The 40-man roster of players to try out for the USA 18U Team Trials in August in Los Angeles was announced Sunday in Cary, N.C.
Players competed in the Tournament of the Stars.
Making the cut from Southern California were Jack Flaherty of Harvard-Westlake, Denz'l Chapman of Gardena Serra, Quinn Brodey of Loyola, Griffin Canning of Santa Margarita, Scott Hurst of Bishop Amat and Jacob Nix of Los Alamitos.
Pitcher Quinn Brodey of Loyola struck out five in two innings of relief to help his Babe Ruth team defeat RBI, 3-0, at the Tournament of the Stars in Cary, N.C.
On Sunday, he will find out if he is among 40 players who make the cut to continue tryouts in Los Angeles in August for the USA 18U team. Brodey will be a senior this fall. He is committed to Stanford.
Gardena Serra's Denz'l Chapman had two stolen bases for RBI. Fountain Valley's Brock Lundquist had a triple and single for Babe Ruth.
Ryan McMahon, the former Mater Dei third baseman who was a second-round draft pick of the Colorado Rockies, had a triple and single in his professional debut on Thursday night for the Grand Junction Rockies of the Pioneer League.
Also on his team is former Palm Desert standout Ryan Garvey, who had two hits, including a double.
At the Tournament of the Stars competition in Cary, N.C., on Wednesday, Santa Margarita pitcher Griffin Canning got the victory, striking out three in two innings of relief, to help his Babe Ruth team defeat Dixie, 4-2.
Canning, a UCLA commit, is among local players competing for a spot on the USA 18U national team. Also playing is Jack Flaherty from Harvard-Westlake, a North Carolina commit.
Blake Rutherford, who will be a sophomore outfielder at West Hills Chaminade this fall, has committed to UCLA. He started this season as a freshman. He's highly regarded for his speed and potential as a hitter. He also plays receiver for the football team.
