With only 1,448 days until election day 2012, Ron Paul ponders another run
With only 1,448 days left before the 2012 election, you-know-who is making plans to launch another long-shot campaign for the presidency.
So much can happen b
efore Nov. 6, 2012: Hillary Clinton could be on the Supreme Court. Her husband could be getting $400,000 per speech.
There'll be yet another James Bond actor. Shrek IX will be showing. And Harry Reid will be scowling. Still.
Also, you can bet Rep. Ron Paul will be running for the White House again, probably as a Republican. Not so much to actually win, mind you; RP runs to make a point about less government and foreign intervention.
And anyway by then, at age 77 Paul will be the second oldest guy to launch a losing presidential campaign, behind only Ralph.
Thanks to one of our favorite libertarian writers, David Weigel over at Reason.com, we get a Ron Paul update and a peek inside the opaque window that is the perpetual Paul campaign. Weigel tells us, via Paul's grandson-in-law Jesse Benton, that the Texas congressman is pondering another run.
Benton says Paul needs to make up his mind soon, like by mid-summer next year, because "those voters in New Hampshire and Iowa expect to see their candidates early and often."
Benton says Paul "would be very likely to run as a Republican," in large part because the hated media conspiracy that allegedly ignores him so much gives him more exposure as a GOP candidate than as some kind of fringe nutjob.
With the primaries a dim memory and Paul once again back in the House for an 11th term (unopposed this November because Texas Democrats know a political tornado when they see one), people tend to forget that Paul raised nearly $35 million from his fervent fans.
That's way more than Mike Huckabee and almost as much as Mitt Romney dished out from his own funds. In fact, Paul raised more money in the third quarter last year than any other Republican.
Of course, Paul's total $35 million is only about two weeks' or less take for the '08 Barack Obama money-printing machine.
But since when have the odds ever deterred Paul?

Thanks for the article about RP. Unfortunately, that's not a very good photo of him -- it implies he's alone, which couldn't be farther from the truth. He has a remarkable number of sensible and intelligent supporters.

You're still smearing Dr. Paul with the "fringe nutjob" label after everything that he has predicted over his long career has come true? Or are you just using Ron Paul's name to get hits on your page?
Posted by: Kit Maira | November 19, 2008 at 09:48 AM
Nice attempt to spin the true weight of Paul's support in the minds of readers. By starting early, you've got a great jump on painting the picture of a lonely man's, pre-defeated run for office.
The photo you chose will really stick in the sheeple's subconscious, showing Paul all alone in a room with no supporters around... Beautifully done!
And to make sure he doesn't win, you brilliantly state it as known fact that he will not. Molding the very thoughts of readers is such an art form... and you, sir, are a true artist. Thank you for doing what you can to stop a man who is a threat your owners.

Why bring this up now? Ron Paul was dragged through the mud for saying it was the economy before anyone else. He was dragged through the mud for wanting the troops home and an unjust war ended. He was dragged through the mud for taking on big bankers and corrupt politicians. We simply do not deserve Ron Paul. We deserve the globalist Obama and his helper (the globalist McCain). Both want Big Bankers to control the economy. America has been sold down the river, and there is no going back without considerable financial pain, which the American popular vote has no stomach for. All Ron Paul really wanted was liberty for his fellow Americans. To be able to save a dollar and in twenty years still be worth a dollar. Now you have to invest heavily just to keep the value of your savings, unless the stock market loses 40 percent (on top of an official 2 to 4 percent inflation rate per year--compounded over twenty years is a whopping 30-70 percent overall loss of value on your dollar) He just wanted true "freedom FROM government". And the loudest media voices killed our only shot for a while. (liberal and conservative alike)

