Caption next to new George W. Bush painting draws senator's rebuke

January 14, 2009 |  8:24 am

As everyone on the planet, of course, knows, white lilies in a painting signify purity.

There happen to be white lilies in a newly-unveiled painting of President George W. Bush at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington.

There happens to be an alleged independent senator named Bernie Sanders from (Who'd have guessed?) Vermont. He happens to object to the explanatory card displayed next to the painting. He's demanding a change.

And since after next week's inauguration, G.W.B. will be gone from the White House and B.S. will still be perched on the Hill, the gallery is complying. Our co-blogger Christopher Knight has the full story and a photo over at Culture Monster.
