Team wins soccer playoff match with 50 penalty kicks

A two-day old high school soccer playoff match between Bishop's of La Jolla and San Diego Crawford in the San Diego Section finally ended Wednesday afternoon when Matt Harris scored on the game's 49th penalty kick, giving Bishop's the victory when Crawford missed a final try.

The Division 4 playoff match began on Tuesday and was halted because of darkness after 21 rounds of penalty kicks. Regulation had ended in a 3-3 tie.

The coaches wanted to start the game from the beginning on Wednesday, but Bishop's Coach Malcolm Tovey said the San Diego Section decided to resume the match from where it left off when darkness forced the halt.

"I think all of us were so nervous after every [penalty] kick," Harris said. "Any kick could have been the end. All of us were holding our breath."

There was so much drama and excitement over the two days.

"It was unbelievable," Tovey said.

Added Harris: "It was definitely something I've never heard of or experienced before."

The soccer match that hasn't ended

It’s the soccer match that produced so much drama and excitement that a winner couldn’t be decided.

On Tuesday in La Jolla, Crawford and Bishop’s of La Jolla played a boys’ San Diego playoff match that was tied, 3-3, after regulation.

After 21 rounds of penalty kicks, the match still wasn’t decided before the officials stopped it because of darkness.

“It was unbelievable,” Bishop’s Coach Malcolm Tovey said.

The match started at 3:30 p.m. and lasted until around 6.

“The referee decided it was too dangerous and the goalkeepers couldn’t see at the end,” Tovey said.

There were 18 successful penalty kicks and three that failed.

“I’ve never heard of anything going that far,” Tovey said. “It was a surreal experience. We had chances to win, they had chances to win.”

The coaches decided rather than resume the match on Wednesday with penalty kicks, they would start from the beginning with a new game.

“Both coaches decided they would rather settle the game on the field,” Tovey said. “There’s going to be two tired teams today. At least we’ll be able to sort it out.”
