Riverside North vs. #2 Orange Lutheran at Hart Park (Orange), 7 p.m.
Top teams: 1. Crescenta Valley (26-0), 2. Burbank (21-2), 3. Los Altos (20-5), 4. Beckman (21-6).
Dark horse: Oak Park’s Julia Rice is probably the best pitcher in the division and should keep the Eagles (20-6) in every game. Only problem, she’s been out the last two weeks with a sore shoulder. Supposedly, she's now healthy.
How it shakes out: This should be a wide open division simply because the two favorites, both from the Pacific League, are so completely untested. Crescenta Valley, for example, hasn’t played a single opponent in the Division I or II playoff field. Oak Park, Beckman and No. 5 La Serna (22-4) would be CV's toughest tests of the season. In the lower bracket, it’s hard not to like No. 6 Laguna Hills (20-6-1) or No. 7 Fullerton (21-7), though Cajon (20-6) has an offense that could prove difficult to stop.
The CIF state football championship bowl games have been expanded from three to five games for 2008, but the only one that most folks are going to care about is the new open-division game that will be played on Saturday, Dec. 20 at 8 p.m. at the Home Depot Center in Carson.
That game will match the best team in Northern California, regardless of enrollment, against its counterpart from Southern California. It's the closest thing yet to crowning a true state champion in football.
The remaining bowl games are about school pride. Only the individual schools and their fans will really care. The CIF can't even guarantee if all five games will be televised. It's negotiating a new contract after FSN's contract to televise the three bowl finals each of the last two years has expired.
With the first round of the Southern Section-Toyota Division I playoffs scheduled to start Friday, I wanted to get your thoughts as to which team will win the divisional title.
From the coaches to the players to the more than 50 fans who showed up for the team's first spring football practice, Bishop Amat is ready for an attitude adjustment.
Bishop Amat's program had fallen on hard times -- the Lancers were a combined 20-22 over the last four seasons and a disappointing 3-7 last year.
"We're tired of losing," junior linebacker and running back Brent Seals said.
The man with the task of turning the program around is Steve Hagerty, an Amat alum, who conducted his first practice as head coach on Monday.
Former Florida State quarterback Chris Rix has joined the Bishop Amat coaching staff.
The Lancers staff, which already included NFL and USC star Daylon McCutcheon as defensive coordinator, is likely to be the most star-studded staff in the Southland next season. Will that translate into more victories? Time will tell.
Here's a short video of Rix working with quarterbacks Josiah Thropay, a 6-foot-4 freshman, and Nick Lenhart, a junior.

Whether it was teamwork or sister-work, San Marino's Chreyl and Chloe Chow erased bad memories of last year's semifinals defeat by winning the Southern Section-Toyota badminton girls' doubles championship this season.
The Chows, the No. 2-seeded team in the bracket, beat top-seeded Isabel Zhong and Victoria Bundy of Mira Costa, 15-4, 11-15, 15-1, in the finals at the Orange County Badminton Club on Saturday.
We're through two rounds of the Southern Section-Toyota Division I playoffs and each of the top four seeded teams are still alive. On Tuesday's slate are two particularly intriguing quarterfinals.
The first pits No. 5 Harvard-Westlake against No. 4 Peninsula in a rematch of a regular-season meeting won by Peninsula. In the other, second-seeded and unbeaten Santa Barbara should get its first real test from a Thousand Oaks squad that features a formidable singles trio in Kyle McMorrow, Denis Lin and Marcos Giron.
Reigning champion and top-seeded Irvine University is rolling along, having won 35 of 36 sets so far, and will be a heavy favorite to eliminate Troy and advance to the semifinals. Third-seeded Mater Dei, which has lost only to University, must knock off Dana Hills to set up a final four showdown against the Thousand Oaks-Santa Barbara winner.
The Newhall Hart girls’ swimming team opened the Southern Section-Toyota Division II finals in record-breaking fashion and ended it as team champion.
