Boys' basketball: Crespi, ECR battle it out in a game with lots of stars [Video]
It was only a summer basketball game, but Encino Crespi and Woodland Hills El Camino Real engaged in an entertaining battle on Friday in the Crespi tournament. Crespi prevailed, 66-65, when the Conquistadores had an errant pass with 1.8 seconds left trying to get the go-ahead basket.
There was lots of good things both teams took away from the game.
DJ Ursery had 25 points for Crespi. He has become a versatile player for the Celts. Sophomore Max Heidegger, despite facing strong defense from El Camino Real's determined Kelton Conway, had 20 points. He's going to have to get used to opponents guarding him so close they want to know the flavor of the gum he's chewing. And sophomore De'Anthony Melton had 16 rebounds and eight points for the Celts.
For El Camino Real, which played without All-City guard Julian Richardson (camp), Conway had a moster performance. Besides his strong defense, he finished with 32 points. Josiah Woods, a JV player last season, made four three-pointers and should help replace Mason Pollock. One disappointing note was the inconsistent outside shooting from Evan Wardlow and Maleke Haynes, veteran players from last season's City Section Division I runner-up team.
