in a state legislature. Plain has common sense and Obama is a looney liberal who is spending us into the poor house. The only thing Obama has going for him is his dramatic BS speeches where he's for all things good and against all things bad. Before the election his supporters thought he was going to pay for their gas and housing.
Posted by: Kenny1811 | November 23, 2009 at 07:12 PM
Wait a minute. Are you saying the writer of this story was serious when stating "Not that it matters politically because obviously she's a female Republican dunce and he's obviously a male Democrat genius."
I thought that was an attempt at humor.
I must be watching video of a different Barack Obama, because he certainly doesn't seem like a genius to me.
Posted by: User1 | November 23, 2009 at 07:16 PM
All of America's problems are not the result of Republican policies. The economic downturn has been global. Things are going very well in Iraq and the enemy is on the run in Afghanistan. Things would be better if we sent more troops. Many in the world might not like Bush and may like Obama. But they respect Bush and don't respect Obama. Obama promised that if elected we would all be living in the Garden of Eden with his dramatic speeches. Now it's time to stop blaming, start leading and deliver President Obama. You said you would do it now deliver and stop scapegoating. If you aren't the one to solve America's problems don't seek re-election. Palin is a leader. You don't need to hold elected office to be persuasive and have a following.

"Not that it matters politically because obviously she's a female Republican dunce and he's obviously a male Democrat genius."
Unsubstantiated liberal lies published by snobby elitist newspapers in a bankrupt state is exactly WHY Sarah Palin is gaining in popularity.
"Obviously" the LA Times wouldn't know a political genius if one bit it in the rear end. What's so pathetic is that the "female Republican dunce" has had more success as an executive than the "male Democrat genius".
Note to all liberal nit wits --- raising taxes, increasing regulation, politicizing the Federal Reserve Bank and going on an apologia tour overseas is NOT the way to run a country. Mr. Obama's bows and apologies have earned him no friends and ZERO credibility. Just ask those of us who had clean up Carter's mess. Except this will be worse.
Note to Ms. Sienna Reid --- if you want to hear "fascist like" hatred spewing out of a mouth - read your own post out loud. Hypocrite. Liberals are the most intolerant bunch of people I've ever met.
Posted by: David Pineault | November 23, 2009 at 07:32 PM
I'm sorry but in no way is Sarah Palin a "dunce." If she truly was, she wouldn't be gaining momentum as the days go on. If anyone is stupid or slow to learn, it's Obama himself. He needs to admit that he doesn't have all the answers...especially on health care. By the way, last time I checked, the economy is in no better shape then when Bush left. And too much time has passed to still blame it on Bush. Pelosi and Reed aren't the brightest cookies in the box either!
By the way, the liberal media constantly bashing on Palin needs to stop. It's just plain pathetic.
Posted by: Christine | November 23, 2009 at 07:36 PM
We would be better off with the Republican dunce that thinks like Ronald Reagen then with the Democrat genius that thinks and acts like Jimmie Carter.
Posted by: caseclosed | November 23, 2009 at 07:38 PM
How would we know if Obama is a genius? Can we examine his college thesis or view his grades from Columbia or Harvard, or are we just to judge by his incredible legislative record in the Senate?
Posted by: Zonn Nilligan | November 23, 2009 at 07:49 PM
@Sienna L Reid:
"I don't think that any one president has faced such dire responsibilities as a president of the United States as Barack Obama."
Either you are twelve years old with absolutely no knowledge of American history or you are delusional. Allow me to offer the following as evidence:
George Washington had to establish the office of president by example and create American foreign relations. A brand new country with no system of organization aside from that created by the Constitution, which was untested and brand new.
James Madison had an entire second war with Britain within 40 years to manage, on American soil.
Abraham Lincoln struggled to hold together a nation that had divided into two separate entities and was embroiled in a bloody civil war that cost millions of American lives, including Lincoln's own life.
Woodrow Wilson had the looming peril of World War I in his first term and commitment to it in his second, plus trying to negotiate a lasting peace.
FDR had the Great Depression and World War II, the first of which he botched but the second of which, along with Truman, he handled quite magnificently.
Truman had Korea.
JFK had Khrushchev and the Cuban Missile Crisis, and perhaps the highest tension of the Cold War.
LBJ had Vietnam, although he didn't exactly handle that so well.
Reagan had the Soviet Union to tackle, which he ultimately helped bring down along with the Berlin Wall. This after inheriting a horrid economy from Carter.
These are but a few examples that demonstrate that The Chosen One is not dealing with the direst of responsibilities a president has ever seen. This guy is an empty suit filling a real man's office and we will pay the price for it. He has yet to actually take responsibility for anything or act decisively with respect to our troops. Shame on him.

