Timothy Lopes leads Milwaukee Brewers to victory in Area Code Games

Edison senior Timothy Lopes went two for two with a walk and a run batted in to lead the Southern California-stocked Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-2 victory over the New York Yankees in their opening game of the Area Code Games on Saturday at Blair Field in Long Beach.

The Brewers broke open a tie score with two runs in the fourth inning and then relied on their strong pitching the rest of the way. Pitching across the street from his high school, Long Beach Wilson right-hander Chase De Jong pitched two perfect innings, striking out four. UCLA-bound left-hander Max Fried pitched two solid innings.

Placentia El Dorado's Kyle Twomey pitched a scoreless inning before La Verne Bonita's Justin Garza completed the final two innings.

Tanner Rahier, who attends Palm Desert but plays for an amateur wood bat league during the high school season, received the Jose Bautista "Beastmode" Award after making the defensive play of the game. Rahier turned an unconventional double play by tagging out a runner attempting to steal second base and then throwing home to get a runner attempting to score from third base. He also doubled and scored a run.

Another offensive hero for the Brewers was Upland senior Daniel Robertson, who tripled and scored on a single by Ron Miller of Gardena Serra. The Brewers play the Royals at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in a game scheduled to run nine innings, two longer than normal.
