The latest from Gallup and Pew polls on the presidential race

Based on the Gallup daily tracking poll, it was a wise move for Barack Obama to take a break from the presidential campaign trail.

Then again, based on a new, larger survey of voters by the Pew Research Center, the summer's overall trend is favoring John McCain.

Bottom line: Still no sign of Obama taking full advantage of the political dynamics that should favor Democrats this year; still no sign of a significant boost for McCain that gets him above the mid-to-lower 40% range.

In the latest Gallup average of three consecutive days of polling, Obama continued a slow ascent that began shortly before he embarked on a vacation in Hawaii. He had seen his numbers drop following his much-covered overseas trip last month; at the start of August, he and McCain were tied in the tracking at 44% each. Now, Obama leads by six percentage points, 48% to 42%.

The new Pew survey, conducted from July 31 though Aug. 10, found that McCain had pulled within three points on Obama after trailing him by eight in June.

At summer's start, the numbers were 48% for Obama, 40 for McCain; now it's Obama 46%, McCain 43% (a margin within the poll's margin of error of 2.5 points).

In their overview, the Pew pollsters write:

"Two factors appear to be at play in shifting voter sentiment. First, McCain is garnering more support from his base -- including Republicans and white evangelical Protestants -- than he was in June, and he also has steadily gained backing from white working class voters over this period.

Secondly and more generally, the Arizona senator has made gains on his leadership image. An even greater percentage of voters than in June now see McCain as the candidate who would use the best judgment in a crisis, and an increasing percentage see him as the candidate who can get things done."

The Swamp blog has more on the Pew findings.

The NY Times has a editorial today that says McCain has missed 8 votes on the bill (S.3335) to extend federal tax credits for alternative energies like solar and wind turbines.

Think about that, 8 times this bill has come up to vote and McCain missed all 8 of them, even when he was in Washington, in his senate office.

Now that's real leadership.

So here we are in an energy crisis and McCain cann't even be bothered to vote. So when he talks about using all forms of energy, he's just blowing smoke, because all he really wants is to drill, drill, drill. To help out his buddies in the oil industries.

Republicans have continued to block this bill while calling for more offshore drilling.

Obama has voted missed 5 of the votes but did vote in favor of the bill 3 times.

On November 4th - don't draw a blank.

Yes the Republicans are powerful., the longer this goes on the political arena favors McCain. I could of told you that. Check out the McCane family Ghost

Yah, well before you vote for Obama's slogan of "change" better check and see what that change involves. Higher taxes - no thanks - feeding the world - no thanks - thumbs up on illegals in this country - no thanks and unless all the books about his history are totally incorrect, you may have to wear some new clothes and change your religious habits before long. This guy is for change alright, changing from a democracy to a socialism government. Again - no thanks and no complaints from sheep who think Obama is going to fill their pockets with rich people's money. Once you make the decision to become dependent on the government, there's no going back.

Nate, no one wants you anyway, you are very dumb and it we would be better served if you popped off to your planet and left us to elect Obama

A little humor

Barak Obama and the Curse of the Mummy

Newest movie by George Lucas will be released on November 4, 2008.

A young professor from University of Chicago leaves his job to fight the mummified Tutank-McCain who is back from the dead after a contingent of Al Qaeda insurgents disturbed his secret burial place in Mesopotamia. Those versed in ancient history would know that the same Tutank-McCain is believed to be the person who advised Pharaoh to go after Moses and the Israelites with a "surge" of chariots.

Tutank-McCain and his faithful sidekick, Mark Amenophis Slater, have gathered an army of flag waving zombies in an effort to take over the world. Can Young Barak fight the evil Tutank and Amenophis? The answer will not be revealed until the movie's premier on November 4.

I'd like to see a poll that includes Hillary Clinton. She STILL is in the running and to deny her place in history with a poll showing how she fares while still a viable candidate is an outrage.

So is not printing my comment the first time I wrote it.

To all of the "white middle class voters", of which I am one: Please do your homework! The Republicans are NOT your friends. John McCain is NOT your friend. He, and they, are the friends of the super rich, the elite, and the corporations that are bankrupting our county- and bankrupting you.

