Making light of the gobs of attention showered by the news media on Barack Obama as he has traveled through the Middle East and Europe, John McCain’s campaign had some fun Tuesday.

After a late-night arrival in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., the campaign distributed phony press credentials to the media. One side bears the Statue of Liberty with the words: “McCain press corps. JV squad. Left behind to report in America.”

On the other side a squinting young man in a black-and-white-striped shirt and pink scarf (with a black beret and heavy mustache) pours wine into a glass before a shadowy image of the Eiffel Tower, with roughly the same message in (bad) French: “Le group de presse de McCain. L’equipe junior. Laisse en arriere pour faire un rapport en Amerique.”