The Indians scored 207.50 points at the Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach, easily outdistancing runner-up Westlake, which had 165. Flintridge Sacred Heart was third with 139.
Hart won the meet-opening 200-yard medley relay in 1 minute 47.81 seconds, surpassing the previous meet record of 1:48.59 set by Corona del Mar three years ago. Sophomore Maggie Hanson led off, followed by junior Jordan Danny, senior Rachael Krager and junior Rachael Stoffel.
A pair of brothers and sisters took home the Southern Section-Toyota badminton individual boys' and girls' doubles titles at the Orange County Badminton Club.
The top-seeded duo of Calvin and Marvin Lin of Villa Park won their second consecutive boys' title by beating the second-seeded team of Derrick Poon and Hy Ia of Alhambra, 17-16, 15-13. Poon and Ia were up, 14-5, in the first game, but the Lins rattled off nine unanswered points to tie the score. They used the momentum they gained to win the match.
The second-seeded team of Cheryl and Chloe Chow of San Marino upset the top-seeded team of Isabel Zhong and Victoria Bundy of Mira Costa, 15-4, 11-15, 15-1, to win the girls' title.
When it comes to team efforts, few can keep up with the Westlake Village Oaks Christian boys’ swim team. The Lions set meet records in the 200-yard medley and 200 freestyle relays at the Southern Section-Toyota Division IV finals Saturday afternoon at the Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach, giving the program all three meet relay records in only its second year in the division.
Oaks Christian broke the 400 free relay mark last season en route to setting a meet record with 419 points.
The Lions came close to matching that mark on Saturday, winning six of eight individual events and all three relays to help bolster their winning point total to 377. Cerritos finished a distant second with 169 points.
Here's a quick look at some of the more notable performances to come out of the final hours of the Southern Section-Toyota Division II preliminaries at Moorpark:
For the last two hours, people have been poking their heads into the press box and asking if we had the boys' and girls' 3,200-meter results. Well, consider yourselves lucky to find out Rex Nelson of Newport Harbor posted an impressive time of 9 minutes 18.52 seconds -- more than six seconds faster than his seeding time. Whittier's Luis Dorantes was second (9:19.12) and James Kostelnik of Loyola qualified third (9:20.78).
Hacienda Heights Wilson junior Qiu-Ming Wu, pictured, is playing in the quarterfinals of the Southern Section-Toyota badminton individual championships today, but the fact that she is playing anywhere is a testament to her strength.
Wu and the rest of the school's badminton team were rattled and became extremely fearful, Coach Rex Lin said. The team members have put the ordeal behind them -- "time heals everything," he said -- but, "people should come down here and support her. The entire team has been through a lot."
Wu is Wilson's best chance at winning a title. The junior is the No. 2-seeded player in girls' singles and is on track to play top-seeded Thuy Hoang of Garden Grove in the final. Hoang, a junior, just advanced by beating Baldwin Park's Simone Truong, 11-0, 11-2, in less than 10 minutes.

[UPDATE: Wu lost to Hoang in the finals, 11-1, 6-11, 11-4. The second game win by Wu was Hoang's only loss the entire day.]
Saugus freshman Kaylin Mahoney dominated the 1,600 meters at the Southern Section-Toyota Division I preliminaries, then she turned her attention to the 3,200 and did the same thing.
Mahoney pulled away from Crescenta Valley senior Claire Collison over the last 300 meters and clocked a meet-best time of 10 minutes 41.93 seconds. Collison finished in 10:47.41.
Mahoney's best time of the season is 10:31.86, which she ran at the Arcadia Invitational. It was the state's fifth-best time coming into the day. She looks as if she's going to be a great talent over the next few years.
Alexandra Dunne, a San Clemente junior, dominated her heat and ran a 10:49.39 to qualify third.
One of the biggest surprises of the boys' 300-meter hurdles at the Southern Section-Toyota Division I preliminaries at Trabuco Hills was the failure of Fountain Valley's Kevin Jones to advance.
