Baseball: No. 1 Oaks Christian survives San Marino, 1-0

After three No. 1 seeds went down on Thursday for the first time since 1987, top-seeded Westlake Village Oaks Christian turned to Brandon Evans to pull out a 1-0 victory over San Marino in a Southern Section Division 4 playoff opener on Friday.

Evans scored the game’s only run by stealing home in the second inning. Spencer Vogelbach struck out four in three innings, then gave the ball to ace Phil Bickford, who allowed two hits and struck out five to complete the victory. Harrison Hoff had two hits.

Malibu defeated Bishop, 10-6. Frank Thomas had two hits and three RBIs.

Baldwin Park defeated Century, 8-2. Dominic Hilo hit a grand slam and Ben Fonseca struck out 11. Elias Orona hit a three-run home run in San Dimas’ 7-1 win over Torrance. Northview defeaed Ramona, 7-4. Gabe Rojo, Anthony Amaya and Kollby Oriti each had two hits.

Kaiser defeated Nogales, 3-0. Alhambra defeated Bishop Diego, 3-1. Marco Briones won his 10th game, striking out eight. He also had two hits. Carpinteria defeated St. Anthony, 14-3. Duncan Gordon had three hits and five RBIs.