Nate writes: "...you may have to wear some new clothes and change your religious habits before long."

Thanks, Nate. I've been concerned about the mandatory burka portion of Obama's secret agenda. Also his requirement that all Americans pray to Allah five times a day. I'm glad you enlightened us. Now, go back to your crayons and coloring book and make sure you get your morning meds.

Nate showed his idiocy when he wrote:
"unless all the books about his history are totally incorrect"

Which they are, and which even someone with the IQ of a monkey could clearly see and prove. Unfortunately, there are enough people in the U.S. like you who do no critical thinking and just believe everything that they read.

Okay three things I'd like to say.
The way the situation is being handled by the Bush administration in Georgia clearly shows that the US has lost its political authority abroad. Nicolas Sarkozy is the one who is mediating the dialogue between Russia and Georgia, people abroad see Bush as an incompetent leader and already see McCain as a continuation of his politics.

McCain has behaved in an extremist fashion going as far as claiming that we are all Georgians!! That is not something you claim when you are not President and when you dont' know that Putin is not president but prime minister.

He is using the same tactics as Bush, going as far as threatening a superpower like Russia. You don't provoke Russia when your military is at its weakest. Honestly, I am scared of the thought that McCain could become president because he clearly doesn't have the right temperament to lead and I am surprised that the press didn't reflect on that.

Remember, people thought Obama's refusal to go to war in Iraq was a sign of a lack of experience. i think the focus should be on judgement rather than the long years spent in Washington. With all due, having been a war veteran does not make you the best fit commander in chief, and its not either by going on the offensive against Russia that you will do any better.

Nicolas Sarkozy is resolving the issue without threatening or being disagreable with Russia, and that is only better. The last thing we want is another Cold War and honestly, with McCain being so unpredictable, God only knows what could happen.

I hope we will vote right this time, and hopefully its not too late to claim our status of world leader again because at this point, .....(sigh)

Hey Alessandro Hillary LOST! Stop being such a sore loser and baby. This is exactly the kind of infighting the GOP wants. If democrats don't pull their heads out of their respective butts we're going to see another 4 years of warfare, economic downturn and perhaps even the downfall of the USA. Don't let this happen intelligent Americans!!

I'd like to see the Polls, if the Media actually did their job, and started scrutinizing Senator McCain.
Anyone who hasn't decided yet, generally, aren't looking for info about the candidates. They need it in their face, in order to make a decision.
So, with Obama, Obama, Obama in their face, with most of it scrutinizing him, it's actually surprising that McCain isn't in the lead.
How about it Media... in case you've forgotten, there are two Candidates. Tell us more about McCain!

Stupid ignorant fools will always be impossible to have an intelligent conversation with. They will always counter any logical arguement with some catch phrase they have learned to parrot "Higher Taxes" squawk "You'll have to change your religious habits" squawk.
If the fools continue to out number those who actually think for themselves and read not what is just written about a person, but what that person actually writes then we are destined to another administration that will stuff their own pockets (Haliburton) while misleading our nation in to wars that sacrifice other peoples children.
Never trust someone who beats the drums for war but never (Bush, Cheney etc.) fought for our country themselves. Check your facts don't let others do it for you

Alessandro, get over your obsession with Hilary, unless you love the crash course G. Bush put this country on (490 billion dollar deficit), cuz you're effectively asking for years more of that. And if you concede to the 3rd Bush term by voting for McCain (as some kind of revenge on behalf of Hilary's ego trip), you clearly only (still) support Hilary for the fact that she's a woman. And that's your ego trip.

Nate you wrote that with Obama we'd "have to wear some new clothes and change our religious habits." What paranoid cult did you crawl out of? You are one scary man. It's the sheep like you, with your head in the sand, who devour all the empty propaganda fed to you buy Bush/McCain/Rove,their special interest buddies, the Georgia lobbyists, and the rest of their US Oil-igarchy. If you and your scary kind win, God save the US; for our days as a worldpower will be sucked away in a decade.

