Huntington Beach Marina overcame some dire circumstances to pull out a 6-5 victory over Los Angeles Loyola on Tuesday in a Southern Section Division I semifinal at Blair Field.

Max Willingham delivered the key hit of the game, a two-strike, two-run single in the bottom of sixth inning to conclude a courageous comeback against standout pitcher Nathan Hadley after the Vikings had fallen behind, 5-1.

“It was kind of nerve wracking, but I tried to stay calm and hit the ball up the middle," Willingham said. “I just had to persevere and try to get the job done.

Hadley, a junior, struck out eight and walked none. Loyola had scored five runs in the second inning on six hits. Marina was able to stay in the game thanks to standout relief pitching from Steve Gingery, who threw five innings without allowing any runs.

Marina advances to Friday's 8 p.m. final at Dodger Stadium.
