Renew America Together: A Call to Service. On December 16, 2008, the 2009 Presidential Inaugural Committee announced that on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the eve of the Inauguration, President-elect Barack Obama and Vice-President-elect Joe Biden will launch a national organizing effort as part of an ongoing commitment to community service and civic engagement across America.

On Monday, Jan. 19, Obama, Biden and their families -- just like Americans in communities all across the country -- will participate in activities dedicated to serving others. Because it is also the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, the day’s events are designed to further commemorate the legacy of a man who lived his life in service to others; who believed that everybody can be great because anybody can serve.

According to the inaugural committee, unlike past calls to service, Obama will ask Americans to do more than offer just a single day of service to others. He will ask all Americans to make an ongoing commitment to our communities, because it is precisely that sense of unity and shared purpose that is necessary to solve our greatest common challenges.
