Basketball: Good matchups at State Preview Classic

There will be plenty of compelling matchups Jan. 30 at Fairfax during the State Preview Classic, which features one girls' game and five boys' games. Here's the lineup:

Noon--Fairfax girls vs. North Torrance girls

1:30 p.m.--Windward vs. La Canada

3 p.m.--Campbell Hall vs. Oceanside El Camino

4:30 p.m.--Santa Monica vs. Torrey Pines

6:30 p.m.--Crenshaw vs. Price

8 p.m.--Taft vs. Gardena Serra

Eight inducted into Southern Section Hall of Fame

Eight former coaches were inducted into the CIF Southern Section Hall of Fame on Thursday.

They include Mike Bartee, who coached boys' basketball at Riverside North; Daniel Hirsch, former cross country coach at Buena Park; Eleanor Dykstra, former girls' basketball coach at Cerritos Valley Christian; Dwayne DeSpain, former football coach at Los Altos; John Draghi, former gymnastics coach at Baldwin Park; John Herbold, former baseball coach at Long Beach Poly and Lakewood; Jan Most, former swim coach at Mission Viejo, and Ron Palmer, former boys' basketball coach at Long Beach Poly.

Cross country: New timing system for state meet

The state cross country championships on Nov. 28 at Woodward Park in Fresno will use a Chip Timing system for the first time.

It requires athletes to wear a small chip on the shoelace or on an ankle bracelet. The chip helps identify runners at strategically placed electronic mats on the course.

A sponsorship by Nike made possible use of the Chip Timing system.

Football: Kaiser's Shirley receives bowl jersey

Corona Kaiser standout linebacker Josh Shirley received his jersey for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl earlier today during a ceremony at the school.

Shirley will play in the game Jan. 9 at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Shirley is being recruited by USC, UCLA, Arizona, Washington, Stanford, Oregon, California and Tennessee, among others.

Football: Powell receives bowl jersey

Rancho Verde senior linebacker Ronald Powell received his jersey for the 2010 U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Tuesday in a ceremony at the school in which the Golden Knights parachute team dropped in the jersey.

"It's a great honor to be playing in this game," Powell said. "Not just for me but also for my school. ... It's overwhelming."

The game, which will be played Jan. 9 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, is in its 10th year and has featured eventual Heisman Trophy winners Reggie Bush and Tim Tebow.

"The greatest have played in this game and hopefully I'll be one of the greatest," Powell said. "It's an honor to play in this game and represent me and my family."

The U.S. Army selection tour will make stops at Corona on Tuesday to honor an undisclosed bowl participant and Taft on Wednesday to honor running back D.J. Morgan, who has also been selected to participate.

Softball: New pitching rule for 2011

The CIF has decided to wait one year before implementing a new national rule that moves back the pitching distance from 40 to 43 feet for softball. It will take effect for the 2011 high school season in California.

Football: Kaiser's Shirley honored next week

Fontana Kaiser senior linebacker Josh Shirley will be honored on campus a week from today as part of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Selection Tour.

A pep rally will be held at 11:43 a.m. Oct. 5 at the high school, where Shirley will be presented with his jersey for the all-star game Jan. 9 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
