A lone Republican leader defends Sarah Palin while McCain is mum

November 8, 2008 |  2:45 am

Yes, it's shocking, we know here at the Ticket. But there is at least one prominent Republican sticking up for Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. Go figure. Her presidential running mate sure isn't.

The 44-year-old working mom singlehandedly energized the party's base with an electrifying speech and refreshing personality at the Republican National Convention and after.

Between her selection Aug. 29 and the Nov. 4 election,Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential Sarah Palin mobbed by fans Palin did 132 political events in 105 cities in 25 states. That's not exactly dogging it.

And who's heard any leaks from Palin's camp about the awful mishandling of her media rollout in September?

But in the, what-is-it-now, four days since American voters decisively opted for the younger guy from Illinois, one or two of John McCain's brave aides have been anonymously leaking uncorroborated charges about Palin's personality, knowledge, spending habits, etc., which the media gobbles up, in an apparent attempt to pin the defeat on the female half of the GOP ticket.

Good luck with that. Anyone who saw McCain and Palin work together, saw as the partisan crowds chanted her name during his speech.

Back home in her Anchorage governor's office, Palin defends herself, as The Times' Seema Mehta and Maeve Reston describe in an article this morning.

This issue isn't going away immediately. Love her or leave....

...her, win or lose, the media knows there's a voracious public hunger for almost anything about the Alaska hockey mom still. Especially in the complete absence of any other viable Republican Party leaders.

Palin will spend a chunk of this weekend talking to Fox News' Greta Van Susteren for a long broadcast interview Monday evening. And Tuesday night, Veterans Day, McCain will chat with Jay Leno on NBC.

Now, amid the deafening silence of other prominent GOP leaders, including Mike Duncan, the party's alleged national chair, at least the state chair of the South Carolina Republican Party is speaking out. Katon Dawson issued a statement Friday bemoaning the anonymous attacks:

"The disappointment felt by many Republicans following Tuesday’s election is certainly understandable. However, the attacks on Gov. Sarah Palin made by a disgruntled handful of political insiders are unacceptable. Their claims, made under the veil of anonymity, can never be verified and only serve as fodder for our opposition.

A late Florida campaign sign supporting Alaska Governor and Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin without mentioning the top of the GOP ticket, John McCain

"The media has already demonstrated its propensity to discredit Gov. Palin, and the Democrats are undoubtedly rejoicing at the sight of this Republican cannibalism.

"Now is the time for our Party to unite –- not behind any one individual, but behind our time-tested principles of limited government, opportunity for working Americans, traditional values, and individual responsibility.

"I respectfully ask my fellow Republicans to join me in condemning these divisive attacks so that we can focus on the task at hand -– moving forward as a Party and moving forward as a nation.”

While most attention is naturally focused on the presidential winner, let's see if any other Republican leaders speak out from one of their vacation homes.

Leno is no Tom Brokaw, but he might ask the Arizona senator, about the intramural post-game defamation of the running mate he himself so enthusiastically chose out of the blue.

Why can't McCain even seem to control a couple members of his own Apple Dumpling Gang?

McCain should demand that the anti-Palin persons in his campaign identify themselves and be questioned OPENLY about their claims.

McCain's campaign was one of the worst run in years. McCain/Palin lost, not because of Palin, but because of the clearly better organized campaign of Obama/Biden. Axelrod was the Rove of this election.

As far as I'm concerned, Governor Palin was the ONLY bright spot in the Presidential campaign.

What? Bashing McCain throughout the election season wasn't enough? Let's just drag it out a little longer, eh? Let's just beat him up a little more? The torture McCain endured in the Hanoi Hilton couldn't have been any more painful than the vicious, hateful, petty and pathetic attacks he's suffered from his own party.

We won't hold the jerks making the comments responsible. No, we'll give them a pass. This is all about McCain, right?

Who has even asked McCain for his comment? What did he say? I've seen lots of snide remarks about McCain not saying anything on her behalf, but haven't seen any effort to get his reaction. We have no idea what McCain has or has not said because no one has told us that. Given the pitiable state of both the media and the Republican party, McCain could yell his undying gratitude and loyalty for Palin from the rooftops, and no one would see fit to report it.

No wonder Obama won. We got the president we deserve.

McCain defended Obama with more passion. Sarah Palin tried to re-ignite the Republican base, she succeeded. McCain has proven to be a grumpy old man, and worse. In not defending Pallin, he has proven to be an ass.

