Baseball: No. 1 seeds Mater Dei, Bonita and Paraclete all lose

Marina-baseball

There were so many breaking news stories on Thursday regarding the opening round of the Southern Section baseball playoffs that one story hardly is enough.

Three No. 1 seeded teams -- Mater Dei in Division 1, Bonita in Division 3 and Paraclete in Division 5 --  went down to defeat. Noah Davis threw a three-hitter in Huntington Beach's 2-1 win over Mater Dei. Marcus Mayorga had three hits. L.A. Cathedral knocked off Bonita, 3-1.  Sun Valley Village Christian defeated Paraclete, 4-3, in eight innings.

In Division 1, four Sunset League teams advanced: Fountain Valley, Marina, Huntington Beach and Los Alamitos. Three teams advanced from the Mission League: Harvard-Westlake, Chaminade and Loyola. And three teams advanced from the Marmonte League: Moorpark, Agoura and Thousand Oaks.

Ace pitcher Sean Barry of Moorpark looked like Sandy Koufax, striking out the first 11 batters he faced and finishing with 15 strikes in a 4-0 victory over Arlington.

Marina pulled out a 2-1 win over Norco on a bases loaded walk-off single by Tyler Mildenberg in the bottom of the seventh.

The powerful Trinity League is down to one team in the Division 1 playoffs _ Santa Margarita, which defeated Corona Santiago, 7-1. Josh Meyer had three hits. Orange Lutheran was upset by Chaminade, 4-2, with Kevin Lewallyn, Chad Gubicza and Dylan Suppan combining on a six-hitter.

El Dorado needed a one-hitter for 6 1/3 innings from Scott Serigstad and then closer Christian Rivera to record to two outs to end the prep career of Stanford-bound Chris Castellanos of Long Beach Poly, 1-0.

No. 2-seeded El Toro needed a walk-off single from Sam Clark in the eighth inning to defeat Long Beach Wilson, 2-1, in eight innings.

Fountain Valley got a two-hitter from Monty Plattner in an 8-0 win over Alemany. Jacob Nix threw a complete game in Los Alamitos' 6-5 win over West Ranch. Gianni Castillo had a two-run triple for Los Alamitos. Tyler Woldanski hit a two-run home run for West Ranch.

Thousand Oaks eliminated No. 4-seeded Anaheim Canyon, 9-4. Rick Sheehan had two hits and two RBIs. Tyler Cohen hit two home runs and Kyle London had a home run and double in Agoura's 12-5 win over Sherman Oaks Notre Dame.

Drew Traylor had a walk-off hit in the eighth to give Riverside Poly a 4-3 win over Capistrano Valley. Alex Horowitz hit a three-run home run and Jack Flaherty struck out nine in Harvard-Westlake's 7-1 win over Valencia.

Loyola defeated Canyon Country Canyon, 8-5, behind Angelo Armenta, who went three for three, including a home run.

Volleyball: It's a Loyola-Huntington Beach Division 1 final [Video]

It was a wild semifinal night in Southern Section Division 1 volleyball, but when Wednesday's matches were over, Los Angeles Loyola and Huntington Beach came away with victories to advance to Saturday's 7:30 p.m. championship match at Santiago Canyon College in Orange.

Huntington Beach (30-2) upset No. 1-seeded Manhattan Beach Mira Costa, 25-23, 29-27, 25-23.

At a noisy Loyola gym, the Cubs moved into position to deliver a sixth section title to Coach Michael Boehle with a 30-28, 22-25, 28-26, 35-33 victory over San Clemente. Cubs players were singing, "Happy Birthday" to Boehle, who turned 47.

Ohio State-bound Garrett Mohr had a huge match for the Cubs, recording 22 kills. Jackson Bantle had 16 kills and 6-foot-7 Cole Paullin contributed seven blocks. San Clemente received strong play from Jack Yoder and Garrett Costello.

The fourth set was full of drama. Neither team was budging. There were repeated rallies until San Clemente made a hitting error to end the match.
