Opinion: Nevada 2010: A father-son ticket--Harry Reid and Rory Reid

The storyline for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s 2010 reelection efforts has been well-established:
Lots of Nevadans don’t like Democrat Harry, but the GOP couldn’t convince its most-desired candidate to run against him. So Republicans are looking at a crowded primary that includes the son of a legendary college basketball coach who’s never won an election; a state senator who once proposed a huge tax increase and a former TV anchorwoman/casino owner/state GOP chairwoman.

Who said Nevada politics are strange?

But today someone shook up Reid’s race far more than any army of Republican challengers: Assembly Speaker Barbara Buckley, a Democrat.

Let us explain.

Harry’s son, Rory, is running for governor, even though a double-Reid ballot is widely viewed as a drag on both father and son. Buckley was considered to have a good shot of knocking off Rory Reid in the Democratic primary.

Only, wait! Now, Buckley has announced that she’s not running.

Save a credible candidate diving into the race, Rory Reid has a virtual lock on the Democratic nomination – meaning that in 2010, two Reids could share a ballot, campaign stops and a barrage of nasty attacks.

Our guess: Don’t expect either Reid to promote this as “buy one, get one free.”
