Bush's presidency nears end with a moment eerily reminiscent of start

January 12, 2009 | 10:04 am

Professional political reporters hear a lot of talking in their line of work. Every once in a while they witness a piece of history.

And it sticks with them.

As we advance toward next week's inauguration and another new presidency, our blogger colleague Mark Silva takes us back to the start of this presidency. Silva happened to be the presidential print pool reporter traveling with the relatively new President George W. Bush (note much less gray hair) on what began as a routine trip to Florida, including a session with some eager grade school students that produced a photo destined to become etched into our nation's mind for a long while. (Pass your cursor over the photo for the caption.)

We won't spoil Mark's touching little story. He's got it over here in the Swamp.

The day was Sept. 11, 2001. The photo is below.

White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card interrupts a reading session with President George W. Bush and some Florida grade schoolers to whisper word that a second airplane has crashed into the other World Trade Center Tower--in other words, the first one was no accident
