Michelle Obama serves food to D.C. poor and homeless, but...

First Lady Michelle Obama serves food to homeless people at Miriam's Kitchen in Washington DC 3-5-09

First Lady Michelle Obama showed up Thursday as a surprise and welcome volunteer at Miriam's Kitchen, a soup kitchen for homeless poor people not far from the White House.

She brought with her some food donated by White House staff.

The first lady served up mushroom risotto and broccoli to a long line of homeless men and women during part of herFirst Lady Michelle Obama volunteers as a food server at Miriam's Kitchen a soup kitchen for poor homeless in Washington DC 3-5-09 lunch hour and in these photos poses for a picture by one homeless diner obviously excited to be in the first lady's presence.

Obama said she hoped her service would cause other Americans to volunteer to help the less fortunate in their own communities.

And, of course, such images of need might also help build support for her husband's economic and healthcare reform agenda, although a Miriam's spokeswoman said their average "guest" has been homeless since about the time Barack Obama was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2004.

Miriam's is a privately funded soup kitchen about seven blocks from the White House that has 1,200 volunteers and serves about 300, mainly men, each morning. Our colleague Mark Silva has more on the volunteer work in the Swamp here.

Both of these news photos were widely distributed across the country and even around the world.

It doesn't detract from the first lady's generous gesture or the real needs she seeks to highlight to ask two bothersome journalistic questions about these news photos:

If this unidentified meal recipient is too poor to buy his own food, how does he afford a cellphone?

And if he is homeless, where do they send the cellphone bills?

you can get a cell phone for free with a $19.99 a month plan , and many homeless shelters have addresses you can send your mail to

Ever heard of a prepaid mobile phone plan, jerk?

Oh, so now the media notices that this Administration nothing but a cheap sham propped up by a fawning, lap-dog media who does what it can to protect the public image of their president and his idiot wife.

Hooray for soup lines, homeless vagrants with cell phones and good time photo-ops with "the poor!" Boy, those Obamas just care so much, don't they? Maybe they can guide their daughters to homelessness if they think it's such a peachy-keen state of being.

I wonder if they got $100/lb beef and cocktails like in the White House. Let us know, LAT, mkay?

Hmmmm...let's see now!
A Homeless Man with a Cell Phone. Where/which Carrier offers "FREE" Cell Phone Service? Maybe if this guy didn't have a Cell Phone,he'd have a little more money in his pocket to buy his own food? Just another Obama Free Loader , I guess !

There is such a thing as a pre paid cell phone. you never get a bill.

It would be a smart thing for a homeless person to keep their pre-paid cell phone and spend the $20 it takes to buy minutes. One of the big problems with being homeless is not having a way to receive call backs from potential employers. (You can always say, "Hey, call me at the homeless shelter." How would that work out?)

Sad that you first reaction is to question whether or not someone is really in need. That type of attitude is going to really hurt us in these times-- we need to pull together.

Your showing your age. You can now buy pay as you go cell phones for under 20 bucks at a 7-11. Also, just because the person is homeless, doesn't mean that he is jobless. Or he could be recently jobless.

It's not just the traditional homeless we will find in this economic mess. Families, the low wage earners, the elderly that has lost all their savings, and young adults unable to find traditional entry work.

Having a cell phone may be an opportunity for a potential employer to contact this person. At minimum, its a way for family to stay in contact with him.

Does anyone else see anything interesting about this picture?

It seems odd with this "soup kitchen for homeless poor people" that the gentleman standing in line taking a picture of a possing First Lady seems to be doing well enough to have what appears to be a Blackberry Storm.

Not necessarily the photo that would represent the desired affect by this PR stunt. It is more indicative of the true nature of the smoke and mirrors approach of the White house toward these o'so tough times.

Thus spoke, Golgo Brone

A pay-as-you-go cellphone? I use them myself, and I pay a mortgage (yes, with my money, not yours).

er, Andrew?

1 - a cell phone is infinitely cheaper than housing.

2 - if you were homeless you would use a pre-paid cell phone, where you buy the minutes in advance.

I'm sure you don't mean to sound like a completely out-of-touch moneyed windbag, but - sorry - you just did. Perhaps the best thing a homeless person could have (other than food, shelter and work) would be a cell phone. Kind of hard to become employed and get some housing back around yourself these days if you can't answer the phone...

On the homeless and cellphone use. Not everybody uses contracts to purchase a cellphone. There's such a thing as simply buying minutes for a cheapo cellphone, or even an expensive cellphone. Cellphone are pretty inexpensive these days, even those with camera capability. Secondly, often the homeless need cellphones for personal security (call the police, fire, medical, etc.). Then, again, if they're looking for work or even working for day job companies, the cellphone provides the homeless with communication. Lastly, there are many homeless people who are regularly employed but can't afford housing on $4.50/hour. Yep, that's what many, many jobs in the U.S.A. pay. Not everybody can be a brain surgeon or a journalist, making a living wage.

Ever try to provide yourself with life's necessities on $4.50/hour? Think about it!