The only way the GOP would actually allow Ron to run legitimately.... as a sacraficial lamb.....
The Media is not just Liberaly biased..... The Media also takes their ques from the heads of the Republican Party and if they say " That dog will never hunt" the media listens to them--- because they control the GOP...
That is why RON was considered a crack pot.... because the GOP CZARS called him such...
The Media understands the importance and knowledge of RON PAUL and turn to him as a pundant now that he is no longer running in a white house race..... (watch CNN, MSNBC, FOX, and quite a few others-- they are consistantly calling on him for reasons for the economic crisis.
Its the head of the GOP party that controls who is given the NOD...... Thats why the worst campaign in the primaries all of the sudden was able to aquire the Nomination with no money, and a deathly ammount of support until the GOP told the Media MCCAIN is our man...
Otherwise...... explaine to me why ROMNEY backed out? ROMENY would have abliterated McCain in a ground floor convention battle....... and the HEAD of the GOP new that.... So, they told Romeny--- Its not your time....
It is amazing to me that Popular opinion is so insignificant-------- As their were always tons of people who said... I 'd vote for RON--- if he could win......
and that is what the GOP CZARS through the Media mouth piece made everyone believe.....
Wake up Political speculators...... Its not just the Media.... Politics in general are corupted at all levels and are reigned over by KING MAKERS......
It is no longer we the People.......

If you understood liberty and the importance of the constitution, you would be writing your little heart out to educate your readers. Educate them on the role of government and why Dr. Paul is the only candidate who actually defends liberty.
"America has put on a new face, but its heart full of hate, mind drowning in greed, and spirit which spreads evil, murder, repression and despotism continue to be the same as always," the deputy of al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden said.
Our own "enemies" know Obama is not change. Anyone telling the truth and giving sound ideas to problems, is treated like Dr. Paul by the controlled media... He is the most principled man in politics. I guess thats why none of you get it... Check yourself Malcolm. The news is obviously for entertainment, If it had anything to do with actually learning something you would be talking about why Dr. Paul best represents our constitutional republic, not this democracy everyone thinks we have... Read book old man...

I'm so sick of everyone saying how impossible it is for someone to win. The world is flat too, huh? Nothing is impossible. Ron Paul has a better chance of winning than any other republican if he could just clinch the nomination. That won't ever happen though, if Non Paul evangelists keep preaching their impossibility doctrine.

Well, there's no need to dismiss Paul at this point; let's just wait until the economy really tanks. Then, we can go back and review all the tapes from previous presidential candidates who talked up the economy. Foolish optimism always yields fanatical results. Think Napoleon.
So, we don't need Paul's negativism. We need the charge of the light brigade, the battle of waterloo, to tell us what is wrong. We need central bankers around the world meddling in things they don't understand and can't control to set us free. These brilliant brains will decipher the whole problem and get the international markets moving.
We need more regulation. To start a business in California, you get about 73,000 regulations--I think we need double that.
We need more wars. In fact, we need more Empire. The US already owns the planet, but some nations aren't getting this point. So rude and inconsiderate of these scofflaws.
We need more democracy. We need to make sure that everyone who dissents with the current system is roped in, and told to like it or lump it. They must be "for" or "against" the govt There is no alternative
So, let's just sit in our little cardboard boxes, watch and read Stalin Media, and pretend that all is well. Let's play "make-believe" games about the government. The all-powerful leaders will solve all of our problems. Jesus, I should have gone to Church today.

The image was actually reported to be photoshopped to remove many people with him in the room.
Interesting isn't it.

I see you're using that deceptive photograph again. Can't use the one where he's talking to ten thousand people at the Rally for the Republic, because that wouldn't fit your script, would it?
When the picture you used was taken, Dr. Paul was resting his feet a bit before going into the next room, where he addressed a standing-room-only crowd.

Edited out of Al-Zawarhi's latest message was a long
praise of congressman Paul and a multi million pledge to
his up-coming bid for the GOP nomination. Paul wants to
hide this from the public and used his reputed strong arm
tactics in this latest censorship abuse by the MSM.

Its amazing how two opposing sides of the political spectrum beat up on the one man who speaks the truth. While your articles and other medium continually talked about the insignificance of Ron Paul, his common sense ideas about the Constitution and the economy helped prepare millions to weather this current economic turmoil. All prophets are unappreciated in their own times and nations. Remember Mr. Malcolm, that the only business protected by the bill of rights is the Freedom of the Press. The Founding Fathers would be embarrased at the way your field has let down the American Public in reporting what truly occurs in the dark shadows of our goverment and our economy. Thank you Ron Paul and all the supporters who helped spread the word.