Jones was the winner at the Orange County Championships. Although he finished in 39.75 seconds, he was only 14th in the field on Saturday.
The winner of each of five heats, and the next four fastest times, advanced.
The top qualifier was Cameron Stepney, a senior at San Gorgonio who clocked 38.34 seconds, just a tad quicker than Walnut senior Cordell Almond's 38.44.
At the Division III Southern Section-Toyota preliminaries, here are a few more top performers, whom I don't want to skip over...
Orange Lutheran's Sam Delgado clocked a first-place 1:55.68 in the boys' 800 meters, edging out Servite's Mike Villasin, who ran a 1:56.33.
One of the day's closest battles was between El Segundo's Allison Reaser and Santa Margarita's Kelly Collins in the 300-meter hurdles. Reaser won with a time of 44.54 seconds, beating Collins by one-tenth of a second. Can't wait to see these two standouts compete at the championship.
Corona del Mar's Shelby Buckley ran a 2:17.18 to win the girls' 800 meters, edging out a dynamic freshman, Palos Verdes' Erica Capellino, who clocked a 2:17.27.
I love using the word bespectacled. So get ready, here it comes.
The bespectacled Lindsay Cooper, a Muir junior, had her competition squinting at her back as she won the girls' 100 meters in 12.13 seconds at the Southern Section-Toyota Division III preliminaries at Warren.
Still, Cooper left the track shaking her head, saying: "I wanted to go 11.8."
Karynn Dunn just did it again -- she won another event at the Southern Section-Toyota Division III prelimianries at Warren.
The Diamond Ranch junior first won the long jump, shook off the sand and hit the rubberized track. She took a few deep breaths and a couple of moments to stretch, then the gun popped and she just dominated the 100-meter hurdles. Her winning time was 14.93 seconds.
"I like coming here from the long jump," Dunn said. "My body is already warm."
Does it surprise anyone that Claremont's Kori Carter finished as the top qualifier in the 100-meter hurdles? Well, it shouldn't because Carter had the fifth-fastest time in the state before she posted her 13.93 at Saturday's Southern Section Division II preliminaries.
Still, as fast as Carter was in the 100, her best event is the 300-meter hurdles. Her time of 41.58 seconds in the 300 is the fastest in the state this season and it'll be interesting to see how close she gets to that mark later this afternoon.
Competition is underway at the Southern Section-Toyota individual badminton championships today at the Orange County Badminton Club in Orange.
Up first are the girls. The favorite to win in singles is Garden Grove's Thuy Hoang, who's the top-seeded player. Hoang, a junior, is looking for her first career singles title after losing to La Quinta's Jamie Subandhi in the finals the last two years. Hoang won her first career high school title Thursday when she paired up with Thinh Nghi to take the mixed-doubles championship.
Some of the boys' singles players are passing the time playing cards. Others are eating yogurt or talking with teammates.
Call her "Air Dunn" -- no delays, no layovers, just a smooth transcontinental flight.
I'm being too cutesy. Just call Dunn awesome.
Dunn, a junior at Diamond Ranch, nailed the day's best in the girls' long jump -- at 20 feet, nearly breaking the 17-year-old Division III record of 20-1.75. I felt as if I needed to remind Dunn: Yo, Karynn, this is only the prelims. The kid knows that, of course, as she said with a quick grin: "I'm just trying to qualify."
Dunn is qualifying pretty easily too, and that's because she's one of the top talents here at the Southern Section-Toyota Division III preliminaries.
Up next for Dunn, the 100-meter hurdles, in which she's rated as the fourth best in the state.
There's good and bad news from the guys down on the field at the Southern Section-Toyota Division II preliminaries:
First, we're more than 30 minutes behind schedule thanks to problems with the timing computer. The girls participating in the 400-meter relay were called away from the starting blocks after waiting in place for about 10 minutes and are sitting in the infield (see photo). There's murmurs the redcoats might resort to stopwatches!