The big money wing, represented by the Mittster, is behind the leaks. You betcha. And Fox is only too happy to air as much of it as possible because Murdoch doesn't like the born-agains, represented by Palin.
The Republican Party is in disarray. So badly in disarray that the discredited Newtster's name is being floated for the top of the ticket in 2012. As we say in the wastewater treatment business: The old turds float to the top.

Sorry, but I would be remiss not to ask how much was allocated to clean up Bristol's beau Levi?
And are the sacred/scared nuptials still on? Was Levi's appearance at the GOP convention bought and paid for too?

you need help mia

John McCain was not Sarah Palin's "running mate". Sarah Palin was John McCain's runnning mate.

A running mate is a person running for a subordinate position on a joint ticket during an election.

Throughout the campaign, Sarah Palin acted like she was the top of the ticket. She was not and, hopefully, never will be.

McCain could put a stop to this if he wanted to. and he should.

Sara Palin was the only conservative on the Republican ticket and he should be thanking her for the votes he did get.
he wouldn't have got my vote without her simply because I can't call him conservative and keep a straight face.

McCain's aides complained that Palin had "gone rogue", ignoring her advisors and making her own decisions. Uh, isn't this what a maverick does?

But aside from this utterly meaningless and self-serving label, Sarah Palin's choice was transparent and condescending to women; as if by just selecting her, every female on the continent would blindly cast their votes for her, too stupid to remember that she was an intellectually and culturally stunted redneck who had no place whatsoever pretending that she could manage a superpower.

If this is who the Republicans think should one day be president, God help us all.

We must indeed come together as a nation, but only if all those involved recognize that intellectual curiosity and cultural awareness are prerequisites to serving in public office.

If one has to read several of your paragraphs two or three times just to make sense of the jumbled prose, then It's not good writing. Are you angry this morning, choking on your own rage?

They are but two halves of the same rotten apple. Unprincipled liars. Scheaming, scummy politicians.

Who has come out to defend Sarah?

How about who is coming out to defend gays? Ohh thats right to the ridiculous rigid bigoted right they aren't really people are they?

Shame on you all for voting to take away others simple legal rights by calling it a moral or family value.

Religious fascism plain and simple. And you call yourselfs Christians lol. Hypocrites, nothing but hateful ignorant christian hypocrites. I spit on you and laugh at your beliefs. You prove them to be nothing by your acts.

I am a straight married man. I support all others rights whatever color, beliefs or choice of partner.

I think it is time to outlaw the religious idiots and put the purveyors of this bile out of business.

I say close the bigots buildings, close these so called churches, flog the hatemongering preachers, burn a few of these so called christians....fair is fair.

When Republicans run as solid, grounded, clear on the issue, not riding the fence conservatives, they win.
Ronald Regan won that way. Jindall won that way and Sarah Palin was incredibly popular that way.

Registered Republican's have a 7 point advantage over democrats, so I would say that Republican's more often loss elections, versus their opponents winning them.

McCain lost that 7 percent advantage, because he was too liberal and many Republicans did not want to vote for him. Sarah Palin would keep that 7 percent and also excite the base to actually turn out to vote for her.

People respond to a leader like that.

Obama is all show. He's make belive. He's hollywood. McCain is proven to be better at reality, but Obama was better at unreality, faking it, playing the part, whatever you want to call it. (So was Biden by the way).

Now that Obama has to live and work more inside reality, I'm not sure he can take it. I'm not sure if he can ever give a straight answer.

John McCain was a flawed candidate from the start, the same way Bob Dole was. Neither had a chance, mostly because of age. Secondly, because of the RNC. The Republican Party, of which I was a card-carrying member, is a joke. They need to get back to basics - Ron Paul got it right. Now he has the last laugh.
Back to Sarah Palin: I was gonna vote third party until she was picked as vice. She was the only bright spot in the race on the Republican side. She is a regular person with regular problems. I am tired of 'career politicans' and their cronies running the show. Maybe Obama will be change? We'll see.

PALIN 2012. You've got a friend here, in Ct. NO MORE McCAINS. NO MORE GRHAMNESTYS, GIULIANIS, or ANY of these wimps. Sarah, you're the MAN. And we will be RIGHT HERE, when you decide to run. GO SARAH! The rest of you puke, wimp Republicrats, just GO AWAY.

If it had not been for Gov. Palin on the ticket, I would have not voted. John McCain is nothing more than liberal light. Gov.Palin is a true conservative! I hope she runs in 2012 against this so-called change libertard. Te only change were going to get is less in our pocket. Thanks republitards for nominating John instead of Sarah in the first place. Had she been an option in the primaries there would have been a better chance of retaining the white house.

