Baseball: Rio Ruiz gets dialed in at Area Code Games

Bishop Amat third baseman Rio Ruiz, who had missed the Milwaukee Brewers' first game in the Area Code Games to be with the Lancers football team, made his debut with the Southern California-laden Brewers on Sunday at Blair Field in Long Beach and did not disappoint.

After entering to play third base in the sixth inning, Ruiz had a pair of hits, including one that started a two-run, ninth-inning rally. Alas, it wasn't enough as the Brewers lost, 12-7, to the Kansas City Royals.

Keeping the two-sport standout around for the entirety of the Area Code Games has been a challenge. Last year, Ruiz played in the first two days of the event for the New York Yankees and then left to focus on playing quarterback for Bishop Amat.

This year, he missed the first two days (but only one game) and told ESPN Rise that he would stay until the games end Wednesday.

Timothy Lopes leads Milwaukee Brewers to victory in Area Code Games

Edison senior Timothy Lopes went two for two with a walk and a run batted in to lead the Southern California-stocked Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-2 victory over the New York Yankees in their opening game of the Area Code Games on Saturday at Blair Field in Long Beach.

The Brewers broke open a tie score with two runs in the fourth inning and then relied on their strong pitching the rest of the way. Pitching across the street from his high school, Long Beach Wilson right-hander Chase De Jong pitched two perfect innings, striking out four. UCLA-bound left-hander Max Fried pitched two solid innings.

Placentia El Dorado's Kyle Twomey pitched a scoreless inning before La Verne Bonita's Justin Garza completed the final two innings.

Tanner Rahier, who attends Palm Desert but plays for an amateur wood bat league during the high school season, received the Jose Bautista "Beastmode" Award after making the defensive play of the game. Rahier turned an unconventional double play by tagging out a runner attempting to steal second base and then throwing home to get a runner attempting to score from third base. He also doubled and scored a run.

Another offensive hero for the Brewers was Upland senior Daniel Robertson, who tripled and scored on a single by Ron Miller of Gardena Serra. The Brewers play the Royals at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in a game scheduled to run nine innings, two longer than normal.

Attempt by CIF to get approval for new statewide TV contract is in trouble

The Sac-Joaquin Section has become the latest section to reject a statewide TV contract proposed by the CIF, after Sac-Joaquin's Board of Managers voted on the matter last week. The Southern Section also is on the record as opposing the proposal.

Will DeBoard, director of communications for the Sac-Joaquin Section, said the CIF proposal involves more than just a statewide TV contract for state playoffs and also includes section events, and that's where the CIF could be running into trouble. Also, he said schools in his section haven't been given the chance to offer their opinions on the proposal.

Marie Ishida, the CIF executive director, has declined comment, saying the TV contract is being negotiated. Southern Section representatives have also declined comment, saying Ishida has instructed them not to discuss the contract proposal.

What's interesting is that the Board of Managers for the Sac-Joaquin Section authorized its commissioner and staff to negotiate broadcast rights for the section if anyone is interested, so it appears the sections and the state CIF are on a collision course concerning who's going to control TV revenue and TV access to schools.

Coaches fired for using ineligible player

From the I-can't-believe-file comes this story from the Chino Hills Champion weekly newspaper.

Chino Hills High has fired its boys' tennis coaches after learning that a seventh-grader played in varsity matches.

Question: What tipped off people that the kid might be ineligible?

Did he have a mustache? Did his voice keep changing? Did he listen to too much Justin Bieber music?

And the CIF video winner is . . .

Antioch Deer Valley High School has won the CIF video competition in producing a positive video about high school sports.

Runner-up was El Diamante High.
