A Newt Gingrich run in 2012? Quite possible but...

No one in their right mind announces or confirms a White House run this far out.

Yes, presidential campaign announcement dates have been creeping up. In 1960, John F. Kennedy announced on Jan. 3 of election year. Bill Clinton announced the fall before election year. George W. Bush announced the summer before election year.

And Barack Obama the winter before the summer before the fall before election year. And that successful run cost $750 million in other people's money.

Why ask to be politically targeted this soon?  It's -- what? -- 1,107 days now until Nov. 6, 2012.

So C-SPAN's Mr. Excitement, Steve Scully, knew better Sunday than to ask former House Speaker Newt Gingrich whether he was going to run in the next presidential contest.

Savvy fellow that he is, Scully inquired instead what kinds of things Gingrich would think about as he contemplated that decision. (See C-SPAN video below.)

Gingrich, who engineered the stunning 1994 Republican election victories in....

... both houses of Congress with the Contract with America before quitting after some defeats four years later, walked through the thinking process.

Callista and I are going to think about this in February 2011. And we are going to reach out to all of our friends around the country. And we'll decide, if there's a requirement as citizens that we run, I suspect we probably will. And if there's not a requirement, if other people have filled the vaccum, I suspect we won't.

Gingrich ran through a lengthy list of other possible Republican suspects, praising Mitt Romney and Haley Barbour and Tim Pawlenty and whats-her-name with the new book and the Nov. 16 appointment with Oprah. Gingrich said, "I have no great personal ambition needs to run for president."

Although, to be honest, he's not exactly hiding himself either, analyzing for Fox News, writing books, gathering nearly 1.14 million followers on Twitter (only 387,000 behind John McCain), giving speeches all over and rising early on an autumn Sunday to answer questions on C-SPAN from even the Democratic and Independent phone lines.

Gingrich also harkened back to the '94 Contract, saying politics needs to be about ideas -- he called them "vivid, powerful alternatives" -- not just maneuvers. "I want to see an alternate Republican Party," Gingrich said, "not an opposition Republican Party."

Newt won't run in 2012 and wouldn't get any support anyway. Incredibly, Newt just backed the *wrong candidate* in the upper New York house race. He will pay dearly for that mistake if he even thinks about running. Conservatives will no longer vote for RINO's.

More like a limp than a run

Newt could not deliver while majority leader in Congress. Oh,yeah,he had a great photo op with all the so-called Republicans. Wasn't that cute, all those people with the little book.So what!? He could not control the new Reps and get serious business done for the betterment of the United States, what makes anyone believe he can deliver as President?
I would rather put my money and effort into Bobby Jindal.

I liked Newt in the '90s. I've even bought a few of his books, but ever since he got rolled by Clinton and the press over the gov't shutdown I've lost any enthusiasm I had for the guy. He wants to come off as a pragmatic conservative. I think it's a little too late for that type of stand. We currently face the loss of America as we know it and he just seems to be out of touch. I think it must be something in that DC water that gets to people. Every time I see Newt I think of him on the couch with that worthless Pelosi character. You can't compromise with evil and at the same time be respected.

Dear Newt Gingrich:
So you've decided that you can step into McCaine's roll of "I'm a Republican that does the MSM's bidding". Well good for you; it's always great to see the political whores run for public office--especially those men who can't even be faithful to their spouses--much less the American people.
So thanks, but no thanks. I won't vote for Obama, of course, so I guess I'll just writre in Sarah Paqlin--again.

Newt Gingrich in 2012...DOA

I was a liberal democrat when Speaker Gengrich was the force that rallied the Republicans so many years ago. I hated him then, but I've come to love him. Yes, there is a ugly issue about his previous wife, the cancer, the affair, yadda yadda. Otherwise, he's a brilliant speaker, a superb political analyst, one of the most effective and brilliant politicians around. He is also a true conservative more than a Republican, and most importantly, can articulate those values in a way that I think will not alienate people.

