
There were so many breaking news stories on Thursday regarding the opening round of the Southern Section baseball playoffs that one story hardly is enough.
Three No. 1 seeded teams -- Mater Dei in Division 1, Bonita in Division 3 and Paraclete in Division 5 -- went down to defeat. Noah Davis threw a three-hitter in Huntington Beach's 2-1 win over Mater Dei. Marcus Mayorga had three hits. L.A. Cathedral knocked off Bonita, 3-1. Sun Valley Village Christian defeated Paraclete, 4-3, in eight innings.
In Division 1, four Sunset League teams advanced: Fountain Valley, Marina, Huntington Beach and Los Alamitos. Three teams advanced from the Mission League: Harvard-Westlake, Chaminade and Loyola. And three teams advanced from the Marmonte League: Moorpark, Agoura and Thousand Oaks.
Ace pitcher Sean Barry of Moorpark looked like Sandy Koufax, striking out the first 11 batters he faced and finishing with 15 strikes in a 4-0 victory over Arlington.

El Dorado needed a one-hitter for 6 1/3 innings from Scott Serigstad and then closer Christian Rivera to record to two outs to end the prep career of Stanford-bound Chris Castellanos of Long Beach Poly, 1-0.
No. 2-seeded El Toro needed a walk-off single from Sam Clark in the eighth inning to defeat Long Beach Wilson, 2-1, in eight innings.
Fountain Valley got a two-hitter from Monty Plattner in an 8-0 win over Alemany. Jacob Nix threw a complete game in Los Alamitos' 6-5 win over West Ranch. Gianni Castillo had a two-run triple for Los Alamitos. Tyler Woldanski hit a two-run home run for West Ranch.
Thousand Oaks eliminated No. 4-seeded Anaheim Canyon, 9-4. Rick Sheehan had two hits and two RBIs. Tyler Cohen hit two home runs and Kyle London had a home run and double in Agoura's 12-5 win over Sherman Oaks Notre Dame.
Drew Traylor had a walk-off hit in the eighth to give Riverside Poly a 4-3 win over Capistrano Valley. Alex Horowitz hit a three-run home run and Jack Flaherty struck out nine in Harvard-Westlake's 7-1 win over Valencia.
Loyola defeated Canyon Country Canyon, 8-5, behind Angelo Armenta, who went three for three, including a home run.
