Website map offers bird's eye view of L.A. County's vote on Prop. 8

For many, one of the surprising aspects of California's passage of a controversial ballot measure banning gay marriage -- Proposition 8 -- was that it won narrow approval in Los Angeles County.

Some of our hard-working colleagues at The Times have put together a "results by precincts" map that, through color shading, provides a fascinating at-a-glance look at where support for or opposition to the measure was the most intense -- and where it was more mixed.

A mouse click on this page also calls up a comparable map for results from a handful of other contests -- including the presidential race. Barack Obama carried the county with almost 70% of the vote, so for Democrats, this depiction is literally a rhapsody in blue.

For those wanting a city-by-city breakdown of the vote on Prop. 8 within the county, that's available in chart form.

The measure's opponents are pursuing legal avenues in hopes of voiding it; The Times' Dan Morain has the latest on those efforts here.

As a straight grandfather, I'd like to say some things to those who claim that being gay is a choice (though many people and some scientific evidence shows otherwise):

Speaking freely is a choice. But it is also a right.

The courts are here to protect the rights of minorities.

That's in the constitution.

Equal protection under the law is one of the most important rights of all.

It's what keeps a rich and powerful man from being able to stop you in the street and take your car if he wants it.

amen, bill. since when do we put the civil rights of some citizens up for a vote ? do gay people get their taxes lowered now that they are second-class citizens ?
our constitution says 'EQUAL protection' ... are we now to put an asterisk next to that clause that says 'except for homos when it comes to marriage rights' ?? this outrageous assault on all californians must be overturned.

Surprise, all the ghetto parts of LA voted 'YES'.

how is it an assualt on all californians when the majority voted for it??