Fortunately, the same radio communication from the field informed the press box that complimentary sandwiches were on the way up. At least the event organizers are doing everything they can to make the media happy. And they should since it looks as if we're going to be here for a while.
I just arrived in Moorpark for the Southern Section Division II preliminaries and I'm pretty stoked I found a parking lot with relative ease. Of course, I arrived more than an hour ahead of the scheduled start of the running events, so maybe that had something to do with it.
Anyway, once the results start pouring in, I'll be sure to let you know who's advancing to next week's divisional championship meet. The top nine performers/teams in each event move on.
The field events have already started, and I managed to snap a shot of Torrance discus thrower Esther Uini.

Michael Avery, the eighth-grade basketball player who gained national attention on May 1 by announcing he had committed to Kentucky before selecting a high school, has decided to enroll at Encino Crespi. Avery was also considering attending a boarding school in Indiana.
Avery, who is officially registered at Crespi, is a 6-foot-4 guard who lives in Thousand Oaks and has strengths as a shooter, dribbler and hard worker. But his decision to make such an early commitment has raised expectations and created a whole new dynamic for everyone involved.
"I hope the hoopla will disappear after he's at Crespi and with his teammates," Crespi Coach Russell White said Saturday. "I realize this is a new situation for me and my staff. I've got to focus on getting him acclimated and accepted to our program for who he is."
Right now, Crescenta Valley feels good about having outlasted Arcadia in eight innings. And Arcadia feels bad about having lost such a close game on a bases-loaded walk.
"But years from now both teams will be able to look back and realized that they've been part of one of the best CV-Arcadia games," Crescenta Valley Coach Phill Torres said. "They can take that with them. No one can ever take that away."
Crescenta Valley beat Arcadia, 2-1, with a game-ending walk in the 8th inning to capture another Pacific League title.
Unbelievable finish to a great game. Somewhat anti-climatic, but entertaining, nonetheless.
Senior Drew Elliot scored the winning run and younger brother Sean got the win. Sean struck out two in two-thirds of an inning of relief in the top of the eighth.
Arcadia pitcher Bryce Rutherford finished with eight strikeouts having only given up five hits in seven innings.
Christopher Holmes has been named the new girls' basketball coach at Diamond Bar. Although he was a head coach for the Nogales boys for two seasons, he most notably was an assistant on the boys' basketball team at Artesia when it won a state title in 2007.
He was an assistant for the Diamond Bar boys last season.
Arcadia took the lead on double by David Huntzinger to break a scoreless tie with Crescenta Valley.
With one out and sophomore Jon Larson at first, Huntzinger ripped a first-pitch fastball down the left field line that went into the corner of the outfield. Crescenta Valley's shortstop alertly tried to slow down Larson at second, by running in front of him, but Larson kept on going and beat the throw to home.
Heading into the bottom of the fourth, it's Arcadia 1, Crescenta Valley 0.
I'm here at Casey Stengel Field for the Arcadia-Crescenta Valley Pacific League "championship game" and it's CV fan appreciation night. The announcer, to my right, is reading raffle ticket winners in between innings and the booster club, to my left, pictured, is giving away goodie bags. Just another reason to come to Glendale to check out the game.
CV came closes to scoring in the first inning but left the bases loaded. The Falcons loaded the bases again in the second inning, with one out, but Arcadia's Bryce Rutherford struck out two to get out of the inning unharmed.
Arcadia (15-9, 11-2) and Crescenta Valley (17-5, 11-2) will battle for first place in the Pacific League, bragging rights and playoff seeding at 7 tonight at Casey Stengel Field.
On the mound for Arcadia will be Bryce Rutherford (7-2), who's only a junior but is the Apaches' best player, some coaches tell me. On top of 92 strikeouts in 56 innings, Rutherford has a batting average of .359 and is second on the team with 18 RBIs.