Obviously the author of this article is a nitwit. Sarah Palin has common sense and connects with the regular folks, hard working families that are the bread and butter of this great Country. Oops, did I say we are a great Country, because Obama the apologizer in chief who thinks America is an arrogant backwards does'nt think the good ole US of A is a great country. Somehow this fool Obama who can't think on his feet, but he's okay speaking what the teleprompter tells him to say, got into the White House. Can you say George Soros (another American hater drug pusher). Now Obama is using the White House for photo ops and lush parties and showering our money on shovel ready payoffs to non producers such as union bosses and radicals infriltrating the education system to brainwash our future generations.

Obama is a genius? A guy who has led us into 10 to 17 percent and rising unemployment, who has generated trillions more debt in only one year(yet lectures us about trimming costs), who once thought there were 57 states, who gave the queen of England a CD of his speeches, and who, after 20 years of listening, was not smart enough to realize Jeremiah Wright was anti-American, anti-White, anti-Semitic?
I'll take a female "dunce" any day.
Posted by: RM Edaps | November 23, 2009 at 08:36 PM
Obama has always been a failure his whole life. He has not accomplished anything of any substance to date. He has always been a ward of the State, a product of Affirmative Action. It's so bizarre to see how stupid smart people are. I doubt seriously if Obama will make it through a full term after 2010 elections.

I love how you liberals lie to yourselves. Even after 911, Bush kept the country economically sound and unemployment never went over 5%! The best financial years I ever had were 2001 to Jan 2007, that's when the liberals took over congress and started spending us into hell. When Barney Frank took over Fannie Mae, the stock dropped 90% in 1.5 years and when Bush and McCain tried to reform the mortgage industry and brought the reform to congress, the liberals got it thrown out and said don't fix what's not broken. You people need to educated yourselves in history, before you open your mouths and sounds like a bunch of morons. Yes we had debt when Bush left but now, thanks to Obama, you can multiply it by 4!!!! He's the most incompetent person to ever hold office. Palin blows him away in experience and ran the MOST successful State in the U.S., with an 80% approval rating before she ran for VP. Wake up, or grow up....which ever comes first!
Posted by: Rick4343 | November 23, 2009 at 09:13 PM
What kind of perspective is this? Has Sarah Palin been running the OTHER Oval office that none in the country knows about?? Has she been tested with real policy making? Her numbers have nothing, absolutely nothing to do with Obama's numbers. Comparing them in an article like this is ABSOLUTELY irresponsible.
Posted by: Paul | November 23, 2009 at 09:27 PM
The numbers speak for themselves: ObaMao goin' down. Palin goin' up, up, up.....
November 2010 and 2012 cannot come soon enough.
Americans of all ages, colors and creeds are waking up to the fact that Democrats are unfit to run their own mouths, much less our country.... which they are presently running into the ground.
Posted by: Pitbullll | November 23, 2009 at 09:29 PM
This is nothing more then a routine popularity contest, its so easy to cast stones at others as they attempt to do their job, then the situation takes a drastic turn when you find yourself in that very position, the thankless receiving end.
Obama was supposed to be the savior with answers for everything, then reality set in and his inexperienced showed loud and clear.
Posted by: Maxwells | November 23, 2009 at 09:36 PM
I note your comment
Are you being sarcastic here? The 'male Democratic genius' so far has lied repeatedly, made a public snap judgement about the police doing their job without being fully informed, yet insists that we should not jump to conclusions regarding a Muslim terrorist attack on Fort Hood; while at the same time he cannot manage commit to winning a war by sending enough troops to do so. This 'genius' is unwilling to honor our country's past achievements to the world, he has a court date in January to 'prove' his legitimacy as president, he has surrounded himself with advisors who are anti-capitalists at the least, he cannot seem to grasp that most Americans are happy with their insurance, don't want to bankrupt our country by being forced into a health plan that as of today, only 38% approved of - oh no, this so-called 'genius' is the domestic enemy that our constitution mentions.
But, let's assume that you are correct, and Sarah Palin is a 'Republican dunce' - then by your own article, a dunce is matching Obama, and that was your point I take it. If Sarah Palin runs for office, I will vote for her because dunce or not, she has integrity, courage, tenacity in the face of incredibly rude, arrogant, childish name callers such as this newspaper article, she, unlike Obama, actually loves our country and is a patriot.
Think about it!
Posted by: Kelly | November 23, 2009 at 09:39 PM
Magdalena Mae:
"If anyone, truly believes that a person such as Sarah Palin, who is so caught up in her hopes of, I believe, becoming president, has any chance at all is sadly mistaken."
This can only be measured after the fact.
Liberals exude the inability to think logically.

She would be the only one running. You can bet she would have given a big fat no to Pelosis private jet. Dems are the horror of this nation. Kick them out in 2010 or we are finished as a respected power, Final words. Get rid of the unions.