Oh, to see a Gengrich/Huckabee ticket.

At this point I think Bozo the Clown would do a better job than Obama.

Regardless of which party you prefer, you've got to admit this dude's a fiddle farter.

Yes just what we need another RINO. Gingrich is a fraud.

Newt busted his britches when he said some unkind things about Rush Limbaugh. I don't even pay attention to him any more. Also, just recently, he has come out in support of a RINO in New York, and against the conservative candidate. I have no need for Newt.

No way am I voting for this RINO who supports another RINO in upstate NY. Earth to GOP! We are sick of your moderates.

Great, another old neo con skeleton coming out of the closet to lie to and cheat us further. Newt Gingrich has never accomplished anything to make the American people freer or more prosperous. Just please go away Newt and leave some room for a real paleo conservative to get a word in edgewise

Your kind of RINO is why I am not longer a Republican

I am 68, remain a registered Republican (although thoroughly disgusted with the whole bunch), and will tell you that Newt is part of the Republican party's problem. The party needs new blood, not retreads like Newt. While I enjoy hearing Newt analyze politics and agree with many of his professed stances, I see him as a political dinosaur, essentially unelectable.

Newt Gingrich speaks ideas & principles of limited government and free market solutions to serious problems. When Republicans departed from these principles, they reaped the whirlwind. And were spanked badly, as they deserved. Gingrich is an experienced, principled person who could bring a true choice. Hope he runs.

Got news for dummy, old whats her name is the best candidate the republican party can come up with. Dump her and most of your base will dump you. Get it? We are tired of the disrespect paid to her by not just the democrats, but the "men" in the republican party who can't stand that she is the unquestionable leader of the republican party at this time....Period. Sara Palin, she is the only one of the lot not bought and paid for by some big dollar interest.
Rusty

Please Mr. Gringrich...stop TEASING US!!!!

Is it just me, or does Newt just dish out the same nonsense each and every election cycle? It's always, "...well, I'd love to run for President...but only if enough people beg me to...and when they do, only then will I actually open myself up to the kinds of attacks I'm so good a serving up. You know, the kind of attacks that one who isn't in office, or running for anything, can launch because said attacks don't have any real world consequences....oh, on second thought, I'm not going to run, because I really like being a political pundit who can just throw out any old half-baked idea with just enough bombast to make one think I know what I'm doing..."

NO on NEWT !!! He is a POLITICIAN, who checks to see where the wind is blowing. He believes in Global Climate Change. The fact that he is a career Washington politician and is wrong on climate change should be enough to exclude him. ENough is Enough of course one day of Obama## was too much !!!

Conservatives will destroy this man's political career oonce and for all.He is an unprincipled political hack who would gladly trow conservatives under the bus if he thought it would bring him power.

i feel newt would make a wonderful president... he is smart and knows washington and foreign policy... newt was instrumental in balancing the budget under clinton.... i hope he runs he sure has my vote... i also think mitt romney would make a great vice president

Normally, I would say, "Fantastic," to Newt running for president. I may change my mind though depending on who is running as a Conservative against him. Newt is a Republican, not a Conservative. This is evident in the New York congressional special election in which there is a Democrat, Republican, and a Conservative Republican running. Newt is backing the liberal Republican for some reason. This makes me question his judgement.

Mr Gingrich is not what the Republican party or the people of the United States need. He has the charisma of a sick goat. His personality displays a condescending, yet confused concept of the American voter and the American intellect. An overweight snob. HIs writing is that of a political science professor, Most important, is his actions as House Speaker; his distain of the freshman class of Republican congresspersons in '95, pushing each one out of their populist roots into some kind of Georgia political science lie.

God I hope not. As a libertarian-conservative I hope ofr a purge the big-government conservatives like Gingrich as much as I hope for the socialists like Obama. Gingrich just wants to blow a wad of our cash on Technology instead of Health Care. He's as bad as any technocrat, thinking that he knows how to plan our economy better than the emergent phenomena of the market. Enough already...let the freedom of the many individual choices that market participants make determine the course of our prosperity. The evil overlords of planning have had their chance.

