Baseball: Three Western League teams win City playoff wild-card games

What a day it was for the Western League on Wednesday. Three schools won their City Section Division I wild-card playoff games.

Jordan Yrastorza pitched No. 19 University to a 3-2 upset of No. 14 Birmingham. He threw 6 1/3 innings, and Vincent Medina got the save. Marlowe Leal had two hits. No. 13 Hamilton defeated No. 20 Arleta, 3-1. Ethan Victor had the game-winning two-run double. And No. 15 Venice defeated No. 18 Carson, 8-7.

University will play at Chatsworth in a first-round game on May 22. Venice will play at Cleveland. Hamilton will play at Banning.

Verdugo Hills defeated Maywood, 5-0, and will face top-seeded San Fernando. Brandon Zavala struck out nine. Matt Zavala had two hits.
