Chuck Hagel doesn't quite back Obama/Biden, but he sure likes them

August 24, 2008 |  6:10 pm

DENVER -- During the just-concluded silly season of speculation over whom Barack Obama would select as his running mate, one of the more intriguing prospects was Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska.

It was never going to happen. True, Hagel was united with Obama -- and the Democratic left wing -- in his long-standing opposition to the war in Iraq. But on an array of other issues -- social and domestic -- Hagel's adherence to GOP orthodoxy made him a nonstarter for the Democratic rank and file.

The mere floating of his name, however, was a sign of how Hagel, who decided not to seek reelection this week, has drifted from his own party. And that drift intensified with the statement he issued today about Obama's VP decision.

"Joe Biden is the right partner for Barack Obama.  His many years of distinguished service to America, his seasoned judgment and his vast experience in foreign policy and national security will match up well with the unique challenges of the 21st century.  An Obama-Biden ticket is a very impressive and strong team.  Biden’s selection is good news for Obama and America.”

Hagel may not yet be part of the Republicans for Obama team. But it sure sounds like he's close to signing up.