I'm republican and we have always been know to be aggressive and forceful in our tactics. This has always worked in the past. This is a new time and the younger generation is looking for something different. If we can't be fair to our own party why would anyone want to join us now. We have to reorganize the party and look to do things differently if we want to get back in the oval office and senate.

I think the McCain does need to make a statement and quit letting Palin take all the blame. He made many mistakes on this campaign but he needs to make a statement.

Wow. Republicans theses days sure are allergic to mud, especially the kind they love flinging at their opponents. Two sayings come to mind: "What goes around, comes around" and "The lady doth protest too much." Yes, Mia, this country does deserve a better president, which is why after 8 years of hell we have finally voted one in.

Palin was wrong for the VP pick and someone I would not want next in line for the presidency behind a 72 year old man. She may have political spark but knows little of the country or the world beyond Alaska. In time her expertise can grow but it is not present at this time. Her interviews, speeches, off the cuff remarks and debates did nothing to project anything other than the lady was out of her element. She pretty much had an open door to say or do in this campaign and suffered much less that a man in direct attacks by the media or political opponets that would a man with her knowledge level and standing in her position. There is much ado made about her crowds and political attraction. However, take away the radical and hardline conservative base and she becomes a much less popular as a political newcomer. Her appeal is more limited that credit is given and to be a voice in the future, there is much she will have to learn and change to receive broad acceptance as more continued national exposure will most certainly expose many more shortcomings.

Having said that, as someone that did and still believes, that Palin has no political substance nor the knowledge to be a national leader, I find the backstabbing from the campaign camp very wrong as well as McCain's apparent unwilliness to speak against it. This was the agreed upon selection by McCain and his campaign and regardless of her ability, it was their selection and they should stand by her and to not do so, is completely wrong. Their handling of her was wrong and withholding her from the public only made it more shocking to find she knew very little of anything not Alaska. They turned her into an attack dog which made her less attractive to anyone not conservative radical.

They set the program by which she followed and her harm to the campaign was no less than that of an indecisive and bumbling McCain or the campaign leadership that turned away from the national issues people wanted to hear about to character assassination coupled with lies and half truths designed to smear not educate the voters. She doesn't deserve this treatment from McCain or her campaign but it does reflect harshly on the judgement of McCain, his campaign leaders, and the America First reputation that McCain so much wants to maintain. This should not be about Palin but McCain. The Election was his to win or his to lose. He was the candidate and the campaign was his to shape and to control. It didn't happen, the campaign ran McCain for the most part and Palin completely. McCain should stand up and say so.

The media seems a lot more excited about continuing this silly story about infighting at the McCain camp than reporting and discussing the fact that Sarah Palin was totally vindicated of any ethics violations in the so called "troopergate" witch hunt. This major revelation was broken in a tiny story the night before the election and the MSM chose to ignore it and continues to.

Sarah Palin killed John McCain. If he picked her, I suppose it was suicide. I hope she rises to the top of the Republican Party. That will make 2012 real blue.

Sarah Palin killed John McCain. If he picked her, I suppose it was suicide. I hope she rises to the top of the Republican Party. That will make 2012 real blue.

This is exactly what killed the Republican Party in this election, there is no leader. The country doesn't trust the Republican party after they pushed W. Then, when you have gathering with off with his head and booing, the Republican Party comes across as desperate to hold on to the ideals of just trust us we know what is best for you. Then you get all in fighting and finger pointing about not energizing the base. The truth is W won on the evangelical vote by promising to stop abortion, get prayer in school, and allow he 10 commandments to be posted everywhere. He wasn't able to do any of those things, so the extreme right just sat out this vote. If McCain had been the person we saw during his concession speech and not listened to his handlers, he would be president now. It is sad when he has to stop the booing and correct some old crazy lady saying Obama is a terrorist when his own advisers were the ones encouraging those thoughts and actions. W at least just did and said whatever the handlers told him to do.

'No wonder Obama won. We got the president we deserve."

No, sorry Mia, you and the other conservative Republicans deserve Bush.

The real reason for the Republican loss was what we all saw during McCain's televised rallies: small town yahoos callling for Obama's death; some drug-addled grandma calling Obama an "A-rab." ; racists fearing that if Obama gets elected, he'll call out the army of "angry blacks" to annhilate the white race.

And the look on McCain's face each time -- clearly a look of dismay, a look that said, "What the hell am I representing?"