Well here are too pretty realistic answers.
1) he may have borrowed it from someone and just his luck had it on him at the time (Im not making a stretch here, I know a lot of people who do this because I actually know people who are in situations like this)

2) Even more likely is that he's using PREPAID WIRELESS. Its pretty common for people without stable financial or living situations to pick up a prepaid phone. You get the phone with no contract or payment obligation and when you have the money you put minutes on it. There arent any deals for it so they often make calls sparingly but its a nice way to stay in touch with family or friends or make emergency calls. If someone you care about is homeless its a pretty simple way to make sure they dont stay homeless and isolated.

I know some people who have been homeless at times. A lot of them are normal people in a bad situation who are still trying to maintain vestiges of modern society so that they can maintain bonds and eventually get back on their feet. The people I know have gotten back on their feet after some help from soup kitchens and shelters like these. They are now taxpaying citizens

To presume that a homeless man doesn't look homeless enough because he has a cell phone basically exemplifies the disconnect between the haves and the havenots.

My parents work a the emergency food pantry in their little town and ask the same questions (and more) about some of the people they see coming in there. So sad that personal responsibility is gone along with shame. We are a nation of mostly lazy, greedy Socialists.

Strangely enough, I have a friend who sleeps on the streets, has a cell phone, and has the bills sent to his probation officer.

I want to be fed by the Government.

I just hate work. That's why I voted for Michelle's Barack.

Thanks Michelle. Waiting for my new house from Prez. I saw it at CNN.

Much much thank you... How can I have some of those food? Please tell me where to enlist.

Silly me, Andrew, but as an alleged "journalist," isn't it your job to track down the man with the cell phone and get the answers to those questions yourself?

I think the ideal of Mrs Obama volunteering @ the soup kitchen added a nice touch to & what she is and represent. On the hand of the homeless with the cellphone, any number of things could be as he may have just lost his job & still have service. One should never jump to conclusion unless one has all details. so to the journalist that made the statement; SHAME ON YOU!!!

I see Michelle Malkins crowd is poking fun at the homeless as usual no class.

Many homeless people have jobs, but they cannot afford housing in DC. Many have families, past debt, etc. The cell phone could be a requirement for the job, or given by the job or a family member--who knows? I think you should withhold judgement here.

Maybe he's using his money from the stimulus?

Lots of people who can't afford cell phone bills keep the cell-phone themselves, partially as status symbols, partially to take photos like this one, and partially so once they can afford to pay for their phone bills, they'll be able to use them

You've obviously never heard of pre-paid cell phones. This is the method most often used by homeless that are serious about doing whatever work they can find. They have to have a way to be reached if some work does come up.
You can conceivably get a job without a place to live, but not without a phone.

Poor? Nice cameraphone buddy
Homeless? Where do they send the cellphone bill again?

PS: How can she stand there and smile while wearing a $30k ring?

Screw the cell phone ..

Mushroom Risotto is on the menu?

Mushroom Risotto?

Are you really that ignorant? You can buy a cell phone then buy phone cards to provide minutes on it. No phone bill needed. Are you saying poor people don't deserve communications devices? How is one supposed to even try to get a job without a phone number? So much stupid in one short post.

you just can't make this up. This guy has this cool cell phone and he's homeless. Only in America. Good God, what a picture to print.

You're too stupid to even try and correct this bs.

It's obvious you've never been poor. What you do is buy a cheap phone and buy phone cards -- you don't get a bill, you don't need an address or a credit card it's pay as you go. Cell phones done that way are cheaper than a land line.

what a dumb question about the cell phone! Have you ever heard of 'pay as you go? Many homeless people are living on disability or the poor amount that veterans might get - they can afford a phone but not rent! I guess the writer never experienced poverty and thinks that poor people should have absolutley nothing before we consider them poor or in need of help. Just like Barbara Bush's ridiculous statements after Katrina that the people in the astrodome were in a better situation then they were before their homes were destroyed.
Dumb article .

Just another photo op. Where is her teleprompter?

Those may seem like pressing journalistic questions (???), but the answer is exceedingly simple (and will probably never pass moderation as it's so embarrassing to the article author): pre-paid wireless phone. A pre-paid wireless phone is certainly a lot less expensive than recurring rent or a house payment, and if one is looking for a job, you absolutely need a reliable contact number.

Hey, if Laura Bush can give charity to an unqualified, dishonest, doddering old fool, Michelle Obama can give money to a homeless guy with a cell phone.

Did you ever think the man pictured is not homeless, you senile idiot?

Many family members supply cellphones to their homeless and usually mentally ill relatives. Sometimes it is all that you are able to do for them. At least that way they have some form of communication with them in case of an emergency ect..

At last. An action President for ALL americans not top 10%.

Andrew, you are stupid. Have you heard pay as you go cell phones. Just because one is hoemless does not mean that you have nothing. It means you do not have the resources to pay for shelter. Please do not direspect the first lady's humane efforts with immature journalism.