Crescenta Valley, I'm told, is a deeper team than Arcadia, and is better all around but that may not matter much for one game. If Rutherford is on his game, there may be nothing the Falcons can do.
They've only played one other time this season, a 2-0 affair that Crescenta Valley won on April 4. Rutherford was on the mound for that one and took the loss, despite striking out 11.

Gary Bernard Park was introduced as Blair's new football coach today/Friday by Athletic Director Gamal Smalley. A quarterbacks coach at Verbum Dei, Parks replaces Lavell Sanders, who resigned three weeks ago.
The school also has promoted Andrea Richardson to girls' volleyball coach. Richardson was an assistant on the team last year after having graduated from Cal State Los Angeles.
Park is inheriting a program that finished 9-2 and was the Rio Hondo League co-champion last season.

The Southern Section-Toyota track and field championship division preliminaries will take place on Saturday and I thought I'd pass along the entry lists for each of the respective divisions:
OK, I gotta say this. When the Southern Section-Toyota Division I swimming preliminaries can't start on time because not enough people have "volunteered" as timers, something's wrong.
Granted, more "official" people are probably needed at a big swimming event like this (three timers for each of eight lanes plus the officials) than for most other sports, but not to have these folks already in place and ready to go days before the start of Wednesday's meet seems irresponsible on somebody's part.
How classy is it when the PA announcer has to tell the audience, repeatedly, that "if you don't want to stare at the empty pool, then we need volunteers"?
Perhaps each of the participating schools could be asked to supply one designated timer well ahead of time, rather than forcing a "championship" event to go begging.

For the second consecutive year, the girls' Division II diving title remained a family affair. However, there was a slightly younger flair to this spring's result.
A year after Pasadena Poly's Felicitas and Cosima Lenz finished 1-2 in the divisional championships, younger sister Cosima edged out her junior sibling by four points to claim the Division II title at Westlake HS on Tuesday afternoon.
Cosima, a sophomore, had a couple of amazing dives early on to take the lead and managed to stay ahead for the entire event despite a strong comeback in the late rounds by Felicitas. In the end, Cosima finished with 547.05 points and her older sister came in at 544.
I spoke too soon in my previous post. After jumping out to a 5-0 lead, Bishop Amat got comfortable and was barely able to beat last-place St. Monica, 8-7, on Tuesday.
"They just thought [St. Monica] would roll over," after getting a big lead, Bishop Amat coach Andy Nieto said of his players. "But St. Monica has pride. They play hard and they played hard for seven innings."
Amat (21-4, 11-0), ranked No. 19 in the Southland by The Times, lost its focus in this one. Three errors in the fourth and fifth innings allowed St. Monica (4-16-1, 1-10) to tie the score at 6-6.
La Canada's John Geyer became only the seventh diver in Southern Section history to capture three consecutive divisional titles when he scored a championship-winning mark of 592.60 at the Division II championships Tuesday.
Unfortunately, Geyer was a tad bit disappointed he couldn't beat the division record of 640.95 set by his Trojan Dive Club coach, Louis Gagnet, in 2001. But Geyer shouldn't be too upset since he still has a chance to best the mark next year.
But no matter what happens, Geyer has to be considered the frontrunner for the Masters' Meet title and, next spring, he'll probably become only the second diver in section history to win four divisional titles.
Here's a quick interview with the diving master himself:
Go here for complete results from the Division II boys' diving championships.
Bishop Amat's Jordan Fox has accepted a scholarship offer from UC Irvine, Amat coach Andy Nieto confirmed today/Tuesday.
The senior first baseman had his 16th multi-hit game of the season earlier on the day as Amat remained unbeaten in the Del Rey League by beating St. Monica, 8-7. He comes into the week carrying a batting average of .541.
Fox is the second Lancer to commit to UCI this season, shortstop Tommy Reyes accepted an offer from the Anteaters last month.