I can no longer support Gingrich due to his support of the GOP candidate (a RINO) in the New York congressial race. His comment that he could only support the local GOP is the reason the GOP is in trouble; he should be supporting the individual who supports conservative values even if it is an Independent. I was actually shocked by his commnet.

NO NO NO NO RINO NEWT!!!!Worst mistake senario!

If the GOP thinks Newt Gingrich is the future then we are in a whole lot of trouble as a party! The guy cheated on his wife while attacking Bill Clinton of doing the same thing! We need and should demand that honest people run for the highest office of the land! Newt do us a favor and DON'T RUN just RUN AWAY!

Ron Paul 2012

This would guaruntee a second term for Obama. Newt do us a favor and go away...

The widespread belief is that Newt quit because of a scandal that has never been resolved in his favor. He is a great historical writer and has some outstanding audiobooks, but he is not an assertive charismatic public speaker. The Republicans need someone who says, "This is the way America need to go, follow me." Not someone who makes intellectual points and asks good questions.

Newt Gingrich has too much personal baggage. This from a registered Republican. Further, everything he does since leaving the Government is to promote himself. How many more books is he going to write or co-write? My party picked McCain and Gingrich would be another disaster! I would definitely leave the party then. Am sick of "politicians."
By the way, I am also very unhappy with our current government. I had hoped for some change but what a disaster we got instead. They are practicing on the job training at our expense. We are bordering on a communist nation, just look what was done with Chrysler. The Union getting more than 60% for nothing and investors losing their money? I am driving my third Jeep Grand Cherokee but will not buy another one because of this injustice. How many people lost their jobes when they closed so many dealerships? I now would have to drive more than an hour to a dealership. These people never had to earm money before they can spend it. What they are too ignorant to realize is that someone has to pay taxes to the Government for it to exist.

Sorry to say Newt doesn't stand a chance. With the endorsement of Scozzafava in NY, Newt has shown that he is a RINO (Republican in name only). Newt is old guard and has help water down the Conservative message. Maybe he could run successfully as a Democrat.

I had a lot more respect for Newt before he came out recently backing the Republican candidate in the New York congressional race. She is running against a true conservative, with true conservative values. She is supported by ACORN and is pro choice. I am very dissapointed in Newt.

Newt can run all he wants, but he won't get a vote from this conservative. He has endorsed a woman, last name of Scozzafava, who has been endorsed by ACORN, is pro-choice and has voted for higher taxes in the past. She may be conservative on a few things, but she sounds like a RINO to me. I will no longer hold my nose to vote for anyone just because they have a D or an R after their name. If they don't talk the conservative talk and walk the conservative walk they are off my list.
By the way, L.A.Times are you so afraid of Sarah Palin's power you will not even mention her name in a story? Wow, does she have power over you. "What's her name with the new book." You are complete idiots.

Newt Gingrich is a RINO - most "idea" people are liberals. Please do not say he is a conservative - any idiot that proclaims his personal belief in Global Warming and makes a commercial with Nancy Pelosi testifying to the fact is RINO. You cannot trust him with your wife or girl friend much less elected office again. OBTW I am not a Democrat and only vote Republican when they are really have a history of being a conservative. Newt is another John McCain with a big bold "L" tattooed on is forehead. He is all about $ and has no core values.

LAT would love him - he's another mcpain - he sucks up to global arming fraud, he supports rinos who the electotorate can then ignore and vote for the real leftist.

Newt, the reach-around guy for 2012.

Sorry, but he blew it in NY-23 supporting Dede.

As a conservative, I will not vote for 33rd degree Freemason, Romanist, RINO Newt. If the GOP didn't learn that conservatives won't support liberals with an R near their names like Mitt, Rudy of John, and run another RINO named "Newt" it will be another 4 years of the long legged mack daddy Marxist usurper Barry Soetoro in the White House.