I've been shown this picture and i think it's brilliant. It shows a man in many points of views, but the public chooses to rally round the weak beaten man view. which he does, but because we know better, this can't be crammed down our throats. this dude's every word is pure revolution electricity. he's just sittin' there re-charging, to me. Posted by: greg | November 20, 2008 at 10:46 AM
So, Al Qaeda endorsed him. They endorsed Obama too. Any politician who says we are not going to look for trouble in the middle east is endorsed, and so what? Ron Paul honestly makes me cry. He is the most principled, kindest, most gentle and respectable man I can think of off the top of my head. Shame on these people for bringing him down. He really does not deserve that. I would never make this argument for anyone else. He is a true America, a true patriot. I have nothing else to say. I hope the Ron Paul supporters are twice as loud in 2012. I will be among them, hoping to wrest the country from the hands of these cowards and corrupt fools who have taken it, whom cowards like this man Andrew Malcolm admires and befriends.

I laugh at the comment about "photoshopping". It really appears that Ron Paul is sitting in a chair prior to some kind of interview or speech. Maybe it is on set at the production of one of his campaign commercials... who knows. But it is probably not photoshopped, yet you can't say anything about Ron Paul with some conspiracy theorist idiot acting a fool and making up stuff.
Hey, CT morons: Show the proof the picture is photoshopped by presenting the original rather than always starting your sentences with "I hear", "Supposedly" or "From what I know". You know nothing.
Yet these CT idiots like to claim that it is YOU that is supposed to render the truth on such a photo is real rather than them prove it is a fake. That's ridiculous at best. If you apply that logic to the real world, you are not long for this place.
Get a job, you idiots. Move on. Ron Paul is done.

Funny how I learn so much more from the comments than the actual article. I'm so sick of these mainstream idiots. It's starting to look like a book I read once...
Ron Paul is not alone! WE ARE RON PAUL!
Even if he died today millions more worldwide would continue to spread the message of peace, liberty and prosperity. That was America's gift to the world; it will not be easily forgotten.
Posted by: Andrew | November 22, 2008 at 09:31 AM
So let me get this straight. Mr. Malcolm. Instead of choosing to cover a story on a corrupt Senator like Stevens or the involvement of Barney Franks and Chris Dodd in the Fannie/Freddie crisis you try to bring down a long sitting Congressman with no skeletons in his closet. A man who is for following the constitution and curbing our policing of the world. He was also a medical doctor and served this country during a time of war. I am not even a Ron Paul supporter but i have to say you seriously need to wake up and start reporting about the constant corruption in this country and less about someone who was trying to change it for the better. But I guess what else should we expect from a member of the MSM.
Posted by: Joe | November 22, 2008 at 10:26 AM
This story was awesome. I loved how you pointed out how he is a conservative spender. How he served our country proudly and has been reelected year after year as a congressman that is known for doing what he says. I especially liked the part where you mentioned how he is not tied to any sketchy individuals or how he hasn't been involved in any form of corruption. You reporting is above any other report i have ever seen in my life. You sir deserve another pulitzer prize for this article. I am so jealous of you. I think i want a life size Andrew Malcolm poster for my dorm room here at MIT. You sir are my idol.
Ricky
P.S. Maybe if you get some free time you could report on Ted Stevens or the link between Barney Frank/Chris Dodd and the Fannie/Freddie fiasco. If you have enough intelect or courage to do so.
Posted by: Ricky | November 22, 2008 at 10:34 AM
The preamble to the Bill of Rights states that "in order to prevent the misconstruction and abuse of power further restrictive declatory restrictive clauses must be added". The 16th amendment does not mean that Congress can tax for no reason, tax for unconstitutional programs, tax for political gestures such that everyone should pay their fair share, or for an unconstituitonal debt. The ninth amendment is such a declaratory and restrictive cluase for all the amendments including the 16th amendments and the 9th amendment also prohibits the Supreme Court for allowing Congress to tax for no reason, tax for unconstitutional programs, tax for political gestures such that everyone should pay their fair share, or for an unconstituitonal debt.

