So what if they gave a TV show and, as a presidential candidate, you eagerly showed up with your spouse to personally deliver your political messages to millions of female viewers. But the show’s hostess didn’t show up? So you lose.

According to The Times’ Peter Wallsten, that’s what just happened to John and Elizabeth Edwards. The Edwards campaign was delighted to get him booked on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ the other day, not just because archrival Hillary Clinton was also on recently and got such a warm reception from Ellen, but because the show reaches a large audience of potential female voters across the country.

Trouble is, Ellen didn’t show up. She’s apparently still too distraught over having her former dog repossessed from her hairdresser by the animal shelter.

Now, it’s difficult to have ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ without Ellen DeGeneres. So the taping was canceled and the Edwards couple moved on with the rest of their campaign schedule. No word on a possible rescheduling.

Good thing Ellen isn’t running for office.