Posted by: Pat B | November 23, 2009 at 09:54 PM
So much for any attempt at objectivity! The LA Times is a joke, just like the man they call a genius. What has he done other than enslave the next generation with a mountain of debt because he lacks the courage to make a single tough decision. There is not a single program he has the guts to cut. All he knows how to do is raise taxes on the productive, hard-working citizens in order to give hand outs to those who have never worked a day in their lives, or who came into this country illlegally. This country was built by conservatives, and after the Idiot-in-Chief (yes, I remember when you called Bush that, and frankly I agreed, so a little equal treatment here) is done tearing it down, we will rebuild it! Until then, why don't all you whining crybaby's go back to sucking on the public teat, and leave us alone to work so we can pay for everything!

I love what Gov. Sarah Palin stands for. She is a good role model for girls. The reason the Liberals hate her is because she has a brain and she is female. When are the women and black democrats in America going to wake up and realize just how oppressed they are in Liberal land.
They want abortion to be paid for because they figured it is better to kill a life than to support it, yet they protest the death penalty for murderers. Now who in society have the most children out of wedlock?
They say nothing about the Terrorist because they secretly want women to be oppressed and ignored in society, just like the Muslim faith teaches. The lawyer for one of the terrorist was making the rounds on the news shows today telling everyone how he plans to use our court system to exploit America and give these radical muslim nuts a public forum.
They want black people to be dependent on them, so they can continue to vote for them and take the incentive to get an education out of their heads. Once educated, most people figure out how useless this party is and that their only agenda is to tax and spend. Buy more votes by "taking care of" people who are unemployed and uneducated.
Maybe now, America sees them for what they really are. They will do what they want with OUR money and ignore our voice and this healthcare bill is just the beginning. They prosecute 5 Terrorist in Federal courts here in America for killing 3000 people. The other 5 who will be tried in Military courts only bombed objects and not people. Those people in the Military courts will be put to death for blowing up objects and the ones who killed Americans will get a public forum and a chance that they will get off and go free. Then what you dumb Liberals!!!

I think it is sad that someone would think that Obama has had it worse than any other president before him. You need to crack a history book and read about what was going on when Abraham Lincoln was sworn in, not to mention FDR's years in office. And to be ignorant enough to think that it was the Bush administration and republican policies that got us into this economic crisis. You need to read something besides Rolling Stone and watching CBS to get your news.
I will say Obama has faced one issue that no other president before him has endured - winning a Nobel prize for doing absolutely nothing. Poor guy.

BO a "genius"? Yeah, like pigs fly and you're high, right?
BO is a classic case of an egotistical, self-deceived "wannabe" president with no qualifications for president (unless of course you think being a mere "community-organizer, a la Acorn, makes you fit for high office).
He's done more damage in nine months than Bill Clinton did in eight years.
Ruined: The state of our economy, the health care "discussion", the ability to work with our military in Iraq and Afghanistan, the ability to "reach out" to the other side of the aisle, all that talk about hope and change, true tax reform, and the list goes on and on.
BO has put a black mark on the White House. No pun intended.

This column is an excellent example of why sarcasm is difficult to pull off when writing - without the benefit of vocal and facial expression too many people miss the joke (meaning) and instead take the words literally.
Obviously Mr. Malcolm means just about the exact opposite of what his words say. I am a huge Sarah Palin fan and supporter (donated to her PAC, something I have never done with any politician) and extremely sensitive to the overwhelming left wing media bias, but when I read this my reaction was "Wow, even someone writing for the LA Times can see that Sarah Palin's appeal is very broad based, genuine and probably lasting." I read this column as very pro Palin.
What Mr. Malcolm is saying is that there are solid signs it is possible, indeed even likely, come 2013 we will look back and see that the current "establishment" view of Obama and Palin was in reality completely wrong, the obvious truth then will be that the male Democrat Obama was the dunce, the female Republican Palin the genius.
Enjoyed this column Mr. Malcolm, too bad so many completely missed its essence.

Palin for president? Hopefully not, but we'll muddle through. Obama for re-election? Certainly not, we might be able to muddle through with his four years of incompetence and asinine liberal ideas, but eight years? That would be worse than Bush 2...
Both of the major parties are like moldy bread. Crusty, unappealing, possible best end use is duck or geese excrement and if we're lucky, the mold might be manufactured into penicillin...you know, something useful to use after being screwed without protection for so long.
Stop unfunded mandates. Stop the abusurd taxing to pay for special interests. For once, protect our sovereignty and borders and boot the illegals out.
Palin or the spineless crook Obama take care of the important stuff? Not at all.

I remember these same critics hated Ronald Reagan at least as much as they hate Sarah Palin. When Reagan fired the air traffic contollers, they said planes would crash. Didn't happen. They said Reagan would start WW3. He ended the cold war. They said when he bombed Khadafi, terrorism would get really bad. Wrong again, for a little while. They called him a dunce. Sarah is in good company Go girl. Let the liberals keep stamping their little feet around.

The dirty little secret is that the Dems are very much afraid of her. She is a woman who speaks from the heart. She is an outsider who would bring realism to Washington. It amazes me when I listen to the liberal talk shows, and the focus on Palin for most of their shows every day. All the while say she is an idiot and has no chance to get elected. They are in for a suprise...