Much as I tend to agree that this was a somewhat hollow gesture on the part of the First Lady (that's a pretty good class of homeless people she's seving there), I must take exception to your rather snide comment about how the man in the article affords a cell phone if he's so poor and homeless. I suggest that you do a little journalistic research, if it's not too bothersome.

Many folks who live in shelters have prepaid cellphones. No bills to send, just when you have a few bucks, you can apply it to your account. They even sell prepaid cards that you can purchase at most kwiki-marts, imagine that!

Prepaids can be a godsend for people who live in these conditions; if you don't have a phone number or an address, there's pretty much no way you could hope to get a job. With a prepaid cell phone and even the address of a homeless shelter, you stand a much better chance of being considered.

So next time, save the snark until after you've asked--and got answers to--those "bothersome journalistic questions."

I wonder if she brought along some of the $100.00 steaks she serves every Wednesday night to the rich folks? Hmmmm Probably Not!

"If this unidentified meal recipient is too poor to buy his own food, how does he afford a cellphone?...And if he is homeless, where do they send the cellphone bills?"

He might be recently homeless, and the cellphone is a vestige of his "former life."

Cellphones are ubiquitous these days - some allow for pre-paid service, and others have lots of different, affordable rate plans. I've also heard of some assistance programs that provide low-income folks with donated cell phones and service to aid them in procuring employment.

They might send the cellphone bills to his temporary residence, or the residence of a trusted friend or family member (the kind of place you might live for a while, then leave, so you're not a burden). Being homeless doesn't have to mean you have no ties at all.

fyi, most homeless people work or have some type of income, though not sufficient to afford housing. A cell phone is neccessary for employment, and, frequently, they have phones that are not on a monthly contract, but operate on pay as you go cards that you can buy so many minutes at a time. You can buy a card for as little as $5. Which won't get you housing in most countries, let alone the US.

A little jumping the gun on your pessimism ... In my area, such Soup Kitchens, Food Banks, etc don't just serve homeless people, but also the poor, the eldery, etc ... One such kitchen offers meals (breakfast and lunch) at a nominal fee (25-or-35-cents) ....

Then again, that person could be another volunteer ...

Badger the AP to verify it

Call me a country girl - I googled risotto and the basic recipe on wikipedia calls for butter, wine, a special type of rice....... I thought I heard her ask one of the homeless if he would like mushroom risotto..(I can't afford mushrooms - it would be a luxury item for me) and the report says broccoli........ WELL, IT SEEMS THE HOMELESS EAT BETTER THAN REGULAR FOLKS....... is this the wealth redistribution we have heard about....?

P.S. I would like to be able to afford a camera phone......

You can buy cellphone minutes in small blocks for cash up front, using "prepaid phone" cards. No monthly bill. They are widely used by the poor. The prepaid cellphones themselves are available for about $25 new, and less used. They're not hard to come by.

There is even a pilot program ("Safelink Wireless") to provide pre-paid wireless phones to people near the poverty line who don't have home-phone "lifeline" service (mandated minimal phone service for the poor). The idea is that phones are vital not just in emergencies but for things like looking for jobs, contacting healthcare workers and other caregivers, and otherwise trying to keep your life together, and the cost of providing minimal pre-paid service may avoid worse consequences for someone who is too poor even to have basic at-home phone service.

So there are several ways someone of limited means can get access to cellphones. It's a pretty ubitquitous technology today, and not very expensive.

The reporter's questions are really quite naive. Having a cell phone - even if you are homeless - is the only possible hope of ever having a job. Homeless and poor people need to have them, ESPECIALLY if they don't have a home to send bills to. People with cell phones can use them to get day work, via craigslist and whatnot. I have worked with homeless people, who will use the internet at the public library to try to get work, find a home, etc...and without the cell phone, they'd have no chance whatsoever. Cell phones are bigger in the third world, too, for exactly the same reason - it gives the migrating poor access to connect with the world. As for bills, there are plenty of services - Sprint, MetroPCS, where you can walk into their office and pay your bill. Virgin mobile and others are "pay as you go" and you buy time at a cash register to activate the phone - there IS no billing, no contract, no mailing. I find the reporting from this reporter not only naive, but frankly, lazy; it would take little effort to find out these answers to questions about the poor and homeless. This person didn't think it was worth of knowing, apparently, before opinionating in the Los Angeles Times.

Its a prepaid phone most likely. I have one myself. There are no bills and you can refill it by buying an inexpensive card. One can be had for the price of a few bottles of ripple, which you probably wouldn't be questioning how they obtained if they had that in their hand instead.

Dude, if you are homeless a cell phone is a life line that you would forgo other things to have. How can you get a job without a number for an employer to call? If you're sleeping on the streets how could you call the police in a dangerous situation? Your cynicism is startling.

Are you really suggesting that homeless people shouldn't have telephones?

Pay as you go phones can be had for as little as $25 and you buy minutes as you need them, no plan and no bills.

Cells phones make life a lot easier for the homeless. They can apply for jobs and leave a contact number. They can contact family or 911 in an emergency. etc.

Who thought that someone owning a phone was fishy?
