There are some very fast young track and field sprinters. Upland sophomore Myles Valentine qualified first at the Southern Section Division 1 track and field prelims in the 100 meters in a wind-aided time of 10.36 seconds.

In the shotput, Nick Ponzio of Great Oak won with a mark of 65-5 1/2. Junior Kelsey Benoit of San Clemente was second in 62-6 3/4.

Arianna Washington of Long Beach Poly qualified first in the girls’ 100 (11.56) and 200 (24.01).

One athlete who did not advance was sprinter Elijah Mitchell of Eastvale Roosevelt. A 200 state finalist last season, he pulled up in his 200 heat with a hamstring injury, according to the Riverside Press-Enterprise. He has qualified for the 100.

In the Division IV prelims, Adoree’ Jackson of Gardena Serra qualified first in the long jump at 23-7 1/4. He was second in the 200 in 21.92. Sophomore Malik Roberson of Serra was first in the 100 in 10.84.
