Sarah Palin's '700 Club' interview (and it's not just about religion)

Since Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was announced in late August as John McCain’s choice as vice president on the GOP ticket, her campaign staff have done their best to keep her far, far away from reporters and their pesky questions.

There have been no formal press conferences Sarah Palin during her interview with David Brody of the Christian Broadcasting Network.(the one this weekend on “Saturday Night Live” doesn’t count, alas). Television has been limited to the obligatory sit-downs with the evening news anchors -- the last of these, with NBC’s Brian Williams, will be broadcast Wednesday and Thursday -- and a visit to the friendly confines of Fox News' "Hannity & Colmes," where Sean Hannity grilled her with such tough questions as “How are you dealing with some of the harsh attacks against you?” and “Do you see media bias in this campaign?”

So it’s not surprising that her next television appearance, on Tuesday, is on “The 700 Club,” the religion-oriented program hosted by televangelist Pat Robertson. But before you dismiss this as just another opportunity for Palin to hit softball questions out of the park, you should know that her interviewer -- David Brody, the political reporter for the Christian Broadcasting Network -- has a reputation as a straight-shooter who, as the Los Angeles Times noted in a 2007 profile, “embraces some liberals and takes aim at some conservatives” and whose reporting is often cited as a must-read/see by the mainstream press.

Brody offers a preview of his interview with Palin at his website, the Brody File. Here are a couple of excerpts:

Why doesn’t she go on “some of the 24/7 cable networks,” such as MSNBC and CNN?

"Well, sometimes it just doesn't do any good. I mean, you set yourself up just to continually be mocked, you know, so sometimes that doesn't do any good, but what I have done in this campaign is in reaching out to the American voters through our rallies, through the one-on-ones, through the small meetings that we've had trying to get our message out, our plans for this country out there minus the filter of some of the filter of the mainstream media because, because that filter as, as we see every day when we turn on the news, too often there is this, this opaqueness, there is this, this spin, this contortion of a person's words and intentions and that does more harm than good, so it's a greater challenge for me and for John McCain to try to get our message out there without that filter of I think some of the world's media. It's a greater challenge, but again, it does make us work harder and try to reach more people. That's why we're traveling around so hard and fast and aggressively across the U.S. is to reach more people."

Why didn’t she give a specific answer to Katie Couric’s question about the newspapers she reads?

"And it's not just that question, but it was some of the other questions that she asked me also and, and it was, I guess, my being such an outsider from the Washington elite and the media elite is the questions she kept asking me were, I kept thinking why aren't you asking me things that really, really matter right now about our economy and about how we're going to win the war and about protecting our constitutional rights in this country, some of the questions that were being fired at me, I was kind of impatient and I think that showed, it's like come on, Katie, let's talk about the things that really matter. And two, the other part of that was I knew that whatever I threw out there, whether it's the USA Today, or New York Times or whatever I said, that's just more fodder for someone to not only mock, but tear apart and presume to at least claim that that is a reflection of my own beliefs, so you know, so I just felt like, let's just move on to the next question."

She also talks about her faith -- and offers her thoughts about Tina Fey, whose pitch-perfect impression of Palin is a highlight of “Saturday Night Live.”

"The 700 Club" is broadcast on cable and satellite on the ABC Family network and the Trinity Broadcasting Network, plus some additional stations. Brody's interview with Palin is Tuesday; check your local listings for time and channel.

Dave Letterman really summed it up nicely - what does your gut tell you about Sarah Palin handling the economic crisis? My 401k statement was scary enough.

I found this recently, and liked it: How Could the Next President Affect Your Financial Plan?

Voyant:

I'm still playing around with it, but I created a better plan than my financial planner gave me. I fired him.

Some of those clips are as bad as the Couric interview.

So she'll won't go on CNN or MSNBC because she'll be mocked, but she will go on SNL to be mocked and look stupid trying to look hip during the rap.

And she's gave that same reason for not answering Couric's question about what she reads to Fox News. CBN also fails to ask the obvious follow-up, how will you act when you're annoyed if you're VP or President?

(and if that were really the reason, she could have told Couric she didn't like the question rather than giving the same non-answer twice)

Brody also failed (at least from the excerpts) to do a follow-up when Palin said she'd repeat her lie that Obama "palled around with terrorists" or point out that McCain opposes a federal constitutional ammendment to ban gay marriage (which Palin says she supports).

I think the Democratic party may be dead. This election may be a watershed for a split the Democrats have brought upon themselves. It is now the party of misogynistic treatment of women such as Hillary and Sarah Palin. Democrat Larry Flynt is making a "rape"film of Sarah Palin and there is no word from the party.

Party officials go after Palin for abuse of power in a case where its actually a case of domestic abuse from a state trooper.

Any woman with common sense must decide whether the Democrats are the party of equal rights anymore.

Palin was incorrect in saying that Obama palled around with terrorists. -- Instead, she should have accurately noted that a terrorist hosted one of Obama''s earliest campaign events, that Obama wrote a positive review of a book written by a terrorist, and that Obama worked side-be-side with a terrorist on a non-profit board.

Gee, Sarah, you poor thing. And I thought your apparent incompetence was, well, your incompetence! I don't buy your BS for a split second. And, apparently, neither do the vast majority of Americans. Yes, you can draw a crowd, but where it really counts - not. Have fun back in Alaska, Sarah. Happy Holidays.

I can't figure out how she and McCain paint themselves as the champions of Christian values, while they still promote this war in Iraq that in which soldiers and civilians alike are dying--it seems like a disconnect to me. And yet, many people buy it, because they are afraid that unless we legislate morality, the whole country is going down the tubes. And the Republicans have taken full advantage of that fear.

I am just so amazed at the rememberance and repeating of talking points from both sides. You are nothing more than 'Sheeple' and have solidified that we live in the 'Cliff Note' times, 'Sound bite times'. No one can think/research for themselves and allow the Media, who is obviously biased and want nothing more than their candidate elected. Our founding fathers would be having heart attacks right now in seeing the topics and direction that this country is going. The size of government, money, and the list could go on. We need to either get back to the constitution or call ourselves something else like 'The People's Republic of America' because that is the way we are going. Doesn't matter who goes into the White House, we have lost our identity.

In times past GOD, yes I'm speaking of our sovereign creator.. has judged nations who have walked away from him, to decided on there own what is right and wrong and to even say that he isn't real. And during those times of judgment he has allowed leaders such as Obama to come into power. Let's all hope and PRAY that this isn't the judgment of God coming upon our nation, lets go to our knees and ask his forgiveness for believing we are above any judgment from him and turn to him who loves us and wants to bless us.