Newt 9x out of 10 has great ideas and he is one of the few politicians that really thinks things through, which makes it all the more surprising a few years ago that he came out in support of the global warming clowns. Never though I'd see Gingrich and Gore on the same page. Oh well, nobody's perfect; I haven't seen him speaking about the dangers of global warming anytime recently. I think he has come back to sanity. Gingrich is absolutely right in that whom ever is going to lead the GOP and this contry is going to be a person that has actual ideas not just hope & small change!

Please no, not Newt! I want a real conservative to run for president in 2012. He supports the Republican running for Congress in the 23rd District of New York, just because she is a Republican. She is a RHINO like no one before! And I cannot forget that he was pestering the Philander-In-Chief, President Clinton, while he was himself cheating on his wife with the "young" lady, now his 3rd wife. He is all talk and no walk. I want a proven manager with charisma, character, and the ability to verbalize the conservative values that will undo the fiscal damage, at least, that President Obama will have done to our economy. I want a commander-in-chief who will respond to his generals' recommendations. And whether society's mores are salvageable or not, I just want him or her to lead by example rather than enforcing morality as the progressive liberals do. Maybe John Kasich or Condolesa Rice, but not Newt for God's sake or ours.

I hope he doesn't run....we just got beat last election running an old man with white hair.

Newt Gingrich is the most qualified and clearly the brightest of all presidential prospects. Unfortunately, the news media will crucify him. To the mainstream media, he is "red meat!" The voters of this republic just aren't smart enough to elect Newt.

Gingrich doesn't have a prayer because he doesn't get it. We arent looking for a conservative, we are looking for a constitutionalist and he isnt it. Neither party gets it. How can they be so stupid?

Never thought I'd say it. Newt is too liberal for me now!

Lets see.. Gingrich endorsed Dede Scozzafava (RINO) and Palin bucked the GOP by endorsing Doug Hoffman an Independent... humm.. nope, don't want him.

brillant! the man is a great American Nute '12

How can Newt lead the Rep party when he defers to the RNC for NY political endorsements. Leaders lead not defer.

He is another RINO

After hearing Newt speak regarding the Hoffman issue, he would be the last person I would vote for. In fact I am seriously considering turning in my RNC card and registering as Independent.

Well.... we need fresh good conservative blood to guide the country, Mr. Gingrich although having been there before has always been exactly that, as a register and real Republican I would vote for him 6 times during the week and twice on sunday.
Dario Zuniga M.D.

Guess you didn't get the White House Memo.

Obama will name himself the canidate on both the Democrat & Republican ticket for 2012.
Also he will declare himself:
SantaObama, Santa Claus will no longer be needed.
New Years eve will now be called Obamaeve.
He will declare himself the Winner of the Daytona 500
Valentines day will become Michelleday.
He will replace the Easter Bunny.
Will jockey the winner at Churchill Downs, KY Derby.
Declare himself the winner of the Indy 500 in a smart car.
The 4th. of July will be eliminated.
His birthday will be declared a national holiday, to all except taxpayers who will still be required to work.
Labor Day will be changed to Comrade Obamaday.
Every child will be required to ware a Obama mask on Hollowween.
Thanksgiving will be changed to " Thankobamaday "
O almost forgot he will also win the Masters, PGA Championship, The TPA Players Championship, but is extremely pissed he will not be declared the winner of the British open.

I'm a first time voter and if Newt ran I'd be so proud to give my first vote to him.

If anyone thinks that an ugly, fat, white guy who is a mediocre candidate, at best, has a chance against Robobama, they might as well fold it up. Please, no washed -up, recycle from the 90's! Nice try, L.A. Times and the rest of the phony media. No thanks, we'll choose our own this time. A real conservative is the only way.

Let's hope he doesn't run. He is another RINO. Anyone who endorses liberals and does commercials with Nancy Pelosi cannot be trusted.

Sarah Palin is the only hope conservatives have.
