City Section baseball: Van Nuys wins Division II championship [Video]

June 1, 2013 | 12:11 pm

A bases loaded walk with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning pushed across the winning run and gave Van Nuys a 5-4 win over San Fernando Chavez in the City Section Division II championship game on Saturday at Dodger Stadium.

Chavez had taken a 4-3 lead in the top of the eighth on an RBI single by Patrick Lopez with none out and the bases loaded. But Van Nuys' Raul Pacheco was inserted into the game out of the bullpen and got three consecutive outs to give his team the chance to win.

Abdon Orozco led off the bottom of the eighth with a single. Gerardo Macias reached base on a bunt. After a force out, Jaime Alcala got a single to load the bases off Eduardo Ayon. Ruben Pineda's RBI single tied the game. Then Eduardo Negrete drew a game-ending walk.

Chavez had tied the game in the top of the seventh after a dropped fly ball and wild pitch.

For Van Nuys (17-9), Pineda had three hits and made a diving catch in center field. Brian Crespin and Orozco had two hits apiece. For Chavez (9-15), Justin Lopez went three for three.

It's the first City title for Van Nuys since 1959.