(We'd better obtain Nero's fiddle for McCain, so he can watch us burn from the rooftop of one of his Heiress's mansions. Yeah, the one with whom he cheated on his crippled wife. Not the actions of anyone I'd deem a "hero". By the way, how did McCain earn that silver star for heroism? Oh, he didn't earn one. Stop demeaning the term "hero" by using it on the sex-scandal, now senile, McCain. He's nobody's hero. And using that word is an insult to our real heros.)

If you and you kind remain their mindless sheep and give the McCain/Bush Oiligarchy one more victory over Americans, we''ve proven ourselves to be a country that is dumb enough to sell out all of what democracy is supposed to be. Thomas Jeffereson would be disgraced.

But in that case, you'll be getting for yourself exactly what you deserve. God help the rest of us.

Nate, If Obama is going to raise your taxes, then you must be making over $250,000 a year. Wow.... that's impressive.
But you seem against charity or "feeding the world" as you put it. That's a shame. And we we would have to change our clothes? Do you mean start wearing suits??? And change our religious habits.... I think Obama is for religious freedom, but if you also want to become a Christian, I think he'd be ok with it.... excepts Christians aren't opposed to charity.

I can't believe Obama and McCain are the best our two party system could produce. I am a lifelong Democrat that might very well be voting Republican in the upcoming election. I am not willing to help pay to expand my government even further. I donate time and money to several charities. I will not have my taxes increased to pay someone in the government to spend my money. The logical answer is tax cuts for larger corporations and high earners. They are the people that send money directly back into the economy and can cut costs on high product prices. Every time my husband and I work a little harder we seem to be taxed a little higher. I am not ashamed to admit that I want to improve my lifestyle and have the better things in life. How much more am I supposed to be willing to give?

American are smart people as well as the dumbest. This great country went from being respected to become the laughing stock in the rest of the world in short 8 yrs due to George Bush & the republican party. God help us all if Mccain gets in the office. Lets give Barack Obama a chance to restore our world standing. 4yrs.

Barack Obama claims he wants to produce ethanol form cellulose sources as well as corn, and claims that will end our food worries, but a study from three agricultural economists at Iowa State University with insider information on the latest biofuel technology says ethanol made from cellulose will likely NEVER be affordable. Switchgrass, crop waste, and wood chip biofuel schemes are too expensive to ever work!

The full study can be found here - pdf 180kb at: http://www.card.iastate.edu/publications/DBS/PDFFiles/08wp460.pdf

Coming soon after the Princeton study published in SCIENCE showing that all biofuels are far worse for the environment and global warming than gasoline leaves biofuel advocates little cover to hide behind. SEE - http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/1151861

Looks like Obama is dropping faster than a teen idol on the Urban R&B charts.

All of the polls are potentially highly biased depending on the sample. McCain is being aided by the conservative media in this country Nevertheless, is refreshing to have someone like Obama on the political front who has the native intelligence to meet heads of state with grace while abroad, and while at home discuss the economy in detail with some of the most accomplished leaders in the field. McCain has so far shown himself to be much too addled to speak with clarity on any subject including his favorite topic "The Surge" which he seems to have invented. The CBS cover-up of McCain's lapses concerning the Surge during the Couric interview is another glaring example of the tremendous anti-Obama bias. Karl Rove's minions have slimed their way into the McCain campaign. The champions of the Big Lie and Smear are now managing McCain to keep him on track and on message. They have muzzled his exchanges with reporters on his bus and cut way back on Town Hall meetings since he can't answer the questions. The economy is well beyond McCain's capacity to comprehend. After nearly 8 years of reckless and mindless Bushism, the prospect of having another intellectual lightweight like McCain in the White House is chilling to say the least. However, in a country as anti-intellectual as the United States, Obama's brains may in fact be a liability. Finally, the corporate media was in large part responsible for the success Bush had in the run up to the Iraq War. If they continue to shield from the voters a clear view of McCain's doddering state they it is further proof that independent news sources in are absent in this country