Ron Paul has now been proven to have understood far more than the others who were running...the ones who were rolling their eyes when he was warning of the coming economic woes from all this borrow, borrow, borrow. He was warning about the stuff none of them were listening to, nor admitting until it all hit the fan in the middle of the election's last few weeks.
I didn't vote for anyone in the last primary (did vote in the main election for McCain relunctantly) but if Ron Paul runs the next time, I'm there to vote for him, as I've come to have a great deal of respect for his intelligence and candor. He's been proven to have a far better understanding of what is really going on in this country than any of the rest and not afraid to voice it.
I take your picture to show that Ron Paul wasn't afraid to be the lone person running who wasn't afraid to stand alone on values needed for this country. You probably didn't mean it that way, but to me it shows a man who isn't afraid to stand up for what's right.
Go, Ron, go!
Posted by: Jen | November 23, 2008 at 01:56 PM
Ron Paul was the only viable Republican candidate, and he was compltely ignored by the mainstream media. The problem is now, that the Republican party is in disarray, and need a true conservative to lead them in 2012. The only candidate who can attract the young vote, and the true conservatives is this man. I'm an Obama guy, but I would definatly have voted for this man, if he had made it to the end instead of MCAIN.

Why does the media always jerk us around around with unappealing photos? Seriously, is that the best one you could find, or the worst one you could find? It must be one or the other.
Posted by: Troy | November 27, 2008 at 10:21 PM
I can't fault the author too much. He has given Paul mostly positive reporting. Of course all reporting on the man's substance would naturally be good.
But Malcom I think just wants to fit in with the media elite rather than his readers who want to know facts and substance.
Posted by: Gmartine | November 28, 2008 at 05:48 PM
What?! Most readers here don't care about Individual Freedom, Sound Money, or Small Government. They enjoy fart jokes and stringing together ad hominems; tard, tard, tard! HURRR! It's a 1-up mentality where debate degenerates to parroting Agitprop type pundits and winning consists of who can vomit the most insults in a paragraph. Like this is some hotdog eating contest, except the crap goes out, not in.
Seriously, Ron Paul isn't ever going (nor ever needs) to get much affection at TotT, he's getting quite a lot of it, post elections, from his economic predictions. Well, besides those who begrudgingly stumble back here via Google -- guilty! Granted it's never a disappointing moment to enjoy the bitter-sweet rapid-fire succession of backhanded compliments with underpinnings of seething rhetorical laughter by our beloved Malcom -- it's the dark humor some have grown to love -- like victims of Stockholm syndrome.

I'd vote for Ron Paul again. Probably the only candidate who gives a care about the constitution which... :: cough cough ::...is the last defense of our rights.
Hopefully President elect Barak Obama gives the people what he promised. If he does, there is a good chance that the American people will lose many of their rights with the constitution being used as a snot-rag.
One can only hope that the American people will care enough about their rights to vote for Ron Paul (or a conservative candidate) in 2012.
Who knows? Maybe we've finally forgotten why rights are important. I have a sneaking suspicion that President Elect Barak Obama will help a ton of people remember why our founders were willing to die for rights.
Posted by: Jer | December 04, 2008 at 09:45 AM
Ron Paul is the only honest congressman left that I can think of. The rest sold us down the river a long time ago for their own bribes, campaign contributions and most act as whores to the lobbyists.... American citizens need to start waking up and take a real close look at our country. I don't expect everyone to agree with Ron Paul on every issue but having a congressman who has consistent principles should get their attention. He has been right about too many things with the economy and our liberties. His message hasn't changed in 30 years.
Posted by: samba | December 24, 2008 at 12:47 AM
Is it really fair to say that Paul would not run to win? I don't think so. When he ran, he ran to win, and it will be the same if he runs again. I certainly hope that he does.
Posted by: Nick | January 05, 2009 at 01:50 PM
Intelligent, articulate, pragmatic, passionate, humble, honorable, courageous, earnest, true, indomitable. Adjecives that I believe describe Mr. Paul's character. Our society today snickers at these traits (having succumbed to the hopelessness that pervades). I have only barely managed to hang on to the ideals of my childhood, but still do respect and revere them and those that possess them. More importantly, I share much of his political philosophy. I'm 'hoping' for real 'change'. If he runs again, he has my vote this time.

