Steve Smith, one of the greatest receivers and athletes in Woodland Hills Taft football history, announced his retirement from the NFL on Wednesday after six years. The former USC receiver has struggled with injuries in recent years.

Smith was a football-basketball standout during his prep days at Taft. Former Coach Troy Starr would rave about Smith’s talents. Even more important, he was a terrific role model with his work ethic, his focus on school and always listening to his coaches.

‘Best player I ever coached,’ Starr said.

His younger brother, Malcolm, plays for the Seattle Seahawks.
