TV networks promise they won't name a winner until Barack Obama or John McCain has 270 electoral votes

November 4, 2008 |  4:38 pm

How do the networks call the election?

The Associated Press and the broadcast and television networks have all promised that they will not project a president-elect until either Barack Obama or John McCain has at least 270 electoral votes in his column, according to Matea Gold, who writes about television for The Times.

They also won’t award any electoral votes from a state until after all the polls in that state are scheduled to close.

For more on the protocol, read the rest of Gold's analysis here.
