Sotomayor hearings: In praise of Derek Jeter
Before yielding the floor, Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar had one last question for Sonia Sotomayor.
“Did you have a chance to watch the All-Star game?” she asked. The senator was referring to Major League Baseball’s 80th All-Star game, which unfolded Wednesday night in St. Louis, with the American League winning 4-3.
“I haven’t seen television in a very long time,” Sotomayor began, “but I admit I turned it on for a minute.”
Klobuchar congratulated Sotomayor, a devoted fan of the Yankees, on Derek Jeter’s game-winning score. But, Klobuchar said, “You must know that he scored only because there was a hit by the Minessota Twins’ Joe Mauer.”
Sotomayor grinned. “That’s teamwork,” she said.
When Patrick Leahy, the senator from Massachusetts-adjacent Vermont, resumed control of the hearing, he faked a frown.
“I’m resisting any Red Sox comments,” he said.
