The Obama camp's tin ear

January 8, 2008 | 10:53 pm

Manchester, N.H. -- All credit is due CNN's Jeffrey Toobin for this observation (and his listening skills).

As he and other commentators hashed over Barack Obama's concession speech after New Hampshire Democrats staunched the surge he seemed to be riding out of Iowa, Toobin noted that the song blaring as the Illinois senator exited the stage probably had been chosen with a different outcome in mind.

The tune: Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed and Delivered."

Not quite. As Toobin noted, a quick change of script was called for.

1/08/08. remember the date when NH sealed the deal. a democrat, hillary clinton, will be the next president. her intelligence, heart, lifetime work and yes, EXPERIENCE won the day. as a minority, i have no qualms electing a black or latino or other race president. but i want true & tested leadership. i suggest obama do a lot more serving and learning before dreaming of taking the top job in the world. where's your resume????

Just an FYI - This song has been playing at all of Obama's rally's for months. It wasn't just chosen for last night.

Does Sen. Clinton include in her "35 years of experience" the eight years as first lady? The years of unelected office when she made a mess of health care, allowed her husband to run willy nilly (pun intended) in the Oval, and alienated half of the town to the point where she is as despised as she is liked? Do people really believe that she will be able to get anything done in that hostile environment?

Sen. Obama has a lifetime of real service to the community, making a real difference for real people as a community organizer and as an elected official. Clinton supporters are caught in a delusion that she has somehow accomplished more than Obama simply by association with President Clinton. They are a bitter bunch. I saw the sour faced caucus groups in Iowa, and I've seen the 47% of NH women who voted for her in NH. Senator Obama will be the next president, and will effect the change (an idea neatly aped by Sen. Clinton) that this country needs and deserves.
