Boys' basketball: Mater Dei romps, 88-55

March 9, 2009 |  8:21 pm

With the possibility of his team playing four games in six days, Mater Dei Coach Gary McKnight substituted liberally as the No. 3-seeded Monarchs (31-1) cruised to an 88-55 victory over Chino Hills in a first-round game of the Division I Southern California Regional playoffs at Mater Dei.

Tyler Lamb and Travis Wear scored 19 points apiece, Gary Franklin Jr. had 18 and David Wear 16. Chino Hills (25-8) scored the game’s first basket on a three-pointer by Michael Rodriguez.

Mater Dei then went on a 20-0 run. Mater Dei will be the home team in a doubleheader Tuesday night, with its girls’ team playing at 6 p.m. and the boys’ team at 7:30.

McKnight changed his starting lineup, removing Connor Hughes and replacing him with another guard, Michael Pierce. It was a response to the Monarchs' 71-56 loss to Riverside King on Saturday and an attempt to change things up.

Boys' basketball: Price holds on for victory

March 5, 2009 | 10:04 pm

Boys' basketball: Desert Christian pulls out amazing comeback victory

March 5, 2009 |  7:49 pm

Trailing by 20 points midway through the fourth quarter, Desert Christian put together one of the most improbable comebacks in Southern Section championship history, pulling out a 54-49 victory over Tarbut V'Torah tonight at Ontario Colony High in Division VI-AA.

Top-seeded Desert Christian scored 33 points in the fourth quarter after scoring 21 in the first three combined. The Conquerors had trailed, 47-27, midway through the fourth before beginning their comeback. The rally seemed especially improbable considering second-seeded Tarbut V'Torah had put together a 20-0 run of its own to end the third quarter and start the fourth.

It was another heart-breaking ending for Tarbut V'Torah, the tiny Irvine school whose administrators forfeited a playoff game in 2000 when they refused to let the team travel in the wake of heavy rain. This was the Lions' first appearance in a championship game.
