Football: Hart vs. Alemany in 11 on 11 summer fun [Video]
Hart and Alemany, each coached by a Herrington brother (Mike at Hart, Dean at Alemany), engaged in an 11 on 11 football scrimmage without pads and without tackling on Wednesday night at Valencia.
It is so much better than a seven on seven passing competition, but it comes down to trust to pull it off.
The coaches have to trust each other that they’ll get their players to play hard without taking cheap shots or letting their competitive instincts take over and do something silly.
The players have to trust each other that it’s touch football, not tackle, and being too aggressive trying to show off isn’t going to be acceptable.
The players and coaches pulled it off, which made it fun and enjoyable to see how the teams could perform with linemen and a little blocking.
Both schools have some big-time offensive threats. For Alemany, running back Dominic Davis and receiver Desean Holmes will score lots of touchdowns in the fall. Quarterback Alif Graves has some running ability. For Hart, the passing combination of quarterback Brady White and receiver Trent Irwin is going to join the great duos of the past.
One development for Hart is that standout basketball point guard Myles Franklin, a junior, was on the field playing safety. He's never played football in high school. He's one of the best athletes at Hart, so it will be interesting to see if he sticks with football. He had an interception.
There’s also linemen ready to make an impact.
Now, if only other schools and coaches can gain each other's trust, more teams can join the 11 on 11 fun.
