Southern Section finals: Cypress wins Division 2 championship [Video]

May 31, 2013 |  6:41 pm

Behind standout fielding that would have made the home tenants at Dodger Stadium envious, Cypress won the Southern Section Division 2 championship on Friday with a 5-0 victory over Temecula Valley.

Pitcher Kevin Lillicrop, who retired the first 13 batters of the game, benefited from a defense that has been considered one of the best in Southern California. Lillicrop produced 11 ground-ball outs. He struck out four and walked none.

"They're the best you can get," Lillicrop said of his infielders. "David Fletcher is the best shortstop I think I'll ever play with."

Shortstop Fletcher had a play in the sixth inning where he went deep into the hole to backhand a ball. It suddenly ended up in his hand and he threw a one-hopper to first baseman Nick Valdez, who made the grab for an out.

"The only thing that's a bummer today is it's the last day I get to see David Fletcher play," Coach John Weber said.

Stephen Lohr at third base, Fletcher at shortstop, Steven Andrade at second base, Valdez at first and Tyler Alamo at catcher were magnificent Friday and all season.

Cypress broke the game open with three runs in the sixth. Valdez got his second hit, an RBI double. Lohr got an RBI triple. Tyler Alamo delivered his second hit, an RBI single.