I have a keen interest in US politics, and have read a lot of newspapers, but this article is the most biased, pathetic piece of journalism I have ever seen. It is these kinds of unprofessional standards in the US media that feeds the ignorance that is rampent in the American public, leading them to make ill informed political decisions (hence two terms of George Bush and the upheaval he has brought to the Middle East and beyond). Your media has a lot to answer for.

fringe nutjob? are you kidding me? Rp .and. nutjob should never be in the same sentence. how can you badmouth the guy who has predicted it all? how can you hate the candidate who gave you clear justified answers? how can you ignore the only candidate with any economic insight? Apparently these things are trumped by empty rhetoric and whimsical promises, and thats an unfortunate reality of american public persuasion. in the least, when the system falls appart its time to get back to basics. RP 2012!!!

I doubt this comment will make it through the moderator but..here goes. With all that is going on with this country, the crashing dollar to bring in the Amero, the war, too much spending, and way too much borrowing. You would seek to single Ron Paul out this early in the game. Bravo. One thing you might have underestimated is the power of the war tested and true base of Ron Paul. People like me. Good luck with your smears. We have learned new and better ways around you and will NOT make the same mistakes of trusting the papers and TV to tell a simple non bias truth. The new media is "US". Peace. Ron Paul 2012!

You better throw in all your pro-Obama comments in now because in one year he is now longer going to be the golden boy considering his "great" idea to spend this country 1 trillion dollars more in debt is going to break this countries back...

fascinating.
we all say that "the media controls everything" but when I was in new hampshire campaigning for ron paul, i saw it first hand.
they don't call television "programming" for nothing.
we complain that ron paul was ignored by the media. i wish to god that were true. the truth is, there was scarcely a mention of ron paul that was not prefaced by "dark horse, long shot, quixotic, can't-win, fringe".
no other candidate from either party was referred to in that manner.
really, if you were looking for a candidate to call a long-shot , wouldn't a socialist half-black Kenyan native be more appropriate?

How about running a story about how RP called the credit bubble bursting (he called it decades ago). Look at the situation were in now. You 'report' on the people that got us into this mess, and you only mock Dr. Paul.

I am a real estate broker with over 30 agents under my helm here in the Indianapolis area and a vast majority of my agents, including myself, are Ron Paul supporters.
If there is anyone in politics I can give my deepest love and regards to, it is Ron Paul. He has been an inspiration in my life and a true steward in his understanding of economics, history, and of our founding principles that created our nation as a beacon of liberty to all.
I am not worried about how the media misrepresents Ron Paul because the media is losing. The eyes of the public are opening and we are growing aware that we are in a serious situation due to complete corruption and failed ideology that's mandated interventionism through Keynesian principles which has literally plundered the future prosperity of all. It's literally comical to watch the media collapse for they have failed in their duty to be a voice of the people and protect us from the problems we face by asking tough questions and investigating our elected leaders and holding them accountable for their misdeeds.
Posted by: Wayne | January 29, 2009 at 08:55 PM
Andrew Malcom calling out Ron Paul for being old is pretty hilarious.
It sure is easy to make predictions like knowing he would 'lose' another run. It would be such a tragedy if such a highly regarded journalist lost his remaining credibility over something as rediculous as a few cheap jabs at a respectable politician in his internet blog.
So for now, just sit back, drink some prune juice, enjoy that pulitzer, and pray you've got as much foresight as Paul has had regarding domestic, economic, and foreign policies over the last 3 decades.
