Opinion: Sotomayor hearings: Specter dissatisfied with judge’s answers

Sen. Arlen Specter appeared a bit frustrated at times, trying to coax more specifics from Sonia Sotomayor in her confirmation hearing. Again and again, she declined to venture thoughts on issues she might face in the future on the high court.

Undeterred, the (now) Pennsylvania Democrat pressed her, often cutting her off when an answer seemed insufficient.

But then he told her, with a bit of a smile: “I think your record is exemplary. Not your answers, but your record is exemplary.”

He praised her again and promised to judge her more on her record than her answers.
